Social media really started to form in 1993 when American Online (AOL) was invented. AOL was an online chat room that gave people the ability to talk to their friends in two-way or group conversations (Burns, 2017, p. 9). Some examples of social media are Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat, Twitter, Kik, WhatsApp, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Messenger, Google (Burns, 2017).
United Airlines is just one of many companies that uses social media for their advertising. United has Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and a LinkedIn account. It is difficult to put an exact time on when social media was created, but it has been around in some form since 1991. 1991 is when the world-wide web was created to provide an enhanced network communication platform. The development of higher speed internet services, and what is referred to as web 2.0, opened the door for many more possibilities and features for social media. The creation of Myspace in 2003, and Facebook in 2004 shifted social media from a basic platform to connect, to an interactive two-way platform, allowing constant interactions.(Dijck, 2013) This was the beginning of growth for social media.
