Dead Sea Scrolls The Dead Sea Scrolls are a group of 800-900 manuscripts found in caves at Qumran east of Jerusalem and north-west of the Dead Sea. The first scrolls were discovered in 1947 by a shepherd-boy who wandered into a cave after a stray goat. The texts are believed to have been hidden in eleven caves for safe-keeping prior to the destruction of Rome in A.D.70. Cohen believes within this 350 year period which spans from the Maccabees to the Mishnah was a time that regulations were expanded and the only way to seek God was through the study of liturgy and prayer. Qumran is where most were found. I think the Dead Sea Scrolls are the oldest known copies of Bibilical works. The works were identified by the bibilical passages they contained. It is amazing to me that 2000 years passed and no one found these works.

Before the Dead Sea Scrolls discovery, the most ancient whole text was written in Hebrew. It was the Masoretic text from the 10th century. The oldest complete biblical text, on the other hand, was known as the Septuagint also. It was the Greek translation from the 4th century (One for Israel, 2018). The Dead Sea Scrolls revealed manuscripts of many books of the Old Testament that were more ancient than any manuscript ever known. The Pharisees, Sadducees and Essenes were three religious groups who lived in Palestine during the time of Jesus who was a first century Jew. The Pharisees and Sadducees were two well –known Jewish sects from the time of Jesus. Both opposed Jesus during his ministry. During the time when Jesus walked on Earth, the Jewish people were divided into many different religious sects. The four most well known sects were known as the Pharisees, the Sadducees, the Zealots, and the Essenes. The major differentiating factor among these sects was their views of what the Messiah foretold by the Prophets would be like. The Sadducees were the aristocrats of ancients Israel, and filled the positions of priests and lawmakers. They also held the majority of seats on the Sanhedrin
