I believe that bias is bad, this has been prevalent throughout my life. Where after the 9/11 which the anniversary will be in 3 day from now, many american muslims were under scrutiny from many americans who were victims of 9/11. In so many of the world’s tragedies, there was bias and scrutiny; things like, The holocaust, The Crusades, Rwanda, The Red Scare. All of them were fuelled by a social bias. I have seen people on social media argue about things that don't even affect the people talking about them. Nearly every war in history has stemmed from a bias in some way or another. In some sort of perfect world, this would not happen, people would be able to express their ideas and standings freely without being hated for what they think.
What is a bias and why is it such a relevant topic. A bias is an ignorance of a fact, perspective, topic, or cause that’s usually followed by arrogance or closed-mindedness. Throughout history, especially America’s history, women and people of the black race have been mistreated or misunderstood in some way due to biases. In fact, we know this from “An Address by Elizabeth Cady Stanton” and “The Souls of Black Folk: Of Our Spiritual Strivings”.
It has recently come to my attention that not enough people understand how great bias in media has been to our lives. Each day we wake up and see near one or more biases in the media, lying at the foot of our beds. It is wonderful to be able to wake up and smile each morning because of this. Decisions are made based on what people hold to be true. History has shown instances where severly biased media. The most recognizable evidence being WWII and Stalin. "Because of the status quo bias, the media ignore any position that advocates radical change"
Stereotypes are a leading cause in the discrimination and prejudice against people with different religions. People assume what other religions believe, and they do not take the time to actually understand the other religion they are putting down. In the article Muslims Face More Bias In United States Compared To Other Religions it talks about how Americans are more likely to have prejudice against Muslims than they are about other religions. However, nearly two-thirds of American do not know anything about Islam. It mentions that because of
One of the most known and worst events occurred on September 11, 2001. Terror attacks occurred in the United States of America in the cities of Washington D.C. and New York City. An Al-Qaeda terrorist group organized this attack by sending terrorists on four different airplanes to crash into the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center, while another one was targeted for the Pentagon. Although one plane hit the Pentagon, the other went off course and crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. The plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania was supposed to either hit the White House or the Capital building. Over 3,000 people died and this day in
Director, Rory O’Conner, in his documentary film 9/11: A Press for the Truth, portrays many facts from the 9/11 terrorist attack. The author has a clear purpose, to expose information about the attack, and defy what majorities of people think, he reveals the undiscovered aspects of the attack; which may have been purposely withheld from the public. He also gives credit and bases his documentary in some unfortunate group of woman called “The Jersey Girls”. He, O’Conner, adopts different tones from different personas, from harsh and severe, to soft, sad and unfortunate tones to appeal to all kinds of audience. The author opens the documentary by impacting images to the audience about the terrorist attack.
four airlines and carried out suicide attacks against the United States buildings. 2,996 people were killed and more than 6,000 other were injured. 9/11 was the biggest influence on the United States. The attacks on 9/11 toward the buildings, there has been changes in airports and the immigration system. There has been domestic spying on the citizens of United States, people were changing their trust in the government, and the ongoing wars.
The manipulation of the government and media after the 9/11 event is similar to the propaganda used during world war one to increase public involvement in the war effort. World War I engaged with propaganda on a global scale. The government systematically targeted the general public with propaganda (Welch 2013). Different from previous wars, World war I was the first total war in which whole nations and not just professional armies were involved in mortal combat (Welch 2013). As a result, the government placed significant amount of dependency on propaganda to justify the war to the people, to help encourage recruitment into the armed forces and to convince the population that their sacrifice would be rewarded (Welch 2013). For instance, the
Bias is defined as “prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair”. Each and everyone of us have a bias perspective towards one thing or another whether we are brave enough to admit or not. A person becomes bias through personal experiences or things they have read or heard. My brother and I used to play mario kart together and he would refuse to play unless he had the character “Wario” because he thought Wario was the only good character. This was an example of him being biased against the other characters in the game.
Many groups are being persecuted for many reasons. The are being criticized for their ethnicity, culture, and for what the believe in. Muslims have been persecuted for many years now. Since 9/11, people think that their kind are terrorists and that they’re bad people. Here is who they are and why people have been criticizing them for many years.
