In the article “In Praise of the F word”, Mary Sherry states students need to take responsibility in their education. Personally, as a student taking responsibility for your education means completing my assignments, studying and acing all my tests. The ability to succeed in life is a valuable gift and many people take advantage of their chance. I can relate to this because in high school I was very lazy and never took school seriously until end of junior year. Once I put motivation into my classes, I got back on track. Thinking about my future motivates me to do better. Instead of just skimming through the lesson, I apply my knowledge into it. Honestly, the last thing on my mind is to live with a crappy job. If I have a loss of motivation
The title of the article is In Praise Of The F Word, which I think it’s referring to the word failure ,failure of our education system to teach the children basic skills and letting them graduate without having the capabilities of a graduate should have . The “F” word does not increase the effectiveness of the article because these type of informative article usually require the writer to tell the facts to the readers, although the word failure is stated many times in the article but not everyone has the same intellectual level to understand the phases. The writer of the article “In Praise Of The F Word” is Mary Sherry. Mary Sherry is the mother of three and grandmother of four resides in Burnsville, Minnesota. She has written numerous articles on general subjects and on spirituality in America, Newsweek, St. Anthony Messenger, Newsday, Catholic Digest, The Wall Street Journal and Liguorian. She teaches English grammar at night to adult students who dropped out of high school or who graduated without learning how to read and write well enough to keep a job. Her own son, when he was a senior in high school, nearly flunked English until his teacher threatened him with failure and he turned his semester around.
But before addressing the idea of motivation, the idea of mindset must be established. a person with a fixed mindset or unmotivated personality will find themselves less motivated and unable to grow as a result. They will seek the baseline evaluations and only wish to go as far as they will be praised for. Neither side looks to the future or challenges the impossible and in the end they end up with almost nothing in comparison to another person with a better adapted personality and mindset. For example, my mindset is growth but with ripples of fixed usually resting in areas of gaming or art. This is because in those two areas my mindset for improvement is unneeded because my muscle memory corrects itself over time and, for art, I seek praise only because I personally feel that my art is perfect in my own world. However, this is only my mindset outside of college and varies greatly from my working mindset.
Mary Paul’s letter is a synopsis of her journey of being a Lowell mill girl. Mary begins the letter to her father using the word “well” to describe her current state. However, following that statement and leading up to the ending she describes events and emotions that doesn’t correlate with being just well. Using the word “well” was a sign of Mary’s humbleness because although conditions were rough, when she thought about other’s situations she realizes it could have been worse and she remained hopeful. This is evident by her statement “My life and health are spared while others are cut off.” Mary’s work schedule was very rigorous and did not allow her much leisure as mentioned in the letter and pay was extremely minimum. If I were in Mary
If you compare today to the early 19th and 20th century, you’ll see how people feel about learning is different from now. In the book, “The American School, A Global Context, From the Puritans to the Obama Administration” you read about how back then people had it hard to go to school due to many types of segregation. Where people suffer just to get the same education as a white person. And if you walk in the halls in some schools today, you can see much has change. Every day when I’m in class you see how they some doesn’t really care. You see them on there phone and coming late to class when it’s almost time to go, expecting that at the end of the say they deserve an A or B in that class.
Many students in the U.S take education for granted, as did I. Everyone has their valid/unvalidated reasons. Mine was carelessness which is never a credible reason. As I reflect on my life I’m very humbled by the mistakes and realizations that I’ve made. Over the course of my adolescence I was finding out who I was and what my values on education are.
As children we were always told that it's vital that we get good grades in primary school and continue on to college and get high scores there too. This was supposed to lead our adult lives to a better plane and permit us to be happier in our lives. However, few individuals simply aren't cut out for the education that they try to achieve.
