On 06/03/17, at 12:20pm, I Deputy Warden N. Christian was dispatched to Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) 3015 Scioto Darby Executive Court on dogs being held, no known owner. I arrived at the location spoke to CAHS employees who stated that the will be releasing two dogs to me. A black/white Dachshund and a brown/white medium mix breed. I had a CAHS employee complete an animal release form. I placed both dogs in my vehicle. I was previously advised that the Dachshund had a microchip number ( 0A10361570). I had Franklin County Animal Care and Control (FCACC) Dispatcher C. Grim to contact the microchip company to confirm information provided to me by CAHS employees. FCACC Dispatcher C. Have you ever been watching tv and the ASPCA commercial comes on, you know the one that has the song “Arms of an Angle.” The commercial makes you feel super sad for the poor animals that have been abused and victimized because of cruel behavior. They ask you to donate money to help these animals recover. What if when these animals do recover they were turned into Service animals. This is a matter of great concern in our community because we could help get most, if not all the animals adopted into a loving home. In order to understand the issue more completely, I looked at turning shelter animals into service animals. Many animals are rescued and taken to shelters all around the United States. These shelters provide all the resources and take care of the animals until they are well or adopted. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, is a non-profitable organization that is dedicated to preventing animal cruelty. You should donate money to the ASPCA or even adopt a pet if able to because it provides money to the animals to give them the necessities they need, it supports the animals that have been poorly treated, and it helps get animals out of poor

Although their mission statement is addressed to the welfare of all animals, this organization shelters and provides care for dogs and cats only. The shelter does not accept stray animals, but rather focuses on giving suggestions and alternatives to people who are thinking about releasing their pets to shelters, such as providing veterinary care or animal behavior classes. If people do not wish to do this, then they can release their ownership of their pets to the shelter, and the organization will provide the dog or cat with food, water, housing, and veterinary needs. Animals who enter into the organization’s care will receive housetraining and the social skills necessary in order for them to be adopted into a home. The organization claims that there is an unlimited amount of space in their shelters, and in 2014, 6,995 dogs and cats were adopted with an adoption rate of 90%. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was the first humane society to be established in North America and is, today, one of the largest in the world. The organization was founded on the belief that animals are entitled to kind and respectful treatment at the hands of humans and must be protected under the law. The ASPCA is a privately funded 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, and has more than 2 million supporters across the country. It started in New York City and maintains a strong local presence, and now has programs that extend their anti-cruelty mission across the country.

The North Shore Animal League will first discuss animal rights and how animal abuse and homelessness is at an all-time high today among animals. There will also be various pictures and statistics shown to offer the audience insight on which dog and cat breeds are the most abused and homeless. For example, due to their small size and temperament with people Chihuahuas are among one of the most abused and homeless dog breeds. The organization will then discuss their plan to remedy the issue of animal abuse and homelessness by opening up animal shelters in urban areas in Staten Island and Brooklyn to lower animal abuse and homelessness. These shelters will provide the animal’s food, water, and medicine, which are the main necessities for them to survive. By opening these new shelters, it will ensure the animal’s safety and well-being until people are ready to adopt and bring them home.

Kill shelters and animal abuse are a big problem in society. Animals are equal to people and they should be treated just the same. Animals do not deserve to be treated harshly and they also do not deserve to live in horrible conditions. I believe that animals have as much of a right as humans do, to be free of labor.

When most people think about Animal Control shelters, it usually negative. Animal control shelters get an unjust reputation of just being a place where unwanted, problem dogs go to be euthanized. I mean, you call the your local animal control office when you see a stray dog hanging around the neighborhood, right? They show up in a van or truck driven by a uniformed officer who carries a scary looking pole with a loop on it to catch animals. Well, there’s more to your local animal control shelter than just catching stray dogs and cats.

In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local community at The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.

Thesis: The American Welfare Institute is an organization that helps fight against the mistreatment of animals. They have supported and fought for many laws to be passed and have filed court cases against people mistreating animals. This organization also helps raise money for shelters and wildlife organizations.

Imagine being a staff member or a volunteer at an animal shelter. Imagine watching day in and day out as animals passed through your doors, the unmistakeable scent of desolation and grief filling the room like a tidal wave. Imagine standing in front of the donation jar, counting the measly offerings, and hoping they added up to at least five dollars. Ravalli County should do more to encourage adoption of impounded animals, and supply more resources for, the Bitterroot Humane Association. The BItterroot Humane Association is our local “pound” that takes in lost, abandoned, abused, or unwanted companions. They provide pet owners with an outlet should they ever not be able to take care of their animals. Then, these pets are placed back into loving homes, making everyone happy. With a limited budget, they have to care for many, many animals. The Bitterroot Humane Association does not give animals a “time limit” for being put down. Some shelters in Missoula, for example, euthanize their residents if they do not find homes soon enough. Many animals at the kill shelters are very loving and sweet, and deserve a little more time to adjust. At no kill shelters, such as the Bitterroot Humane Association, they are not put down. Countless lives locked away in cages and forgotten about have overwhelmed our society, it has left blood stains on our history as a species and if history has taught us anything, it’s that we have a choice to change our ways of adjusting to situations. A war which was fought in pursuit of ending such criminal means, yet we as human beings do little to nothing to end the horrific crimes of animal deaths in shelters. It is no secret that this world has become infused with problems that have extended from one side of the globe to the other. Well, luckily, there are shelters in different places that help animals that aren’t able to take care of themselves. Did you know that every year 3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats enter animal shelters in U.S.? If you think that figure was huge, now imagine around 1.5 million of them are being euthanized every year because the shelter doesn’t have enough money or volunteers (ASPCA) to take care of them. However, this number can be significantly reduced if we start to make a change. With my speech, I would like to persuade you to from now on look for pets in a shelter instead of a pet store. In order to do this, I will provide information about the differences between shelters and pet stores, reasons to adopt a pet, and how to do it.

Animals that enter shelters are either lost pets that don’t have ID tags or microchips or stray and feral animals who have never known the love of a human.
