It cannot be denied that teaching music is not easy. It is not like teaching a language, where you are either right or wrong. Music has so many components to it with different features and genres . To cater for teaching this broad subject, many teachers have slipped into the habit of teaching music and music history using the “periods of music” approach. In my opinion, there are many advantages and disadvantages to this method. There is a broad range of musical periods today such as the Medieval period, The Renaissance period, the Baroque period, the Classical period, the Romantic period and the Modern period. Whilst similarities are common between the different eras, there are many distinctive traits to specific musical periods. Although polyphonic pieces were being experimented with in the 13-15 century, it was not until the Baroque period that the polyphonic textured pieces began to come together. The Baroque composers are well known for using the polyphonic texture such as Merker. Polyphonic texture refers to when they combined two or more melodies together, creating a dimensional difference. This came at no surprise considering as Baroque music was known to be for the more intelligent, upper-class people of society. This is why Classical music is so distinctive in comparison to Baroque music. Unlike the compound pieces from the baroque period, Classical music is mainly appreciated for its forms and the focus of attention in this music falls on the work, not the performance. It is usually a homophonic texture meaning it only had one main melody which was accompanied. Unlike the Baroque period which has consistent moods throughout the pieces, classical music had contrasting moods. So although similarities between musical periods can make it hard to distinguish what era it is from, there are noticeable traits in each era which make it easy to recognise them. The Classical period of music has also been called the “Rococo” period. The Classical time period was between the 18th and 19th centuries. Spanning the years of 1750-1820. The transition from the Baroque period to the Classical took the music from polyphonic to homophonic where even though it seems like that would make the music less complex we look at a whole different type of complexity. The music typically contained two different melodies and a contrast in sections. This made the chords in the music much more defined and the tonal part of the music became more defined. The Classical period had a significant influence on several aspects of music. Chamber music had a sonata form. This means it had an exposition, a transition, and a recapitulation. Composition in the Classical time was mainly dominated by eclecticism which made the music more diverse. Concerto was driven at first by the Italians. They started the idea of the solo concerto. Orchestration was mainly developed during this musical time period. This is partly due to some of the most talented musicians that lived during this time. They did a lot of work in making the orchestra mainly string instruments. Some of these being the violin, viola, cello, and the contrabass, just to name a few. All of these things had a great influence in the way the music made the transition from the Baroque period to the Classical period.
The Baroque Era and the Classical Era are two critical time periods in observing music. Some of the most famous composers have written pieces that are popular in the world today. The two periods share many similar characteristics, however new genres and forms developed throughout each period because of new ideas and knowledge spreading. My personal favorite is the Baroque period because of the abundance of new musical knowledge that was introduced, particularly in Vivaldi’s famous piece La Primavera, Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra, Op. 8, No. 1, I.
New ideas and art was being introduced everywhere. It was a time of personal expression and drama. There was controversy between Catholics and Protestants which caused long periods of religious war. It was also a time of scientific research and astronomical studies.
The Classical time period, which spanned a length of seventy years, from 1750 to 1820, was very different in nature from its predecessor, the Baroque time period. The Baroque era featured works that were ornamentally elaborate, where the artists and composers centered their works on a big, bold style that was dramatic in its composition. Artists and composers transferred strong feelings of tension and emotion into their works and it was common for there to be some type of action or movement happening within the work. Those who lived in the Classical time period, valued simplicity and wanted to return to the ideals of the Greeks. Therefore, the Classical time period is characterized by clear structural clarity, simplicity, smoothness, and symmetry. However, though the works took a step back from the grand movement of the Baroque era, the composers and artists of the Classical time period did lay out a tuneful and elegant style in their music and art. Out of the Classical era came many renowned artists and composers, two of those whom are artist Sir Thomas Lawrence and composer Ludwig van Beethoven (“NYU”).

For this Assignment, I will be analyzing an exam from my MUS351: Elementary Methods Course. This exam constituted as the midterm covering an array of topics pertaining to the foundation of teaching music to students in primary grades. I did rather well on this exam, missing only two questions. In this analysis, I will discuss how I prepared for the exam, where the question came from, the type and topic of the questions I missed. Analyzing these things will allow for me to develop a better study plan to benefit my performance on future exams.

Music has been categorized over time in different periods, each of which have their own characteristics, composers and music style. Two of those important periods were baroque and romantic, which had left an important musical legacy though history. The baroque was the period from about 1600 to 1750. At this time last year, I would have considered all music before the 20th century to be classical. However, after taking a Dual Credit Music Appreciation course, I realized that “old” music cannot simply be grouped into a single category. There are so many differences that I had no idea existed. Throughout the years, music has changed and evolved, meeting the needs of listeners and performers. Different composers have been catalysts in this change as they have developed new styles and genres. Even though the classical period is directly subsequent of the baroque period, baroque and classical music have countless different qualities and characteristics.
The classical music period extends from 1740 to 1810, which includes the music of Haydn, Mozart, and the first period of Beethoven. The classical period of music combined harmony, melody, rhythm, and orchestration more effectively than earlier periods of music. With the natural evolution of music slowly changing with the culture, the baroque era had ended. That era had left a structure, articulation and periodic phrasing of music which would shape classical music.
There are not many people in this world who do not listen to at least some form of music weather it be pop or rock music on the radio, or the classical music of Beethoven or Mozart. Each genre and style is very unique in it’s own way and some styles are more appealing to one person than another. That is why it is very important to expand the types of music taught in educational music programs.
