Survey Survey is a research method involving the use of standardized questionnaires or interviews to collect data about people and their preferences, thoughts, and behaviors in a systematic manner. This method has since become a very popular method for quantitative research in the social sciences. The survey method can be used for descriptive, exploratory, or explanatory research. This method is best suited for studies that have individual people as the unit of analysis. Although other units of analysis, such as groups, organization are also studied using surveys, such studies often use a specific person from each unit as a “key informant” or a “proxy” for that unit, and such surveys may be subject to respondent bias if the informant chosen does not have adequate knowledge or has a biased opinion about the phenomenon of interest. Survey research has several inherent strengths compared to other research methods. 1. Surveys are an excellent vehicle for measuring a wide variety of unobservable data, such as people’s preferences, traits, attitudes, beliefs, behaviors or factual information. 2. Survey research is also ideally suited for remotely collecting data about a population that is too large to observe directly. A large area, …show more content…
The unique strength of experimental research is its causality due to its ability to link cause and effect through treatment manipulation, while controlling for the spurious effect of extraneous variable.Experimental research is best suited for explanatory research, where the goal of the study is to examine cause effect relationships. It also works well for research that involves a relatively limited and well defined set of independent variables that can either be manipulated or controlled. Experimental research can be conducted in laboratory or field
d. Survey research is one of the best methods for gathering a vast amount of original data on a large population.
One major disadvantage of survey questionnaires is the possibility of low response rates. Low response would most likely be the curse of statistical analysis .I’m sure this can dramatically lower our confidence in the results, however well-designed studies consistently produce high response rates. Another disadvantage of survey methods is the inability to probe responses. Questionnaires are structured instruments. They allow little flexibility to the respondent with respect to response format. In essence, they often lose the "flavor of the response". I think by allowing frequent space for comments, the researcher can partially overcome this disadvantage. Comments
The philosophical justification for survey research is cost containment with a large volume of research. It is also one of the most efficient and quick methods to gather large amounts of information. Data analysis can be completed in a short period of time and generalization is better, particularly when the representative sample is of a population. It also helps elimination of bias in result interpretation as subjects have the ability to remain anonymous.
27. When psychologists send out questionnaires to many people to gather information: This is a survey and it describes the design of the experiment, because it is a type of way to gather data.
Surveys and Polls can be used as a way to obtain facts on a certain subject, but they may not all be as reliable as they
Primarily, a survey is a beneficial tactic because it asks respondents very specific and direct questions. This means that the information being investigated will be discovered. By this, it also ensures that all respondents are answering the same questions, therefore; resulting in reliable data. In addition to this, surveys seem to be of low cost since they do not require a lot of materials. Results can also be complied quickly and efficiently due to technology. If necessary, a survey could allow for a sampling of certain regions or specific sports in order to compare and contrast the salaries that men and women acquire of equivalent athletic professions. Surveys act as a simple method of capturing the most precise opinions which means that utilizing surveys could result in high representativeness for the concept being
“Problems researched with the use of appropriate methods greatly enhance the value of the research.” (Sekaran, 2003) Data can be collected through interviews, questionnaires, observations, and through other techniques, like projective tests. In even more detail, interviews can be conducted in a variety of different ways such as over the phone, through the computer, interviews through the electronic media, and face-to-face. Questionnaires can be conducted personally or administered electronically. “Interviewing, administering questionnaires, and observing people and phenomena are the three main data collection methods in survey research.” (Sekaran, 2003) As stated before, data can be collected in many different ways; however the value of the research is only greatly enhanced when personal opinions and bias is left out of the collection of data.
Survey: a form of research that gathers information about attitudes or behaviors through the answers that people give to questions.
The survey method is commonly used in correlation and descriptive studies. A survey is less in depth than the case study. Surveys ask people to tell about their own opinions or behavior. When asking questions one must be careful of how the question is worded, this can be known as wording effects.
Looks very simple, but to me, it changes me a lot. There before I did not do any questionnaire survey. Also when I received a questionnaire, I just click it one to one. I have never thought that this is very important to the person who makes the questionnaire survey.Form our group questionnaire survey,I know the importance of it.When I gave the questionnaire to the investigator, my feeling is I hope they can pay attention to this survey and they can seriously complete this form.At the beginning, I felt nervous because I did not know how to give them and how to talk to them. But under my group members help, they helped me to talk to them and let me make more friends.
In order to establish validity, the survey will need to be conducted amongst a large enough sample of subjects.
Surveys (segregated technique designed to test perceptions regarding a product or service) depict quantitative data that will help in the developmental stage of a product or service. This tool is most often used regarding sensitive data. It is relatively inexpensive. Observation is primarily used at the point of sale of a product or service. This tool depicts emotional reactions to products or services.
The online survey is easy to use for respondents when compare to other method like interview as people can access internet to answer survey, complete the survey in a short time. Increase in internet use communication can benefit the research, online survey research was a time-consuming task, different participants can do the survey at the same time and it is convenience and easy to reach people.
In survey method research, participants answer questions administered through interviews or questionnaires. After participants answer the questions, researchers describe the responses given. In order for the survey to be both reliable and valid it is important that the questions are constructed properly. Questions should be written so they are clear and easy to comprehend.
The major advantage of observation studies over surveys, which obtain self-reported data from respondents, is that the data are free from distortions, inaccuracies, or other response biases due to memory error, social desirability bias, and so on. The data are recorded when the actual behavior takes place.
