I chose the topic clothing from the book “The Accidental Tourist” where the writer tells us about the clothing of the protagonist and his wife. The protagonist of the story wears a Summer suit which he prefers for traveling and his wife wore a summer dress. India is a very traditional and culture rich country, and it lies in the Asian continent. It is the seventh largest country by area and is the largest country in South Asia. According to the census of India, “The population of India is around 1.3 billion making it the second most populated country in the world. There are around 4,200 religions in India with 9 major religions like Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism and jainisim”(Religion). India has a variety of clothing with a major influence of religion. Clothing is considered as one of the most important aspect for displaying the traditional and cultural values in India which is not the same in USA as they have no traditional clothing. India has a variety of clothing. Where people dress according to their cultural traditions, religion and climatic conditions. Each state of India has different type of clothing which is not true in the case of America. There are around 30 different types of clothing in India with different clothing for each state. According to Lisaa School of Design, “The different types of clothing are:- sari, Mundur neriyatham, mekhela sador, salwar kameez, churidar, anarkali suit, Lehanga choli, dhoti, lungi, Sherwani, bandhgala, pagri(turban) etc”(Traditional Dresses and Fashion Culture across different Indian States). Whereas, in America there is no traditional clothing but a variety of regional clothing influenced majorly by the climatic conditions. The clothing in the United States is has evolved from the British. Americans wear Casuals like t-shirt, jeans and casual shirts for going to non formal places and wear formal clothes like shirts, pants and suits for formal places. The suits that men wore were different in the old times where they were only knee level pants and long socks. According to Levi Strauss, “Denim jeans were invented in USA by Levi Strauss in 1871 which is a very renowned brand now”(The history of denim). The reason for the discovery of jeans was
Unfortunately I see this conversation ending with Celeste and Jim both very upset and no solutions to the conflict being discussed. It seems that at the end of this scenario the conflict was beginning to spiral out of control, and communication was shutting down. It will end with Celeste and Jim blowing up at each other and not being willing to understand the others perspective about the situation. They will not talk for a while after this happens and Jim will hire Nikki as he intended to from the beginning. As a negative end to this conflict I see Jim and Celeste looking back over the conflict still trying to defend their position (retrospective goals).
Daily, hundreds of thousands of people are traveling, whether it’s by plane, car, bus, boat, or foot, people are traveling to new locations and being immersed in different cultures. Many fail to realize how ignorant of a tourist they are. Kincaid explains that tourists are morally “ugly” and use other, less fortunate people, for their own amusement. She tries to enlighten those who are privileged to be more considerate when they are visiting new places. Published author Jamaica Kincaid wrote “The Ugly Tourist,” originally written in her book, A Small Place, where she tries to convince readers that tourists are, “a piece of rubbish” (207). Kincaid’s attempt to convey to the audience that tourists are ignorant and morally “ugly” is partially successful, due to her satisfactory emotional appeal, yet inability to produce a less angry tone, along with minimal logical appeal.
A lot of countries made their clothing for different reasons. For instance, Scotland made a fabric called tartans that showed what clan they are in, and Hawaiians production of clothing was part of religious significance. In the Middle Ages ties and belts were used more frequently because their clothes was oversized by modern standards. “With the Renaissance’s changes in art and society came more fitted clothes” (Source 2). They made their clothes more fitted by sewing multiple pieces of cloth instead of using just one big piece of cloth. Without closures like zippers it made it very difficult to get into their clothes. The wealthier people had their tailor customize their own patterns. “... height of 18th century, French fashion garments were truly works of art” (Source 2). The french started to ship in foreign pieces of clothes shipped from miles away and used silk-like materials. “... flashy fabrics fell out of use.. fit became increasingly more important in the 19th and 20th centuries” (Source 2). The flashy material went out of style and nobody really wanted to use it anymore. Instead of tunics and robes, men started to wear suits. Men and women were looking for a more fitted look
Clothing styles have changed drastically over the many years of civilization. From hand made, hand sewn, pieces of fabric, to mas produced, factory made, clothing, through technology clothing has changed. The evolution of clothing is due to technological advances in the making of mass produced clothing. Throughout history clothing has had a big impact of social status.
