Every author has their own personal writing style, the format of their story may conform or deviate from the standard conventions of a genre. I am analyzing the book Held by Edeet Ravel to answer a larger question, which is whether this novel features the common characteristics found in one specific genre. Held is a novel written about a young teenager named Chloe Mills, who is captured during her summer break and held hostage for a prisoner exchange, in the story there is a sense of thrill, conflict and uncertainty as the protagonist tries to break free but instead falls in love with her abductor. Ravel used many elements of suspense in her work, however there are also elements of romance, thus conveying to more than one genre; we know this because there is a balance between romantic and thrilling elements. Authors use suspense thrillers to build tension and interest in the story. The first few pages are mysterious and enthralling then the story unfolds at a fast pace. Stories about love are great sellers; in this book the writer introduces a theme of love and affection as the two main characters form an attachment with one another. Authors use romantic suspense to add a sense of compassion, empathy and romantic thrill. Chloe narrates the entire story as she reflects on her personal life, feelings and emotions; this reason allows this novel to tie with the genre of women’s fiction as well.
