Abstract
Throughout the history of law enforcement, leaders have used many different styles to lead employees. From the early styles of Autocratic and Laissez-Faire to Participative
(democratic), Transactional and Transformational leadership. Leadership within policing has evolved over the years in some organizations to a more participative style and yet there are still leaders who cling to an antiquated domineering style.

Leadership Traits and Characteristics
An important characteristic of leadership is using human talents to grow performance, trust and integrity in employees and the organization (Daft, 2005). One’s personality plays a major role in the way they lead. Personality is a combination of traits (distinguishing personal characteristics) that classifies an individual’s behavior. Personality affects conduct as well as insight and attitudes. Knowing personalities helps explain and forecast others’ behavior and job performance (Lussier & Achua, 2004). The Big Five Model of Personality assesses whether a person is stronger in surgency, agreeableness, adjustment, conscientiousness, or openness to experience. Surgency includes leadership and extraversion traits (Lussier & Achua, 2004). The need for power compares to the Big Five dimension of surgency. People with a high need for power are depicted as wanting to control situations and enjoy competition in which they can win because they do not like to lose.

They lean toward being ambitious and have a lower need for affiliation. They are more concerned with influencing other people than they are with what other people think about them
(Lussier & Achua,).
Extraversion is the extent that a person is outgoing, sociable, talkative, and relaxed in meeting and talking with new people. A person with high marks in surgency wants to be in charge and have influence over others (Daft, 2005).
Introversion are traits where a person is more mindful of their own thoughts and feelings rather than their surrounding environment. Have you ever met someone that seemed to be more reserved than others? Someone who tends to keep their emotions private? Someone who is more of a social
The New Zealand Police is the lead agency responsible for helping the community to decrease or reduce crime, corruption and improve the responsibility of safety and protection in New Zealand. There is a need to make changes to the police culture in order to improve the performance of their organisation. However there are three fundamental errors that need to be addressed which will be discussed in this essay. Firstly, there is a lack of an established sense of urgency which has the potential to jeopardize the future of the organization. Secondly is, not creating a powerful enough guiding coalition which means there is a lack of communication which resulted in an absence of leadership and teamwork from frontline staff to
My personal experiences with police leadership started back in 1995 to 1998 where I started as police explorer cadet for the Rose Hill Police Department. The department leadership at the time was made up of one chief, one master patrolman, and one reserve supervisor.
Extraversion can be described as a love for being around others, being social, and outgoing. This is often a positive trait however; it also is difficult for an extrovert to work well alone. Being an extrovert is a weakness at times because I find that I have a harder time being motivated and staying on track when I work in a solitary environment. I see this often in the office, during the traditional work week of Monday-Friday I am very productive. On these days I will interact with hundreds of people. If I work from home or work on the
Extraversion- Extraversion is marked by pronounced engagement with the external world. McCrae & Costa (1997) believe there is a good deal of variation in what makes up this factor. Extraverts enjoy being with people, are full of energy, and often experience positive emotions. Extraverted employees tend to be enthusiastic and action-oriented (Carver & Scheier, 2000), like
3) Extraversion: People in this category are known to be outgoing, sociable, friendly and gregarious. Extraversion has been extensively researched for years as positive emotionality in some trait models (Watson & Clark, 1997).
Are the people placed in these roles fit as being a leader? Are they capable of leading in a large quality in the future? There has been research on the varied of different leadership styles with in law enforcement agencies. Other views on the research focus on leadership and how it effects organizational commitment. There is a need to push out research and create different models in order to redesign of law enforcement agencies. According to Patrick J. Hughes “Increasing Organizational Leadership Through the Police Promotional Process”, he explains the current process used in promoting ranks and the available leadership education for law enforcement agents. There are clear connections between leadership styles and how to proper assess a true
Another behavior I have observed is that most of the members do not think ahead and plan their activities. This behavior when analyzed further points to fact that the members are expected never to challenge their superiors. This results in relatively frequent priority changes. Even though they know the business and the functionalities around the business they tend not to look at alternative solutions before working with the business.
. Leadership Concepts in Policing The intent of this paper is to discuss the application of leadership concepts as they apply to rural and urban policing and why the possession of certain abilities is imperative for good leadership. The leadership concepts to be discussed are decision making, leadership qualities, communications, empowerment, well-being, teamwork, and time management. There is no one quality that is greater than the other and this paper will show that collectively the entire aforementioned qualities enable a good leader to become better.
The team leader has the power to establish the norms within the group by instilling harmony and collaboration to enhance the team’s benefits. By moving the group to a higher emotional tone, a leader accomplishes pulling out the best attributes from each team member by using optimistic interpretations, resonance building norms, and primal leadership styles. Leaders model behavior through their own actions and communication thus positively reinforcing team members to build the groups emotional capacity. Celebrating a century of achievements, the Michigan State Police (MSP) has proven to be a world-class leader in law enforcement. Honoring traditions, celebrating achievements, and defining MSP’s purpose cultivates a culture of understanding
Introduction There is a lot that goes into making up a police department here in the United States of America. Many experts have come up with different theories and factors that they believe can help run a police department in the most efficient manner. They develop these theories and focus them on certain aspects that they believe if more attention was devoted to would in the end result in a more efficient organization or company. Theories are not unanimously used by all police departments meaning that every police department in the United States uses different theories or ways to go about their business.
If America is to continue on as a civil country, where people are free to feel safe in their everyday lives, then there is a desperate need for reform in the current police culture. There is a certain culture of silence prevalent among law enforcement officers. It is usually known as the Blue Wall of Silence, or the Blue Code. It is an unwritten rule among officers, to not report on each other’s mistakes, misconducts, or crimes. It is not a far cry from the same code of honor followed by Italian-American Mafioso, who follow a code of silence, wherein being an informant was considered the blackest mark against ones manhood. It has allowed many crooked
The Extraverted criterion in the ESTJ personality type indicates an individual’s social activities and the expression of the self in the external world. With my 1% score in Extraversion, I do not have a significant preference for Extraversion over Introversion. The implication of the marginal score is that I am more likely to regulate my attitude on social activities and seriousness based on the environment. This test reminds me of my 20-somethings. I used
