The gods were worshiped in the sacred sites and temples in the major communities by having ceremonies held by priest and their attendants. Temples over time, became massive 'houses' built in honor of a god. The temples are separated from the community by a gate known as a propylon. The purpose of the work is to inform the audience of Greek religion and all that it entitles. In the article Cartwright describes the deities as well as the rituals for worship and celebrations. It also describes how people made a living out of the beliefs such as oracles and mystics. The work is written for anyone interested in learning more about ancient Greece. It has great significance to my topic because it depicts the important aspects of the religion. The strengths are how descriptive it is and how it touches on the most important topics. It's weaknesses are how short each section is.

Worshipping practises were implemented at sacred sites and naoses (meaning dwelling place about the belief that the god welt in that place, or at least temporarily visited during rituals) in major Greek city states had their ceremonies done by priests and their attendants. Initially altars were just simple things but as time passed temples for the gods grew until the most famous of temples was built to house the statue of Athena in the Parthenon. One of the major rituals in the Greek religion was to sacrifice an animal. Sacrifices were important as they showed the relationship between gods, humans, and animals as they should be. The Gods, were on the top and were more significance than the humans and animals. They asked of sacrifices and the humans had to provide it. The humans were as important, but under the gods as they had to follow the requests of the gods. The animals, had not power, and were disposed of whenever a sacrifice. Animals were created to be sacrificed by humans in their worship of their gods. Sheep and goats were the most often sacrificed animals as they were common and easy to kill. Worshipping of the gods was split into three main forms: 1) worship here was mainly done through animal sacrifice, though most of the animal was eaten by the worshippers, so in the end more like a banquet too. it was also mainly done through festivals like the Olympics and All-Athens festival, these started out as an accompaniment to the sacrifices but then progressed into the main event.
Similar to Egyptians, Mesopotamians were polytheists and their gods created the natural phenomena. However, the temple in each city-state mainly worshipped a local god and was the central power in the city. The Mesopotamians ascribed human’s appearance and characteristics to represent their deities. The presence of the cult image in the temple indicated the presence of the deity in the city. Each cult image of the local god was placed in the city’s largest and most sophisticated sanctuary. For instance, the cult image of Marduk–Babylon’s city deity–resided in the Esagila temple. Mesopotamians believed the shrine of the Esagila temple was the heart of the universe. According to the inscriptions in the Steinplatten, the cult statue, the walls and the ceilings of the sanctuary were plated in gold. In practice of the daily ritual, the servants or priests of the temple cleansed and dressed the cult statue in new clothes. Since the priests directly served the patron city god, they were respected by common people. Additionally, the inscriptions from king Neriglissar’s cylinder revealed that he was submissive to the gods and thus the king’s power was shared to the priests and the local government. Local government governed the city and controlled the economy on behalf of the city’s god. Consequently, the cult’s control over the economy and society was limited inside the city-state.

Like the Egyptians, Greek civilization had multiple gods that were immortal and very powerful, but there were twelve major gods that were the most important. Some of these gods and goddesses were Zeus, Hera, Athena, and Apollo to name a few. They were believed to reside on Mt. Olympus. Greek gods were immortal. The people of Greece built temples (much like the pyramids that were in Egypt), and gods were worshipped at these temples. Ceremonial rituals or any other special occasions took place here also. Most of the temples were constructed to honor a god, and they were sacred in their being. They sacrificed animals, held festivals, and sporting events. It is apparent that the Greeks adapted some similar qualities from Egyptian religion, but they are still unique in their own way.
