It is not often that one sees the gruesome ways of animal experimentation in person. In short, it is the use of non-human animals in labs to find variables that affect the behavior of the human biological system (Google). Many people-like the PETA organization or the Humane Society-oppose these practices, but even this opposition is not enough to stop testing from happening for things such as cosmetics testing, chimpanzee experimentation, and genetically engineered farm animals. Although some of the testing produces positive results-such as a drug working-it is at the expense of millions of tortured animals; therefore, a simple solution would be to prohibit the use of animals in research. First and foremost, animals are not given an option in the testing. As Alice Walker said, “The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans anymore than black people were made for white, or women created for men.” In all the instances that Walker mentioned, people can argue that they did not have a choice in what happened to them. Black Africans were sold into slavery and punished for disobeying while women were ridiculed by society for not obeying men. Those instances has long passed and now women and blacks are treated with respect from most people. However, animal testing has not passed and they are still being disrespected. They feel, think, behave, and experience pain-just like humans. So why treat them like they are any less? Unlike some humans who willingly sacrifice themselves for the advancement of technology and human welfare, animals cannot voice their decision. Ergo, testing must be discontinued because it violates the rights of animals. Furthermore, the suffering that animals go through do not produce any results of uses to humans. A YouTube video on testing goes to show the behind the scenes work
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgXsoKMSH3E). The UK Animal Lab researcher declares, “That’s you done, you can go in our bin.” From 2014, the Animalist YouTube channel has found that a total of 92 puppies and no less than fifteen kittens “have been tested, killed, and cut up for research purposes” (Animalistic channel, YouTube). The lack of remorse in some scientists is shocking.
Although animal experimentation has been around for centuries, the ethical revival of realization on the moral status of animals began in the 1970’s. This problem was a few among many that had been quietly hidden for years until the 1970’s.
Millions of animals suffer due to effects of testing they must endure. This testing is usually done unethically and causes major harm. It’s wrong to harm animals for the sake of testing products for society. Furthermore, animals are living creatures just like humans and should not be treated differently. While testing animals may be cheaper, it is morally wrong and causes many harmful side effects in animals.
At this moment, tens of millions of animals, such as rats, rabbits, monkeys, cats, and dogs, plus more, are being locked inside cages in labs all throughout the country due to being used in horrific experiments. These animal experiments are used to develop and enhance new drugs and to test the safety of products before being used on humans. Many of these experiments inflict pain to the animals and decrease their satisfactory of life. More than a hundred million animals suffer and die every year in the U.S. from medical education and clinical experiments, as well as merciless chemical, drug, food, and cosmetic tests. Animals also suffer and die in classroom biology experiments and dissection.
How could one not feel guilty when looking into a test animal’s eyes and seeing all of the pain and suffering that they have endured? Over 75-100 million animals are used for scientific and medical research per year. (Baumans) Animals should not be used for scientific and medical research because it is unethical, humans and animals are not genetically identical resulting in failed tests, and there are other techniques to conduct research.
Have you ever wondered why animals are used in experimentation? Each year over 100 million are killed due to experiments for biology lessons, medical training, chemical, drug, food, cosmetic testing, and curiosity driven experimentation. The better question is why? Why use animal when there are many alternatives. Animals may not be able to speak up for themselves but humans have a voice for them. Many people have participated in protest, taken surveys, and created organizations to protect animals from the cruelty.
It is unethical to use the cruel methods of animal experimentation for our own benefit alone. The animals used in research range from birds, dogs, cats, and pigs to name a few. So many innocent creatures put up with the immense pain so that science experiments can be made and new products can be put on the shelves. Many of the animals used in the testing and experiments are blind,
Imagine walking into a cosmetic or medical research laboratory and seeing thousands of animals locked up in cages, deformed, injured, even dead. In 2010 a total of 26 million animals in the US were tested on (thehastingscenter.org). Animals have the closest genetics to humans than anything else yet animal testing is a cruel and inhumane job and not all animals have similar organ functions to humans. Animals should not be used for scientific or commercial testing.
