Animal Experiments Or Torture?

Animals endure so much pain and suffering when being tested on. In some cases, animal testing can be deadly or lead to serious side effects that will forever stick with the animal that was tested on. Animals hardly ever, to never benefit from testing. In research and testing, animals are subjected to experiments that can include everything from testing new drugs to infecting with diseases, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skin, causing brain damage, implanting electrodes into the brain, maiming, blinding, and other painful and invasive procedures (NEAVS). It can include protocols that cause severe suffering. Also, can’t forget about the restricted living conditions where animals are forced to live in an unhealthy habitat out of their own element during the testing period. Animals in labs suffer not only pain from protocols, but also severe stress from day-to-day laboratory life. They spend their lives in barren cages, unable to make choices or express natural behaviors. Most never experience fresh air or sunshine, only bars and concrete. Although most think that the Animal Welfare Act protects animals from abuse, it is a common misconception that the AWA protects animals against abuse and harm in the laboratory or in other areas of commerce. It is not ethical to harm any animal and one must not go against his or her morals. Scientists are often blinded by the negative effects against the animals. They are slit opened, poisoned, and tortured. Imagine being contained in an insufficient amount of area, chances are, you may often experience impaired brain development or anxious behaviors. Pre-experimentation conditions is not where it ends, animals experience harmful scenarios that occur in a laboratory. Often, animals are injected with conditions that a healthy animal may not be familiar with. Species of all kinds experience psychological reactions from drugs that are provided to them. Over the many, not just one, but many laboratories, monkeys are addicted to drugs, cats consist of holes drilled into their skulls, rats have their spinal cords crushed, and many indescribable conditions are forced into animals. It has been identified that an estimated 26 million animals are used every year in just only the U.S for research. A lot of human success is due to vivisection, otherwise known as animal experimentation. Some experiments involve infecting animals with a deadly disease, poisoning them for testing toxicity levels, and subjecting them to other painful, and even life threatening experiments. There are new alternatives ways of testing without involving the lives of helpless animals, it is no longer necessary to test with these creatures. They do not provide scientists with completely accurate information. Although it is now deemed as cruel, in the past, animal testing was responsible for many cures.

According to Humane Society International, “Animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and ‘killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means.’” As you can see theses animals are being treated cruelly and inhumane, just reading that paragraph makes shivers run down my spine. Even though we don't think of animals as humans because they are not, does not mean that they can not suffer like a human. Researchers test substances that “clearly are hazardous,” on animals because it would be immoral to test them on humans (Bittman). While using animals for research provides “modern medicine,” the animals do feel pain and experience fear very similarly to humans (Hanlon). Although, unlike humans they cannot give their consent for the experiments. Instead, the researchers can force any test on the animals, who have no other option than to suffer. Experimenters can legally perform any study, regardless of how it affects the animals involved.

Most of the animals use in research are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. Those animals like birds and mice are not protected because for the federal law, these animals are not in the animal category. The worst part of this is that those animals that are not protected are the ones most often used for testing. This animals are tortured in many ways and law does not do anything to protect them. In fact, even the animals that are protected by the AWA are harmed. They are exposed to a lot of harmful procedures. It have been cases were the same animals harm their selves due to all the stress they have to pass by. Imagine how much stress one need to be to be able to cause pain to itself.

Experimenting on animals need to be regarded as unacceptable by means of many due to the fact that it causes needless suffering to animals, the benefits of these experiments are yet to be proven, and any advantages humans do attain can be produced in different approaches than experimentation. We should not be able to manipulate them and hurt them forcing them to live with injuries or illnesses we inflicted without them being able to fight back. They suffer everyday being held in small cages with no freedom until they find their untimely end most likely being euthanized. Believe it or not, many of the animals that are used for biomedical research and other forms of testing aren’t even protected. Meaning that many of the animals that are subjected to testing, the Animal Welfare Act does not protect them from such harm. These animals include; mice, birds, fish, and reptiles. Animal Experimentation leads to death/illnesses/mental illnesses. Animals suffer everyday from undergoing purposeful injuries and deadly surgeries that when happening don’t even get a pain killer or antibiotic to calm or numb the pain. Have you ever pondered the idea of living your life without the ability to control even the most basic things? Being put into a small, dark, cold cage without having the chance to break free. Being forced to live in some unknown place, forced to either eat or starve and without any form of control of even the smallest needs. Why should animals be treated any differently than Humans? Throughout the history of Biomedical research, animals are used as test subjects to study and understand biological processes of humans, leading to revolutionary discoveries that improves quality of life and alleviate human suffering. However, most of the experimental conditions can be hash, inconsiderate and unethical. Animals have an equal right to mother earth and freedom; therefore, it is important to protect them and make sure they are treated in a nonviolent manner under the same ethical code used for humans.

This means animals suffer through inhuman and cruel pain, animals do not reliably predict results in human beings, and it’s more expensive than alternative methods. Also the animal welfare act has not succeeded in preventing horrific cases.
