American Nursing Association History

Professional nursing associations (PNA) can be at a state or national level and is an organization to bring nurses together to promote quality care and measures through observation, experience, education and research.

I made the decision to join the health care field based on my own desire, love of the people that live and thrive around me, and to be a role model for my daughter. I feel it is important to have a goal in life, and it is important to me to show my daughter the value of goals, and achieving them as well. I love meeting new people, and being able to lend a helping hand in any way I possibly can. What better way to help the general population then to have a profession in the health care industry.

One purpose of AANN is to devise and implement the advocacy program that will allow AANN to respond to various endorsements and initiatives. The Advocacy tool kit they offer allows its members to educate, enlighten, and inspire people interested in healthcare issues to become well-informed about the legislative process and become involved in health policy advocacy (AANN, 2015b).

The association endeavors to enhance high standards of nursing practice by promoting safety and ethical decision making. The association represent nurses in lobbying regulatory agencies on issues related to policy and legal development. The association is involved in establishing the standards of nursing practice. Professional organizations play important roles in regulating professional practice and supporting, the role of State Boards of Nursing in their roles. Professional organizations and associations in nursing are critical for generating the energy, flow of ideas, and proactive work needed to maintain a healthy profession that advocates for the needs of its clients and nurses, and the trust of society (Matthews, 2012). The characteristics and role of the history of professional nursing organizations, is the advocacy activities, of professional nursing organizations, directly related to the State Boards of nursing and practice (Health Care Reform, 2017 and Matthews, 2012)

The advantages of becoming an active member of the professional nursing organization are as follows: education it offers (nursing courses to advance medical practice); attendance of various conferences and meeting nurses of the same specialties; networking (connecting with different healthcare professionals at local, state and national conferences); and certification (certified nurse practice) (Greggs-McQuilkin, 2005). The Oklahoma Board of Nursing (OBN) provides information to the public about the services of the Board of Nursing (OBN, n.d.). The purpose of the OBN is to “safeguard the public’s health by ensuring that licensed nurses are qualified and competent to practice” (OBN, n.d.). The public has access to the OBN to inquire on current licensed nurses, Nurse Practice Act, and guidelines about nursing care (OBN, n.d.). The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the “only full-service professional organization” that represents registered nurses’ interest through associations and partners (ANA, 2014). Their mission is “nurses advancing our profession to improve health for all” (ANA, 2014). They promote nursing practice by setting high standards, promoting nurses’ rights, leading a realistic outlook of nursing, and “by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public” (ANA, 2014). The National League for Nursing (NLN) is an organization for any nursing-related faculty offering “faculty development programs, networking opportunities, testing and assessment, nursing research grants, and public policy” (NLN, 2013). Their mission is to “promote excellence in nursing education to build a strong and diverse nursing workforce to advance the nations health” (NLN, 2013).

According to American Nurses Association [ANA] (2013), advocacy is the key element in the nursing profession and during lobby day, nurse 's expertise is valued and acknowledged in the policy development process. Energized by the U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding most of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the American Nurses Association (ANA) is continuing its wide ranging efforts to ensure that Registered Nurses (RNs) have an even greater role in providing high quality care as implementation of the landmark law progresses. As guiding principles, ANA contends that health care is a basic human right, and that all deserve access to essential health care services. As nurses witness every day, a lack of primary and preventive care can cause people's manageable chronic conditions to spiral, leading to poorer patient outcomes and increased overall health care costs. Regarding the history of Nurse Practitioners, in 1965 the first Nurse Practitioner program was developed ("Historical Timeline."). The program was developed by Dr. Loretta Ford and Dr. Henry Silver and was provided at the University of Colorado ("Historical Timeline."). I am glad that I have chosen to enter the Cox ASN program because I have always wanted to help people live a healthier lifestyle. My goal is to be an advocate for the patients and to bridge the communication between the patient and their doctors. I want every patient to understand the choices they will be making regarding their health. Also, I want to contribute to positive patient care and outcomes for the Cox medical system. In 1969, the foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association was created (NSNA). This organization main goal is to teach and help future Registered Nurses with the skills need to be successful in their profession (NSNA). In the Health care industry a Registered Nurse has the opportunity to move up the ladder and become a skilled professional in a higher position, such as, a head nurse or a manager in their department. In the United States alone there are well over three million registered nurses as of 2015, with just over two hundred thousand of that total practicing within the state of Florida (Total Number of Professionally Active Nurses, 2015, n.p.). With that being said, there are many different nursing organizations available within the United States to represent not only the registered nurse, but also to represent the student nurse as well. Reasons I would join the American Nurses Association include the online higher learning and continuing education opportunities, membership fees helping further advocacy efforts on reforms of all nurses including, the Affordable Care Act, RN Reinvestment Act, and Needle stick Safety and Prevention Act, and membership also supporting periodicals including The American Nurse, American Nurse Today, and the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing. Because science and technology are constantly evolving, nurses need to keep up with the changes that affect the healthcare system. Continuing education courses are required to stay up-to-date in nursing practices and ANA offers them with discounted prices. ANA offers many peer-reviewed clinical articles that pertain to my field of expertise. I can gain a personal and professional support system of other nurses who can share my interests and concerns thru ANA. I can voice my issues that affect my nursing practice and licensure.