When visiting an animal shelter, petting the beloved family dog, or seeing a funny cat video on Facebook, it’s hard not to melt at the sight. Who could ever harm such cute, innocent creatures? It may be hard to think of how that could be possible, yet many companies have no problem hurting animals for their own benefit. Medication brands spanning the U.S., China, Germany, Canada and more test their products on animals daily to approve them for human use. Cruelty Free International and the Dr. Hadwen Trust states that at least 115 million animals may be used in experiments worldwide each year. The experiments administered to the poor animals are cruel and unethical, ranging from breeding them with the purpose of inducing mental illnesses or skinning them raw and injecting them with electrodes and chemicals. Furthermore, research has proved that the results are so unreliable and faulty that the testing is not even necessary. Evidence has proven that animals are subjected to unimaginable horrors during animal testing for the purpose of advancing the modern medical world, yet the entire operation is unnecessary for several reasons.
A research was done and the results were, “ The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported in 2010 that 97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief, including 1,395 primates, 5,996 rabbits, 33,652 guinea pigs, and 48,015 hamsters.” (animal-testing) Animals get no say in what’s being done to them. The scientists can only observe results not ask questions so all animals being tested on are either being tortured or killed. A creatures life is being ruined and wasted just to improve the appearance of another. These animals could be loved in homes as pets or who knows maybe in the wild living their lives in a natural habitat but instead they are being force fed or water deprived or getting their fur disintegrated by harsh chemicals. Just because the animals can’t say stop or express in words
“An estimated 26 million animals are used every year in the united states for scientific and commercial testing” (ProCon.org). We are rapidly using up the earth’s supply of small animals. “A 2011 poll of nearly 1,000 biomedical scientists conducted by the science journal Nature found that more than 90% agreed that the use of animals in research is essential (ProCon.org). Right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked up in cages and are getting killed for scientific tests to create products and medicines. Thus, animal testing is cruel and inhumane to be experimenting on animals, there are alternative methods available to researchers to replace animal testing, and that animals are so different from human beings that research on animals often yields irrelevant results.
Despite controversy over animal testing, according to statistics conducted by the Foundation for Biomedical Research, roughly 95% of all lab animals are some strain of mouse or rat. () Scientific researchers rely on mice and rats for several reasons, one being convenience. Rodents are small, easily housed and maintained, and adapt well to new surroundings. They also reproduce quickly and have a short lifespan of two to three years, allowing several generations to be observed in a relatively short period of time. Another reason laboratories use rats is in order to obtain genetic purity and consistency; rodents raised for animal testing can be bred so that they are almost genetically identical to prevent any bias in experimental results (Iannaccone & Jacob, 2009). What makes rats most
By Laura Blue, a significant point is mentioned, “We often hear you can't give aspirin to cats because it's toxic to them, or you shouldn't give chocolate to dogs. Chocolate, which is very safe in humans, is not safe in dogs.” Animals are not the best method to test chemical products on, because their biological makeup differs from ours, like I stated earlier. All of the side effects of animal testing are negative to them, and include conditions such as Illness, skin irritation, pain, genetic mutation, and almost always result in death. The animals come from many places such as zoos, compounds, and breeders. Although the animals may be suffering physically from the pain and torture, they are also suffering by being taken away from their home environment and family’s. It has also been scientifically proven that animals feel pain and emotion cognitively as
Therefore, animals should not be used for animal research. Animals suffer emotionally experimenters waste their lives when they do nothing and they do not even improve human health. Society should get rid of animal testings because people are basically murdering these animals. They did nothing to anyone, but yet they kill them for no reason. Researchers waste their money and time on “finding cures” but yet they are killing others’ lives while they are at it. Society must figure out another way to research medical testings on
The use of animal testing to conduct research on medical and pharmaceutical products is a divisive and controversial subject. The main arguments against animal testing are the inhume conditions in which animals are kept, and the suffering inflicted upon test subjects (Van der Zee; July 18, 2013). Despite the ethical issues with animal testing, an equally compelling argument can be made about the need for this practice to minimize risks to human test subjects. Throughout the years, animal research has been essential to the development of ground breaking medical discoveries such as penicillin even if such discoveries came at the expense of millions of animals that may have suffered or died during or because of these experiments (Lobanovska & Pilla, 2017). This paper intends to establish that despite its drawbacks, animal testing is a necessary evil for the sake of scientific progress.
According to the Laboratory Animal Resource Center, “more than 100 million animals are killed in experiments each year in the United States” (qtd. in Technology). Animal experimentation is a scientific process that tests chemical substances on animal subjects versus human subjects to see how they react with the different body systems. This process has been used all over the world, but today, it is used in very few places around the world. Animal experimentation can be used for cosmetic research to see how makeup products, soaps, or moisturizers will react on the skin. This process can also be used for medical research to find cures or vaccines for various diseases. Animal experimentation is made to sound like a good thing, but in
