All About Auschwitz
Imagine living in a wood hut, each 100 feet by 30 feet for 5 years (Sheehan 17), with people all around getting sick and dying. Auschwitz is the most known concentration camp from the holocaust. “It was originally made for a prison work camp for a variety of inmates, especially jews and political prisoners” (Sheehan 16). From 1940’s to 1945 Auschwitz expanded, they made 2 other camps called Auschwitz- Birkenau and Auschwitz- Monowitz. Over 960,000 people have died in these camps. Auschwitz was established in mid-1940. “Auschwitz was the largest camp established by the germans”(Macmillan 93).From late 1941 and early 1942, Auschwitz began functioning as a death camp for Jews, and from 1943 also for Roma (Gypsies). “It was a complex of camps, including a concentration, extermination, and forced labor camp”(Macmillan 93).It was difficult to determine the exact number of victims at Auschwitz. Seventy to seventy-five percent of the transports were sent directly to the gas chambers, without being entered into the camp's records. But many believed about 1.1 million prisoners died. On May 26 in the late 1941 they began planning to make another camp known as Auschwitz-Birkenau. “ It opened in 1940 and was the largest of the Nazi concentration and camp”. Auschwitz-Birkenau became the killing centre where the largest numbers of European Jews that were killed during the Holocaust. After an experimental gassing, in September 1941, 850 starved and ill prisoners, mass murder became a daily routine. 85 years ago, over a 12 year period, nearly six million Jews were killed in a genocide called The Holocaust. The Holocaust was led by the Nazi Party and Adolf Hitler was their leader. The mass murders took place at concentration camps throughout Europe. The majority of concentration camps resided in Poland and Germany. Many people believe there were only a few concentration camps. “However, researchers found that the Nazis had actually established 20,000 camps between 1933 and 1945” (“How Many Camps,” n.d.). In this paper I will be discussing the largest concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
October of 1941 was when Auschwitz II was built, located just outside of Brzezinka, which later developed into a concentration and extermination camp. The camp included 300 prison barracks, 4 large “bathhouses” where prisons were gassed to death, corpse cellars where their bodies were held, and cremating ovens (Berenbaum, Auschwitz). Auschwitz III was created in May of 1942, near the village of Dwory, a slave-labor camp supplying workers for nearby factories (Berenbaum, Auschwitz). Those deemed fit to work were employed as slave labor in the production of munitions, synthetic rubber and other products considered essential to Germany’s efforts in World War II (Auschwitz, History.com). Auschwitz also became the nexus of 45 smaller slave labor sub-camps in the region (Berenbaum, Auschwitz). Rudolf Franz Höss was the commandant of the central Auschwitz camps (Berenbaum,
Auschwitz was one of the largest and first concentration camp during WW2 and next to Auschwitz were two other death camps that were named Auschwitz ll and lll. At Auschwitz, there was a total of 8 gas chambers and 4 of them can hold up to 2,000 prisoners (Mostly Jews) at a time. There were 11 million people murdered in the Holocaust and it estimated that 6 million Jews were killed and one in six was killed at Auschwitz.
Of all of the death camps built by the Nazis during World War II, none was larger or more destructive than the terrifying Auschwitz camp. Auschwitz was built by the Nazis in 1940, in Oswiecim, Poland, and was composed of three main parts. Auschwitz I was built in June 1940 and was intended to hold and kill Polish political prisoners. Auschwitz II-Birkenau, which opened October 1941, was larger and could contain over 100,000 inmates. Auschwitz III-Monowitz provided slave labor for a plant close by. In addition, there were many sub-camps. The most important camp at Auschwitz designed for the extermination of many people was Birkenau; numerous gas chambers and crematoria were established there, mainly to murder and incinerate Jews as
One point two five million people killed, worked to death, then sent up in flames. One point two five million people that is the number of people the concentration camp Auschwitz killed. Auschwitz, the most vile of the concentration camps in Europe, was built in 1940. Its design was such that it was the home of the most deaths and worst medical experiments out of the other concentration camps. The focus on Auschwitz pertaining to its structure and design, its mortality rate, and the horrific medical experiments performed by Doctor Josef Mengele all combined to make Auschwitz the hell on Earth that it was.
In 1940 Auschwitz was established in the suburbs of Oswiecim. Oswiecim is a Polish city that was annexed to the Third Reich by the Nazis. Auschwitz was established because there were too many Polish people in the local prisons. In 1942 Auschwitz became a death camp and it was the largest known. (http://auschwitz.org/, n.d.) The camp was expanded throughout its existence, this resulted in Auschwitz consisting of three camps. The three camps were Main Camp, Birkenau, and Monowitz. Main Camp was known as Auschwitz I, Birkenau was known as Auschwitz II, and Monowitz was known as Auschwitz III. (Preisler, n.d.) Auschwitz was liberated in 1945. “Historians and analysts estimate the number of people murdered at Auschwitz somewhere between 2.1 million
On April 27, 1941, the order was given to begin the building of the largest and deadliest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz, in a town called Oswiecim (Smolen et al. 2). The Nazis began deporting the locals of the town so that the camp would be as isolated as possible and to have somewhere to sleep. The locals were sent away without any kind of payment for their homes or lands (Smolen et al. 3). It was then ordered that some three-hundred Jewish prisoners would be sent to begin construction of the camp. By the time Auschwitz was completed, there were 28 two story buildings to house the prisoners. As time went on the need for another camp arose. Camp Birkenau, later to be named Auschwitz II, was built about 3km. away and could house another 200,000 prisoners (Smolen et al. 4 and 5).
Auschwitz was a killing and labor camp (Auschwitz). 1 ¼ million people , mostly jews, were killed at the camp(Auschwitz). It had 3 main camps and more than 40 smaller camps (Auschwitz) . Auschwitz 1 began in 1940 and was for political polish prisoners(Auschwitz). Auschwitz ll began in march 1942 and was an extermination camp that had 4 large gas chambers(Auschwitz).
Auschwitz was one of the most infamous and largest concentration camp known during World War II. It was located in the southwestern part of Poland commanded by Rudolf Höss. Auschwitz was first opened on June 14, 1940, much later than most of the other camps. It was in Auschwitz that the lives of so many were taken by methods of the gas chamber, crematoriums, and even from starvation and disease. These methods took "several hundreds and sometimes more than a thousand" lives a day. The majority of the lives killed were those of Jews although Gypsies, Yugoslavs, Poles, and many others of different ethnic backgrounds as well. The things most known about Auschwitz are the process people went through when entering the camp and

Auschwitz was the worst, and most well known concentration camp involved within WWII. This camp held about 25% of all prisoners in the camp “community”. Auschwitz was made up of many sub camps including its most well known one, Birkenau. The concentration camps were the pinnacle of terror for anyone to be captured. How they worked, why they were built, and the impact they had are all to come.
