Benefits of the internet and social media In today’s generation teenagers use the internet and social media so often that it has become a normal part of their lives along with a necessity. But why does the majority of people think negatively about this? Maybe because many media outlets tend to make the focal points on the negatives that they bring but don’t see the substantial remarkable benefits they have. But what exactly defines the internet and social media? They are viewed as global computer networks that contain sources of useful information and as a tool and aid for a variety of options. Both the internet and social media ease all fields such as communication. Social media and the internet gives teenagers a chance to empower themselves in many ways because they provide an extensity of benefits and opportunities. For example, teenagers get a boost of confidence. Social media and the internet allows people to share photos whenever and with whoever they want. Most of the teenagers today are obsessed with taking selfies. Some of them even take selfies on a day to day basis. They post pictures that they feel beautiful in. As Sherrie Campus a clinical psychologist who has the skills acquired in treating conditions such as depression, anxiety, and learning disabilities stated that” Selfies are narcissism at its finest, teens are naturally narcissistic, and when healthy, this narcissism is part of their development” (Campbell paragraph 10). Selfies make teens feel good about themselves by helping them learn to find things they possess that they like. Other people's comments and photo likes help to improve self-esteem and rebuild confidence. Some comments can include things such as “you're beautiful” and so on.
Social media also emphasizes on creating and maintaining strong relationships. Staying in touch with current and old-time friends is especially relevant to teens. Many sites like Facebook and snapchat are used to share exciting news and see what's going on with the lives of their family and friends. In the article “The upside of selfies: social media isn’t all bad for kids” Kelly Wallace who writes in-depth articles and socially sourced stories for CNN a cable news network stated that “when
With social media growing and growing into a mass of accounts and profiles and different groups of people and clubs and websites and other things, what adolescents do on social media is something that many parents worry about. Not every parent is at ease with the fact that their child/teenager is out in open water; one young human being surrounded by millions of other human beings who are younger, the same age, or older than them. The article “Teenage social media butterflies may not be such a bad idea” takes a look at teenagers ' use of social media. Social media is a very important tool, allowing people to connect or continue their relationships without
Social media is nothing, but a distracting, timewasting, nuisance to everyone surrounded by it, right? Wrong. Social media has changed the world as we know it. People can share information quickly, publish their thoughts, and exchange their ideas. Social media is becoming a certainty in this modern age, which is why it should be embraced rather than criticized. Although there is concern over potential for cyberbullying and lack of privacy, the use of social media is inevitable in teenagers’ lives, and necessary to the positive development of adolescents because it allows adolescents to gain confidence when interacting with others, it encourages users to create and maintain friendships, and it can facilitate learning while promoting educational growth.
The article, “What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow up in Cyberspace,” written by Brent Staples discusses negative influences that internet has toward teens. The author elaborates that teens are far more comfortable with online conversations. Social Media has high expectations to how a teen should act or look. Media emotionally scars teens, demanding them to have clear skin and skinny body. The more people that are connected to their phones, higher the chance of losing relationships. The internet has left many teens with unreal social skills. Real life experiences such as law, teens are not knowledgeable. Teenagers miss out on life experiences that can help them grow into adulthood.
Older generations don’t realize how much technology has affected this generation of teenagers, along with the social media that comes along with the technology. As stated in “How Social Media Changed Teens’ Lives Forever”; “Negative posts or comments also can do great damage to a teen’s self-esteem.” (Ashley Black, Thomas Atseff and Colleen Kaveney) While many parents think social media is just a way to connect with others, many teenagers take it for granted. For example, “quitting social media because it made her miserable and obsessed with appearing perfect online”, is what a teenager felt about social media and what it has done to her. Though many think that social media is a great way to connect, teenagers take it to another level.
Society is very familiar with all the rising social media platforms that teenagers are using like Snapchat, Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook. Those are some of the most popular apps that teens are using. But how have all those social media platforms shaped my generation? Social media has been labeled as a positive tool but overall adults have seen it as a harm to teens. Many parents have agreed against their children using those social media platforms because of the many incidents that have surfaced involving kids and teenagers. The most common dangers that parents think about have been that kid’s have been bullied and have received death threats or even self-harmed. The social media platforms that are a popular among teens are being used as a way to express themselves, proving others who is strong, and to be social and covered with friends but those decisions have brought them negative consequences in one way or another.
Melissa Healy, a reporter of the Los Angeles Times, in the article Teenage Social Media Butterflies May Not Be Such A Bad Idea, claims that kids who spend lots of time on social media are not the least well-adjusted, but psychologically healthiest. Healy supports her argument by demonstrating how social media is beneficial to a teen’s health. According to a three-year Digital Youth Project, when teengars use social media, it helps them develop important social skills such as communication, grappling with social norms, and developing technical skills. Psychology professor Kaveri Subrahmanyam describes that teens behave the same between offline relationships and online ones, so most teens will use the internet safely. The author’s purpose is
Social media has been known to help students develop important knowledge and social skills. “At first glance this may seem like a waste of time; however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content.” (Chen 3). The more time teens spend on social media the more they become aware of their own social side and how to interact with others, especially their peers. “Some types of social media has beneficial effects, like helping adolescents establish some sense of identity and build networking skills” (Riley Davis). Too much time being spent on social media can also exploit teens to some harsh realities that they’ve probably never experienced in their lives before.

They will then, go out, find friends and try to connect with others to improve their overall relationship status with others. According to Kelly Wallace, ““On the whole, teens said they feel that social media has a more positive than negative impact on their social and emotional lives, they believe that social media helps their friendships, makes them feel more outgoing and gives them confidence” said Shira Lee Katz, Common Sense Media’s director of digital media” (Wallace,1). The director of Common Sense Media pulled information from her surveys and data and concluded that teens generally feel as if social media improves the relationships they have with other friends.
