Hogg and Vaughn (2008) proposed that paralinguistic features used to communicate a message between sender and receiver, would impact on how the message was interpreted by the audience. When performing my presentation to the class, my verbal communication needed to be clear and concise to get an accurate message to the receiver. In order to achieve this, I needed to speak at an appropriate volume, so not to shout at the audience, conveying an aggressive form of communication but also not to be coy so that I could not be heard. In conjunction with volume, the pitch and pace at which I communicated was also important.
However, due to being nervous, I spoke with a high pitch, low volume and at a fast pace. This had a negative impact on how the information was communicated to the audience. It exerted anxiety and urgency from the sender to the receiver, which caused a barrier to communication. In reflection of this experience, I have learnt that by controlling my verbal communication, I can converse with confidence and ensure a clear message is received.
A leader is a person who strives to achieve goals by influencing people towards success. I feel I was a natural leader within the group, adopting House’s Path Goal Theory – Four Leadership Style. House (1975) stated that the behaviour of a leader is important for good performance. My main roles as a leader were to co-ordinate and motivate my group to meet deadlines and goals and to support members when giving ideas contributing
Being a leader is more than simply holding a leadership position or having the ability to lead. Everyone is capable of being a leader, but not everyone exercises his or her leadership abilities. Each person’s idea of leadership is different. My idea of leadership has developed over time, and being a member of the President’s Leadership Class has helped me develop my philosophy of leadership further than what it was two months ago. My personal philosophy of leadership is the ability to effect change through leading by example, taking initiative, and encouraging others.
I am originally from Puerto Rico, which is a country in which communication is an integral part of society. The cultural norm of the Puerto Rican culture is to speak up when necessary and communicate clearly if we want things to be done. At the same time, I believe that in order to produce results, the manner in which communicating takes place, is an extremely important component. My culture also showed me how the emotions used when communicating, such as the use of the hands and body language, will dictate the tone and flow of the communication. The literature suggests that the majority (as much as 76%) of the message we gibe to another person during conversations is carried by non-verbal or para-verbal communication. Thus, we must be very careful and strategic in our use o non-verbal communication (Van Acker, 1997).
The traditional concept of a leader, as being the directing chief at the top of a hierarchy, is now considered to be inadequate to truly lead a modern organisation. Leadership is concerned with people and so anyone, and indeed everybody, has the potential to demonstrate leadership qualities and behaviours.
A leader is someone who leads a group, organization, or country. I believe an effective leader is confident, unbiased, open to new ideas, and will be organized so they can run the group effectively. What good would a leader do if they’re always missing due dates, if they’re scared of people, or don’t know what they’re doing? You don’t want an unqualified leader because then we won’t be successful in whatever we decide to do this year. I am all of these qualities that make a great leader, plus I have some experience from NJHS. I am a very organized and precise person, meaning everything will be in its place, everything will meet deadlines, and events will be planned in advance and thoroughly thought through. Im very confident in what I do,
Before going through this journey of self-discovery, my view of leadership was accurately described by John C. Maxwell “ Leadership is influence.” (Maxwell, para. 25, 2012). I believed, before taking this class and Northouse’s (2013) assessments, leaders were defined by the extent to which they could influence others to achieve company goals. I thought that, when discussing leadership, the leader was the most important aspect of the leader-member dyad and that it was the leader who had the greatest influence over how successful the organization was. Leaders themselves, in my view, should have been the focus of leadership studies and it should have been up to the leader to develop his/her skills in
By definition a leader is a person who leads or commands a group however, I believe a leader should be a person who inspires his team excel in the worst of conditions. A leader should be extraordinary reliable as the team should know that the leader could guide them to the best of his abilities toward their goal. A leader should be persistent as they should be the motivational force leading the group. A leader should be patient and calm knowing that quality takes time and that the individual member of his team have obstacles to overcome on their own part.
Leader: “A leader is a person willing to show others what to do, someone who influences others to follow to achieve a goal. You have to have a vision or there is no goal to achieve. I have to be able to direct and take direction from my subordinates to be an effective leader. A leader is honest, dependable, caring, and knowledgeable, listens to ideas from other team mates, and is available to answer questions or just listen to problems whether work related or personal.”
Abstract: There are numerous definitions of leadership, all of which contain elements related to people (the leader and the follower(s)), communicating in person or by the written word, actions (organizing, directing, coaching, and/or motivating), and for a purpose (meeting a goal(s) or accomplishing a task(s)) (ADP 6-22) (Fisher 2015) (Bolden 2013) (Hogan 2005). Additionally, everything done occurs within a given context. Effective leaders are poised, proficient, pertinent, and practical in the application of the art of leadership. This means leaders are ready to engage the group with effective methods and
For many years, I have been told by teachers, family, and friends that I am a good leader. Until fairly recently, I had never truly thought about what it means to be a good leader and just took it as a compliment. Leadership is an intangible concept which cannot be properly outlined in a dictionary, but one which must be formed and explained only through one’s own philosophies and experiences.
Classical organisational theorist defined leadership in terms of achieving a group’s objectives R.C Davies (1942) referred to leadership as “the principle dynamic forces that motivates and coordinates the organisation in the accomplishment of its objectives.” Similarly, Urwick (1953) stated that the leader is “the personification of common purpose not only to all who work under taking, but to everyone outside it.” K. Davies (1962) defined leadership as “the human factor which binds a group together and motivates it towards goals.” Cattell (1951) took the extreme position that leadership is whatever or whoever contributes to the group’s performance. To measure each members Leadership, Cattell noted, removed him or her from the group, one at a time, and observe what happens to the group’s performance. Calder (1977) and Pfeffer (1977) “stated that leadership is mainly influence and is even attributed to participants after the fact.
I found the Amy Cuddy Ted Talk as a very interesting video. It goes into great detail on different ways to communicate with other people more efficiently. The main spect she focused on was body language, she stated it should be more than half of what you focus on in communicating. I never knew how important body language is to communication, I always thought your voice and tone is the most important part of communication. But it turns out body language actually has a greater impact in speaking with others and can help with a person's energy and confidence.

A leader is a person who takes risks, attempts to achieve shared goals, and inspires others to action (Marquis & Huston,
If the speaker does not know the audience then he or she will interpret the Chinese’s eye contact to be surprised and not angered. The next consideration a speaker must keep in mind is that when presenting an oral communication, how the speaker carries his or her voice is crucial from the audience point of view. The speaker’s tone of voice, whether rising or lowering the voice, indicates if he or she is uncertain or confident and whether the speaker is sincere or sarcastic. The pitch of the speaker’s voice from low to high will determine the effectiveness of the presentation. Low-pitched voices are more pleasant to listen to than high-pitched voices; on the other hand, there are times when high-pitched voices are required such as to show excitement for goals met. Besides watching for the voice pitch, the speaker must remember to stress a word or words in the sentence to emphasize the main points of the presentation. Also the speaker must ensure the volume of his or her tone can be heard by the audience who sits in the back room without shouting. Speakers who change their tone, pitch, and stress as they speak are more enthusiastic, energetic, and more intelligent (Locker & Kienzler, 2008).
I am one of those who suffer from butterflies, that uncomfortable feeling in my chest and stomach, before speaking in public. This is not only a problem for myself, but it is also a common fear and a concern for many people. My purpose is to denounce a few dynamics I feel have helped me to become a more effective speaker and to manage my butterflies. I will prove to you that strong body language makes ideas and feelings more clear, vigorous and engaging. First, I will show how eye contact unconsciously engages the audience. Second, I will prove that vocal emphasis is the key to a vigorous speech. Third, I will confirm that gestures reinforce the ideas of the speech, making the speech