American tourism to Hawaii has increased by 14.2 percent in just two years. This dramatic increase in tourism seems to be a beneficial boost for Hawaii's economy; however, the increasing rate of tourism is harming the native people of Hawaii. While the Hawaiian economy is experiencing one of its most fruitful years, the native Hawaiian people are suffering from job loss, poverty, depression, and an overall "cultural destruction" (Trask 260). Haunani-Kay Trask uses rhetoric to discuss these harmful effects in her essay "Tourist, Stay Home" in order to persuade her readers into believing that tourism can actually be a bad thing for an economy. On the other hand, in his article "Surf's Up for the Economy in Hawaii," Jim
I had the good fortune of being able to visit Da Yooper’s Tourist Trap for the first time this fall. I always wanted to go visit but have never found the time or was never able to go. Da Yooper’s Tourist trap is the home base of the band Da Yooper’s which has been going strong since 1975. Da Yooper’s band is perhaps the most famous musical group from Upper Peninsula. According to their website they “Originally started in 1975 by Jim "Hoolie" DeCaire and Joe Potila as a working dance band, Da Yoopers have been putting a smile on faces all over the world now for over 30 years with their off-beat musical comedy act.” When I was at the Tourist trap I caught a glimpse of their old tour truck with their logo on the side.
Jamaica Kincaid is able to distinct herself from most essays in “The Ugly Tourist” by using a paradoxically haphazard sentence structure, repetition of certain words, and the use of second person. When first reading this essay sentences seem unbalanced and unstructured; for example, many sentences begin with conjunctions and one sentence almost covers a whole page. Kincaid decides to use such a unique, almost haphazard sentence structure to separate herself and her writing style from other writers. The reason paradoxically haphazard could be used to describe her sentence structure is because at first it appears to be a mess, but one can also see how she adeptly and frequently uses literary devices, such as parallel sentence structure, to
The short store “Clothes” by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is about a young Indian woman, Sumita, and her cultural transition to America that is symbolized by her clothes and the color of her clothes. The traditional Indian attire for a woman is a sari and each one has its own purpose. Her clothes also indicate her progression from daughter, to wife, to woman.
Clothing is always constantly evolving. Each year there is always new styles, new patterns, and new ways to wear a piece. Changes in clothing is an advance in society and is a way to express one’s views. Types of clothing in the Romantic Era caused many conservatories and even some health issues. In this paper, we are going to go back to the start of Romantic Era and will learn how clothing evolved throughout the years.
Compared to other novels that deal with love affairs and romances, The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler is different because it takes the reader on a trip through the character’s minds. Macon Leary’s wife separates herself from him. Their problems begin with the death of their son, Ethan Leary. That is not to say that they agree on raising him, because they didn’t. “When Ethan was born, he only brought out more of their differences” (16). They choose to raise Ethan differently. Sarah wants to let him be happy and free, while Macon wants him to be more scheduled and structured. The already struggling relationship is now even more troubled. Macon is not an
Central Idea: India is a fascinating country with diverse traditions related to their language, their costumes, and their cuisine.
The only sound that filled my ears was my keyboard clicking as my fingers raced across it. I had been procrastinating from finishing this assignment all evening, but I knew I needed to get it done. The burning sunset was shining through the windows as I was finishing up. It was a peaceful silence, until I heard the soft whispers of my parents that ignited my sense of curiosity. I was concentrating hard; doing my best trying to make out the hushed words that were being spoken.
I am writing a report explaining the importance of UK visitor attractions to tourism. In my report I will be including statistics and data to support my explanation.
Main point: India has many different cultures and every culture has different types of clothing they wear.
