All have the affinity for affection. Inherently, it is within us to seek love and spread love. To gain an understanding of someone, it takes time. Patience is a virtue, as one slowly unravels the intricate essence of who they are,they gain an empathetic understanding of how one functions based on their emotions. Love is a journey destined by an effort on both parts; the stability of it 's foundation relies on communication. Bereft of this, a relationship is doomed to a tragic end. In the story Pan by Knut Hamsun, a Lieutenant Glahn of Norway falls in love with a tradesman 's daughter, Edvarda. Glahn is a solitary man, and during his summer visit he camps in the forest with his dog, Aesop. Edvarda, on the other hand, is a social animal and spends much of her summer feeding the cultural customs of the village. As time goes on, the purity of their childish love is soon turned bitter by their inabilities to convey their true feelings. When his relationship with Edvarda fails because he cannot clearly express his love, Glahn kills himself. When Edvarda invites Glahn to a party with her, and she neglects him for the tradition of the event; he 's hurt, and as a result of Glahn 's ineptitude in internalizing and acknowledging his frustration he throws her shoe in the water. Pursuing his infatuation, and upon being invited by Edvarda to a social gathering, Glahn accompanies her.