In my last essay I talked about my mom's experience of 9/11 through her eyes, although my dad and her were together at the time my dad had a whole other story to tell. And here it is. At the time my dad was the director of psychology at a Pediatric Rehabilitation unit at NYU medical center and he was also in charge of supports at the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). As my dad was at my brothers first day of preschool his beeper (his phone back then) was blowing up. Then as he took my brother out to the pediatrician my mom and dad saw what was happening and he called the hospital. He jumped in the car and sped down to work. As he was driving on 5th avenue in devastation he watched the second tower collapse. When he finally got to the hospital
The incident I am going to be talking about in this paper is the 9/11 incident and the communication challenges law enforcement agencies dealt with. We all know what happen on September 11, when a terrorist group al-Qaeda hijacked planes and crashed them into the world trade center. When the buildings were collapsing helicopters was flying around and giving warnings to the police and fire department on one of the building they were in was about to collapse. Most of the police officers in the North Tower heard those warnings and were able to evacuate (Sasso, 2015). But that information never reached firefighters, for a simple reason: Radio systems for the Fire Department, the Police Department, and the Port Authority Police were all incompatible with each other (Sasso, 2015). The reason why firefighters and the police department could hear or talk to each other was the technical problems with the radios did not go a long range. “As soon as they went five or ten floors up in the buildings, they couldn’t talk to each other,” recalls Chuck Dowd, who was the head of New York’s 911call center (Sasso, 2015). The communication was so bad that one of the firefighters had to call 911 instead of using his radio to call them to help another firefighter that was hurt due to know one can hear on the radio.
The attacks that transpired in the morning of September 11, 2001, affected everyone in the United States due to the fact that this was the most devastating attack on U.S. soil even to this day. Although this was not a personal attack to everybody, losing nearly three thousand lives in one day is detrimental to any nation, and especially to a city that would have nine months of clean-up to restore New York City to its “original” state. The aftermath of 9/11 was full of patriotism and propaganda that was broadcasted to the American public by the mass media. In accordance with the government, the media set out on a “War against Terror” campaign that would engulf the nation in a series of wars aimed at defeating global terrorism. Since the
“It’s good bonding time with Tamaki. You know, that thing I was sent here by my grandmother to do? You act like I chose this. What do you want me to do?” I fumed. I certainly hadn’t wanted to start my morning arguing over the phone with Eric, and I was not feeling refreshed by the experience.
September 11, 2001, millions of New Yorkers and American citizens woke up and started their day, unprepared and unaware for the catastrophic attack that would be taking place in just a few short hours. At 8:46 a.m., Eastern Standard Time, Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower. The impact killed all of the passengers and crew as well as hundreds inside the building. At 9:03 a.m., a second plane, Flight 175, crashed into the corner of the South Tower killing passenger, crew, and workers who worked on floors seventy-five to eighty-three. Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:37 a.m. killing approximately 185 individuals (History.com Staff). Because of the damaged to the support system, fires, and impact at extremely fast speed, the South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. (Lipton and Glanz). Having heard about the acts of terrorism that had just taken place in New York and Washington, D.C., a group of passengers drove their plane, Flight 93, into a Pennsylvania field killing everyone on board but possibly saving hundreds of other lives in the process. The North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. 102 minutes after being struck (History.com Staff). On September 11, 2001, almost twelve hundred people were wounded or killed by “coordinated suicide attempts” by Al Qaeda terrorists. In result to the four airplanes being hijacked and used for premediated reasons, the United States government instituted new regulations for entering the country and airport security as well as expounded on systems already in place.
Media Bias has been a prevalent problem throughout history. For example in 1989 an article titled “Destruction of Warship Maine was the work of the enemy ”. Many would think this is a normal informative article however this article conveyed the idea that the destruction of the Warship was the work of the axis powers. This had been proven to be a simple accident. This is an example of pro-war bias. You can tell this because it is using the Pathos persuasive technique to make the people think that the destruction of the warship Maine was an attack to America and a threat to them personally, thus encouraging them to support the
