Social media really started to form in 1993 when American Online (AOL) was invented. AOL was an online chat room that gave people the ability to talk to their friends in two-way or group conversations (Burns, 2017, p. 9). Some examples of social media are Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Twitter, Kik, WhatsApp, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Messenger, Google (Burns, 2017).
United Airlines is just one of many companies that uses social media for their advertising. United has Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and a LinkedIn account. Having several social media accounts is very smart because you want everyone to see your post and not everyone has every social media app. One of the ways United has recently used their social media is to promote help for the hurricane victims. The company is taking supplies down to Puerto Rico in hopes of helping them get back on their feet (United Airlines, 2017). They posted this on Facebook to let people know that they can donate to them and help the people in Puerto Rico. Also, it makes United Airlines look good because they are helping people in need.
