One day in the year 1975, was a day that went down in Viking football history as the Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers competed in Super Bowl IX in New Orleans, Louisiana on January 12th, 1975. This game was composed of 16 future football hall of famers. This was a hard fought game for the vikings, but they fell short and lost 16-6. Two weeks later, the two teams met again, but this time off the turf and on the white sand beaches of Waikiki, Hawaii. The two teams competed in the ABC’s “Super Teams” competition where they battled through a 16 minute game of tug-of-war. Many of the players stated afterwards that this was the hardest physical activity they had ever competed in. The players also competed in many other activities for

Even though football players are aware of the dangers the game can bring upon them, they take part despite it. The passion, the joy it creates; for professionals it’s also the devoted fans and compensation they receive is what keeps the players motivated. Today players are much bigger, faster, smarter, bigger, better. The game is more physical. The sport has never been so competitive. The popularity has reached new peaks, as much that the NFL has thoughts of moving a team to London, England. Additionally, Super Bowl XLVII (47) was one of the most watched television events of all time; an astonishing 108.4 million viewers (The Associated Press). Fans worship their teams and love to see big hits. Football is a contact sport; injuries are no
Football remains the most popular sport in America and the ninth most popular sport in the world for a reason. Since its creation in 1869, football has played a fundamental part of American society. Every Sunday, my family along with millions of other Americans turn the television to CBS, NBC or FOX to watch their favorite football team go to battle. My family and I bleed burgundy and gold and root for the home team the Washington Redskins. Americans including myself display great intensity and passion for the game of football and the result of the game often changes my attitude for the better or worse. Watching the game on television may come as exhilarating and entertaining, but playing the game creates the best times. Overall football has made a severe impact on many people’s lives. Football teaches unique lessons in a hands on manner which helps athletes like myself sustain a much more adventurous life. Football has made an immeasurably positive influence upon my life, but the sport has its dangers. Football changes lives.
The 1980’s was a time of prosperity throughout America. From the Calendar that went from January 1st to December 31st to the increase of jobs. This decade was full of good changes socially, economically, and politically.

In Joshua Keating’s essay “If It Happened There: In Brutal Contest of Strength and Strategy, a Culture Is Revealed” published on Slate.com in January 2014, the author utilizes polarizing diction, juxtaposition, pedantic diction, and synecdoche to achieve the purpose of showing that the Super Bowl is a tradition that unifies American Society.
How did the events from the later 1960’s and through the 1970’s contribute to cynicism and mistrust toward the nation’s leaders, especially those in politics?
Imagine nowadays if Tom Brady led that year’s Super Bowl champions, New England Patriots, against the brightest athletes of tomorrow, such as Jamesis Winston, Melvin Gordon, and Amari Cooper in a game to determine the better squad. That dream used to a reality back in the early days of the emerging National Football League. This summer classic would pit the defending champions of the NFL the previous year and the best stars of college football and was held as the very first game to wet fan’s football appetite and serve as a highly respected charitable event. First started in 1934, it served as one of the first kinds of All-Star showdowns ever established. Chicago’s historic Solider Field served as the game’s annual venue until the game was

Pittsburgh beat Cleveland the following week in the home opener, yet continued to stumble by going on to loose their next three games. Suddenly Steeler opponents were giving back what they had been getting for two years. A team built on defense and intimidation was now being bullied by teams they had ground to dust just one year before. Pittsburg’s backslide was punctuated in week five during a rematch with the Browns. The lasting memory of Cleveland’s Joe “Turkey” Jones slamming Terry Bradshaw head first into the turf of Municipal Stadium epitomized the shocking debut of the 76 Steelers. A proud team had hit rock bottom. Pittsburgh’s record was now 1 and 4. With Bradshaw injured, the Steelers would have to limp along with an unknown rookie quarterback named Mike Kruczek. With the Division leading Cincinnati Bengals coming to town the following week, the prospect of a third straight Super Bowl was nonexistent.
The seventies is often seen as a lost decade, merged between the optimistic sixties and the opportunistic eighties. Bruce J. Schulman argues, in his book titled, “The Seventies: The Great Shift in American Culture”, that this period ignores changes brought by the 1970s. This period brought changes in the economy, shifts in culture, politics, race, family and religious values. The United States faced many transformations that helped shape our country to this day. Schulman begins to explain his thesis, “The Seventies transformed American economic and cultural life as much as, if not more than, the revolutions in manners and morals of the 1920s and the 1960s.” The information that I will present will summarize the changes that affected the United
Since the introduction of organized team sports into American culture, numerous sports have stepped into the limelight for certain periods of time but none have stuck around as long as football has. Just as with everything else in life, football has had it’s fair share of drawbacks since its invention in the mid-19th century. Despite the drawbacks and criticism football has faced, its role and influence on American culture between the 1890’s and 1930’s far outweigh the negative aspects of its past.
The 1970s can be best understood as a transitional period in America. Starting in the 1950s, the power of the youth was on the rise, through civil rights activism and anti-war protests. This decade’s ideal citizen seemed to be the person helping others. Then the 1980s are more financially centered and individualistic. This decade’s ideal citizen is the one who measured success by how much money they made. The 1970s proved to be a time of bitterness, cynicism, and increased interest in one’s self for most of the people in America. Some of the events that contributed to this were the Kent State Massacre, Roe v. Wade, and the economic stagflation that happened in the latter part of the decade.
Spielberg usage of documentary footage for One Day in September in the opening moments provides us with archive footage from the news reporters; reporting the kidnapping of eleven Israeli men being held hostage by Palestinian terrorists. The News shows footage of the first rescue on live television, being called off. Then shows the hostage and terrorists being transport to the airport by bus. The explosion at the airport, the news coverage reporting that all the hostages are fine and the terrorist are all dead. There is another news coverage-reporting saying that “Our worst fear is realized tonight; reporting of the eleven hostages, two were killed in their room’s yesterday morning, and nine were killed at the airport tonight. They are all
