This article was written by Barbra Kellerman, she has been an advocate and a professor of public leadership. Her academics and skills have been recognized throughout the world. In 2009, she was one of the “Top 50 Business Thinkers” according to Forbes. She was also ranked by Leadership Excellence as one of the Top 15 Best Minds on Leadership in 2008-2009. When Barbra Kellerman talks, people do listen. (Kellerman, B. 2012). In this article, she expresses her concerns how leadership has become easier to resist in recent years, and consequently, followers are ascendant (rising in power) and leaders are in decline. She describes this change as a “seismic shift” and this article shows how the shift occurred, which equates to what the author calls a “crisis in leadership.” (Kellerman, B. 2012).

Yes, this does equate to the decline of leaders as the need for leaders as a generalization is becoming a mute cause. If the followers are becoming leaders, then what is the need for leaders? Leaders are always in need in some respect or aspect of today’s societies. No matter how many followers become leaders, this only equates to a stronger “whole” of competent people that can lead if needed, it just means that the leader pool for selection is larger than ever. In the Leadership Challenge, 4th edition, it is Kouzes & Posner (2007) intention to present a road map for individuals to follow on their leadership journey. The authors stress that “leadership is not a gene and it’s not an inheritance.” Leadership they assert is “an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us” (p. 23). They make clear that the “great person” theory of leadership is “plain wrong.” Leaders are our everyday heroes who do extraordinary things on a regular basis (p. 23).
Leadership today has taken on a new definition and appearance due to the advancement of technology and lack of knowledge about how far we have come as a newly improved generation. The decisions that one makes rightful intertwine with their leadership style, which rest upon the lessons taught by their mentor and personal experiences. Some of the world’s most influential leaders such as Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and Winston Churchill will always be distinct leaders who people can model themselves after because of their leadership rituals and strategic tactics. In order to develop more influential leaders, people must educate themselves on past policy makers and how they implemented change.
Leaders need followers, and followers need leaders. Entering a doctoral program at Concordia University with a background in leadership and organizational development, I felt fairly confident that I would be able to successfully define what it means to serve as a leader. Early in my studies, I recall proudly examining my bookshelves as I perused titles such as, The Art of War, How to The Articulate Executive, In Search of Excellence, Leadership Brand, and Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done. This sense of pride was short lived, as I discovered through my studies that most of these titles, and countless others in my library, offered complicated and often opposing perspectives on what it means to serve as a leader. The majority of these works focus primarily on a myriad of skills and techniques that the leader may employ in order for them or their business to succeed. As a result of this haze, would be leaders are often left wondering why they are not successful while pursuing these approaches. The answer to these lack luster results is quite simple. The typical leadership perspective has been consumed by focusing on the leaders success rather than on the success of those they lead. Old paradigms of leadership represented by authoritarian (Brown, 2013) styles of management which seek advantage through the collection of resources, power, and information have proven to be ineffective and have distracted many from the basic need of a leader to serve others.
Leaders don’t have to confine their leadership abilities within the jurisdiction of their own. Sometimes, we have a chain of events unfolding in front of us and based on our experiences we know they would lead to undesirable outcomes. As I have grown up and gone through some life experiences, I have seen different types of leaders. Every individual has their own perception on what a leader is to them. What is a leader? What characteristics does a leader have? Are leaders born or made? These questions, along with many more throughout the process have given a general idea of what a good leader entails. This grouped included 17 anonymous interviews that provides the thoughts and opinions of what leadership is, which include similarities across the board along with some differences.

This paper will seek to explore the challenges that emerge when leading change in hostile environments.
