In Module five I have built upon what I have learned in module three. I learned the three elements of adaptability, cognitive, emotional and dispositional flexibility, and the importance of balancing the three aspects to improve my adaptability. In finding that balance I believe I can become a more flexible leader and follower. My first course of action is to reflect upon how I can improve my cognitive flexibility. Cognitive flexibility is the ability to use different thinking strategies and mental frameworks. I have a problem with being short sighted and not taking into account many outcomes that can arise. By applying the different aspects of cognitive flexibility, scanning the environment, developing an understanding and creating strategies,
Adaptions can be made to questions to ensure inclusive learning. If a student is anxious in a group situation, questions can be asked on a 1:1 basis. Equally the questions can be adapted according to the level of the student, either low or stretch for higher level students.
By doing Module 1 of this course I had opportunity to think about my career as a teacher. In order for me to improve learners’ learning I have to create for them appropriate environment using different teaching strategies in which every learner feels respected and safe. Learners need to know that learning has a purpose and what they are learning it is relevant to their lives. Also it is important to provide them with feedback regarding their progress on what they are trying to achieve, how far they are from the goal that was set. And how to achieve all I have to keep on trying new things and improving teaching skills. The actual teaching, classes I attended for this course gave me opportunity to better myself as a teacher. I learned about teaching principals from our teaching classes, later applied my knowledge in my actual teaching practice and also learned about teaching ideas through the web. From all these I understood that my development as a teacher should never end because teaching is a part of a life-long
The term ‘stress’ was generally thought to have been a concept created by Robert Hooke in the 17th century. He worked on the design of physical structures, such as bridges; his concept of stress came from how much pressure a structure could withstand. However, Lazarus (1993) pointed out that the term ‘stress’ has been used as far back as the 14th century, when it meant hardship or adversity. Back then it referred to the external stressor, such as the death of a spouse or financial worry; in the 20th century, there are many different schools of thought on this area. Hans Selye (1956), brought together the work of Cannon and Bernard and devised a comprehensive system of physiological stress; which he termed the ‘General Adaptation Syndrome’,
Did anything surprise you as you rated your school on the elements you learned about in the module? Please explain.
In order to master critical thinking, the ability to question information and solve problems must be present. The crucial steps that lead to successful decision-making is not based solely on our skills and abilities, but on the strategies that help us get there. All these steps combined allow us to make solid and intelligent decisions. Research on understanding how the mind works is a continuing project at best, but the progress we have made is substantial in the areas of understanding problem-solving and decision-making.
In order for me to become more flexible, I will purposely pay more attention to my surroundings, so I will be more aware of what is going on around me. I will no longer zone people out and act as if they do not exist. For example, if I am at work setting up the dock for incoming trailers and a team member approaches me and needs assistance with freight from another trailer, I will stop what I am doing and walk over to the trailer that they are working on and advise them appropriately on how to handle their situation. I do not want my little bit of selfishness to stand in the way of the operational process of my
During the past 20 years, it has been noted that personal behaviors which includes, tobacco use, alcohol abuse, unhealthy diet and obesity contributes to the death of millions. According Orleans, Ulmer and Gruman, “research findings over the past two decades have established that modifying these behavioral risk factors leads to improved health and quality of life and to reduce health costs and burden” (as cited in Knickman, Jonas & Kovner, 2015, p. 120). Many of us can relate to these personal behaviors that have caused health issues. Smokers pay more for insurance becomes of the dire consequences associated with cigarettes. Alcohol abuse can cause liver damage as well as other health issues. Unhealthy diet and obesity can go hand in hand and can lead to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
This course has provided me with a multitude of tools, and it has definitely taught me to put careful thought into every situation as it pertains to change; whether it relates to work, school, or things that are going on in my personal life. These tools are both important and necessary in order to become an effective manager in the future.
My goal for module 5 is reduce the stress I experience in daily life by trying to develop a more optimistic attitude towards the obstacles I face in my daily life. Achieving my short term goal will help me view the obstacles I encounter trying to reach goals I set as challenges to overcome rather than problems, I feel that I would be more likely to stick to my goals if I view them with a more positive outlook. This is also applies to my long-term goal of improving my cardiovascular, because learning to view obstacles as challenges and opportunities to better myself will help me keep a positive attitude and not be discouraged by barriers and shortcomings I encounter in pursuit of my goals.
The above was two of my strengths and two of my weaknesses: Interpersonal Awareness, Empathy. Time Management, Decision
Staying mentally active is exercise for your brain and will most certainly keep cognitive conditions far away. ‘Use it or lose it’ – that’s where the saying comes from. Learning new things or undertaking activities that require multi-tasking help keep your mind active: memorization, learning a new route, strategy games and puzzles, or acquire a new skill or even a hobby
Imagine seeing an abusive video, it creates a lot of emotion in people. It brings out another side of them either emotionally or physically making them want to do something about the situation. Now when people start a new job they usually go through some type of training getting them ready for the work. That’s what this experiment is about, but it’s not just your average type of training. In the Article “Increasing Cognitive Readiness Through Computer and Videogame–Based Training” by Jorge Peña and Nicholas Brody, a study was made to see if exposure to emotional or tacticle miltatry videos had an effect on two compents of congnative readiness, emotional regulation and metacognition. Also examining how social identification factors such as
Having a “Brain Healthy Lifestyle” (Bend, 2014) is made up of several different categories that include “physical health, brain fitness, and vitality” (Bend, 2014) as well as “balanced nutrition, stress management, and mental stimulation” (Sharpbrains, 2014). Our physical health plays a major part in brain function. Exercising our bodies, eating well, and getting the proper amount of sleep has a huge impact on our physical health. “Our brain requires 25% of the blood that is pumped by your heart. The healthier your heart is, the healthier your brain will be” (Bend, 2014). Cognitive fitness is demonstrated by uses of vocabulary, thinking, perception, and attention. It is crucial to make it a normal everyday practice to challenge our brains through new activities. Taking part in a cooking class or learning to
5. Have goals. Your brain is tremendously good at finding solutions. You can help it out by doing a good job of outlining and prioritizing your objectives. The simplest way to do this is to write down your goal and include a deadline. Now your brain knows what to work on and when to have it accomplished. You can do this for your own matters or for finding solutions for your
