The 1960’s was a decade filled with revolution across America, in the forms of both counterculture and pop culture. The second wave of feminism ran rampant, powered by Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique. The role of the housewife began to be placed under the microscope and women started to wonder aloud whether they were truly happen being second-rate to their husbands. The television sitcoms of the 1960’s displayed this change in thinking, one sitcom specifically being I Dream of Jeannie. The plot of I Dream of Jeannie centered on an astronaut named Major Tony Nelson and his incidental discovery of a genie in a bottle. This genie, named Jeannie, saves Nelson from the island he is stranded on and she stows away in his luggage to follow
The young sisters, who know little about their father’s suffering, make fun of the hole without knowing the consequence of their action. The father is unable to intervene on his daughters’ behalf, as he sits there “face paled.” (40), till the mother orders the children to keep quiet. Apparently, his role in the family structure prevents him from expressing his emotion directly to his children. Nevertheless, after a visit to the doctor, it turns out that the father’s internal organs are intact despite their state of severe deformation, which shows the father’s incredible determination to remain functional in his family role after his tragic loss. Ironically, the doctors “pronounced him in great health” (41), which implies that apparent defects in mental health could be suppressed by the father’s unwillingness to challenge his image as a man, thus they are not easily detectable. The father’s behavioral patterns after his father’s death are in accordance to many stereotypical views of men.
Rewinding back to the 1950’s, I Love Lucy was one of the most popular sitcoms on television. There were two main characters and they happen to be married. This highlights the realistic atmosphere prevailing as well as reflects the true meaning of relationship. The readers are exposed to the mother-son relationship. It can be seen that even if the narrator is a twenty-year old law student, he is still the little boy who needed his neck scrubbed from the point of view of the mother. Whatever good advice the son gives, it is not followed and instead he is given a lecture. This is a typical mother-son relationship which shows that no matter how much a child grows, he always remains a little kid for the mother. Moreover, the readers also notice the routine life of the narrator and his mother. The boy used to accompany his mother to work and help her which makes a four-hour job becomes two. Since its start, the television industry has been criticized for perpetuating myths and stereotypes about African-Americans through characterizations, story lines, and plots. The situation comedy has been the area that has seemed to draw the most criticism, analysis, and disapproval for stereotyping. From Sanford and Son and The Jefferson’s in the 1970s to The Cosby Show (1984) and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 1990s, sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. However, their significance upon our American culture cannot be disregarded. During the 1950s and 1960s, 97% of the families were Caucasian. In the first five years of the
Although ‘Men Behaving Badly’ is not that much older than ‘Friends’ the more recent episodes of Friends are quite different to the final episodes of M.B.B.
Lucille Ball once said, “ I’m not funny what I am is brave.” Why should you watch I Love Lucy. Though, people thought this show wouldn’t work to being one of my favorite shows of all time. You will learn to love I Love Lucy.
What I think makes a good sitcom, is one that incorporates relatability to situations, variety of characters, and situational humor. I recently watched an episode of the sitcom the Office titled The Injury, and this episode would not fit my requirements for a good sitcom. I found this installment of the office to be rather quiet dull. This particular episode focused around Michael, and a foot injury he received at his home. Michael uses this injury as an opportunity to become the center of attention around the office, and demands total respect from everyone on the subject of his injury. This really bothered me as a view because I don’t enjoy characters that put their needs before the needs of others. This selfishness on Michael's part is personified
Desilu’s iconic show “I Love Lucy” did not only break the industry norm for television broadcasting but pushed the envelope for social issues during its time but also open the door for other shows that seemed risky. America was in the post-war era and looked towards the television to stay informed and connected. Television sets were quickly entering homes which became what the radio was in 1920’s. It became a prominent product during the decade of the 50’s, for instance, 3 million TV owners and by the end, there were 55 million. The concept for the situational comedy was nothing out of the ordinary, following a typical housewife, through comedic hijinks, in her everyday life. Lucille’s portrayal of this ditzy schemer did not exactly fit the view of a traditional American 1950’s housewife, revealing the show’s willingness to push social issues. Lucille Ball insisted that her real-life husband Desi Arnaz play her husband in the show. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were the first on-screen interracial couple. One of the biggest displays of “I Love Lucy” pushing the envelope was her real-life pregnancy on the show, which at the time
How To Get Away With Murder, a modern 2015 law and murder television drama, and I Love Lucy, a 1951 live audience comedic sitcom, hold many differences in regards to color and lighting usage. However, if thoroughly analyzed similarities can be discovered.
However, I was covering topics that most women were going through, problems most shows did not cover. This is important, because it shows how strong I was, I kept a show going even without a husband, while I was left to care for my children alone. It was hard, but I kept going and I kept the show successful and good. My acting instructor told me that I had no talent. I clearly did have talent, because I was picked for “50 Greatest TV Stars of All Time”. “I Love Lucy” was one of my best achievements of all time, I was really proud of myself for having this show and getting so far in my career with it. Many people were fond of me and the show itself, that’s pretty amazing if you ask me. I am certain that my show was amazing, I worked hard to
