Although animal experimentation has been around for centuries, the ethical revival of realization on the moral status of animals began in the 1970’s. This problem was a few among many that had been quietly hidden for years until the 1970’s.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” (Mahatma Gandhi). Scientists have been using animals for biomedical research for centuries. They provide a source to get information scientists can not get without harming humans. A lot of debate is spread about whether it is good or bad. Animal experimentation is a controversial topic because it is helpful to humans, but it is also cruel and inhumane.

Animal experimentation is a brutal way to see if products are going to be able to be used on humans. When scientists test products on animals, it causes the helpless them to be in excessive amounts of pain. The animals experience murderous tests like drilling into their skulls, and burning their skin, and eyes. Even though animal experimentation helps to find new diseases and medicines that are safe for humans, scientists should not use animals to experiment on because it doesn't always work ,and the tests are causing unnecessary harm to living animals.

Animals make good research subjects for a variety of reasons. Animals are biologically similar to humans. They are susceptible to many of the same health problems, and they have short life cycles so they can easily be studied throughout their whole life span or across or several generations. The first documented case of animal experimentation was in 1628, meaning that it has been around for almost four-hundred years. Animal experimentation is a disgusting form of torturing poor, helpless creatures, just for science. Over one-hundred million animals are killed every year due to animal experimentation. Although animal experimentation has been around for a very long time, it is time to make a better future for these poor creatures. Animals should not be used for any type of experimentation. It affects the creature mentally, physically, and internally. Also the alternatives for animal experimentation are endless, and many animals die unjustified.

Experimentation is a vital aspect of all sciences, as it validates hypothesis and furthers scientific development. The goal is to minimize and ultimately replacing animal experimentations with non-animal methods. There are many debates about whether or not animals such as mice and rats should be experimented on. The organization Psychologist for the Ethical Treatment of Animals believes in observing animals instead of experimenting on them (Meyer). Another known organization is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). An organization that is in favor of animal experimentation is called Pro-Test and is located in the United Kingdom (UK). This organization thinks that experimenting on animals may help humans. About 95% of animals are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act like reptiles, birds and mice (“Animal Testing”). Experimentation on animals should not be permitted in any country, including the United States, because it is cruel and inhumane, because we have developed new technology that can replace these experiments, and because sometimes the results that are found are not directly relevant to humans.