In the Story “In Praise of the F word”, Marry Sherry writes about her teaching experiences and flaws of the school system. Kids are not getting the education that they deserve and I agree with her. She said, “People of all ages can rise above their problems, but they need to have a reason to do so.” I feel the same way, students don’t put any effort in their education and they still pass the class. It’s unfair to them and teachers. They need motivation to encourage them to want to learn and pass. The author write about her son, who is failing his English class but isn’t too concern with it until his teacher threatens to fail him. Teachers should follow through failing students so they will try their best and learn. Mary states “Passing students
Levin’s eighth grade class of 1999 made the highest test scores of any of the schools in the Bronx and fifth highest in New York City (Tough 49-50). Attitude adjustment can make a huge difference in youths’ lives. Their grades are up to themselves. If they just want to do the routine day-to-day thing so be it. Adults cannot keep taking responsibility for every action of their child. That is a part of growing up, taking responsibility for yourself. Students are responsible for their grades, studying, and paying attention in class. They should not be paid for that responsibility. There are things in life that people have to do, like cleaning the house for example. As an adult, people do not get paid for cleaning their own house. So should students should not be paid for their own responsibilities either. Kids need to understand the difference between a job and a responsibility. The difference is people get paid for a job, and they don’t get paid for a responsibility. If society starts paying kids to go to school like it is a job they won’t know the true meaning of responsibility. Responsibility cannot be treated as if it is a job or responsibility will cease to exist. Not literally of course, but eventually a good
Another way that I stay motivated is by continually building positive relationships with my peers and instructors. As a result, I see the positive changes in my personal and professional life which makes me want to help others along the way. I will keep realistic, attainable
According to Knowle’s (1988) theory on andragogy, “Adults are motivated to learn as they experience needs and interests that learning will satisfy (p. 139).” I am self-motivated to learn in my courses, because I
I am a very motivated person and always try to go the extra mile because I like the feeling you get at the end of the day. I look back at how much I have done and how far I have reached and become filled with positive energy for the accomplishments I have achieved. Having motivation will drive me to become successful in the things I want to achieve. To keep myself motivated, I like to work ahead, ask questions, and find the right setting to work in.
From the day a child takes their first steps into school, it is ingrained into their mind that they are preparing for high education beyond grade school and high school. Teachers preach over and over how important education is to a student. However, with the price of tuition increasing every year, many consider not obtaining a college degree. Having a college degree in today’s society can allow a person to have more opportunity in the market, earn a better wage, and can create a better outlook on jobs. College degrees are still very important to strive for.
Now, while there are the excellent habits of successful students, there are students that don’t want to put forth effort. External students don’t have the correct mindset and believe they’ll get lucky and be successful, but they’re wrong and consequently, they fail. These students rarely succeed and they blame everyone but themselves, their excuses are, it’s the teacher's fault or they didn’t understand. External students are on the lower end of the spectrum since they don’t take on the responsibility of their grades.Going to school is relevant, therefore, as long as you are organized, take notes, study, ask questions, and follow directions, you will prosper. A person’s effort and the way they view things will determine their achievements in school. If you procrastinate and complain you won’t finish your work, in order to do well you must be positive and try your best. If you become distracted because you are hungry, bring in meager snacks to eat, but if you do, make sure they are healthy, if the snacks are are too unhealthy, then consequently they will make you tired and distract you even
In the work, the author in few instances employs special and interesting circumstances to explain on the student’s poor academic skills. However, she fails to elaborate exactly how learners operating devoid of distraction unsuccessfully grasp academics in some instances. She conversely engages in good techniques that are appealing to the students resulting in extra effort in their school setting. Her other concern is grade inflation in the education system. This has the impact of producing semi-literate students due to the increased unprincipled behaviors in our academic institutions. Mary advocates for a subordinate categorizing system that will realize hard work hence increased performance by the students. The F expression was also applied by the writer to present her argument on social
Motivation can strengthen learning and academic achievement in various ways for students. Students who are motivated are more likely to pay attention in the classroom, comprehend the subject content being introduced, and exhibit the capability to continue to achieve academic proficiency if their first attempts to do so fail. This mindset is utilized to enhance their skills and capabilities in order to meet future challenges without reservations. A student’s approach to future tasks will be determined by the manner in which a student is affected by current tasks and their outcome (Ormrod, 2014).
