Abstract
It is cruel for animals to continue to be tortured when it is unnecessary. It has been proven that the tests performed on animals have different effects on humans. Companies are using animals to test the safety of their products using old methods that were created back in the early 1900s. There has been enough scientific advancement for these companies to use other methods using 21st century technology. Unfortunately, there are not enough laws or regulations in the U.S. to protect the safety of all animals. The penalties for companies who violate current laws on animal cruelty do not outweigh the economic benefits companies reap from their research. The U.S. should outlaw all animal testing by passing the Humane Cosmetics Act

The FDA 's stance on animal testing falls closely to the middle. Companies are neither discouraged or encouraged to test on animals. However, the FDA has stated they would like the maximum amount of information using the fewest animals as humanely as possible. There are several factors to consider when testing cosmetics. Companies need to know if their products will cause an allergic reaction, eye damage, infertility, birth defects, or toxicity when absorbed through the skin, lungs, or digestive tract. They also need to observe the effects of long-term exposure and whether they 're carcinogenic. Companies opt out of testing on humans because it 's inhumane and if something goes wrong, it might severely harm a human being and cause permanent damage. Therefore, companies test on animals, such as mice, rats, guinea pigs or bunnies. Some people consider this inhumane, while others accept it as a part of science. For example, Europe has banned products that have been tested on animals entirely. On the other hand, China actually requires animal testing on finished products.
Animal Cruelty
All animals have the capacity to feel physical pain and mental distress during testing. Yet, animal cruelty in lab testing is prolific and widespread. Animals are subject to physical, as well as psychological torment everyday of their lives. They are frequently mutilated, restrained, and cut open without any painkillers. Common and legal tests include poisoning, starving,
Just think about your pet, your cute dog that receives you with so many happiness, that little bunny that jumps all over your room, I think you love it, no? well now think that animal that you love, stuck in a cage suffering with needles all over its body, crying for help but is an animal, who cares?, right?......... Stop.
Animal testing is cruel and inhumane. According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and "killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means." [47] The Draize eye test, used by cosmetics companies to evaluate irritation caused by shampoos and other products, involves rabbits being incapacitated in stocks with their eyelids held open by clips, sometimes for multiple days, so they cannot blink away the products being tested. [48][49] The commonly used LD50 (lethal dose 50) test involves finding out which dose of a chemical will kill 50% of the animals being used in the experiment. [65][102] The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported in 2016 that 71,370 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief, including 1,272 nonhuman primates, 5,771 rabbits, 24,566 guinea pigs, and 33,280 hamsters. [121]
Jeremy Bentham once said, “The question is not, ‘Can they reason?’ nor, ‘Can they talk?’ but ‘Can they suffer?’” Animal testing is becoming a conflict right now and I believe that Animal testing should be stopped because it is cruel and inhuman, Alternative testing technologies exist, the lack of reliability, and it is expensive. Another quote once said was by Martin Luther King Jr stating “Never, never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake” That quote is saying why do wrong when right can be done, especially when people and animals are involved. Animals have feelings and enjoy life as much as humans do so keeping them in captivity and testing drugs on them is cruel and inhuman.
Animals lose their lives in a horrible way so that we can have useless things like makeup. A lot more brands use animals testing then society would think. By law before releasing a new medication it has to be tested many times on different animals first. One reason animal testing is horrible because it hurts them for not good reasons when there is more efficient ways to test products. (“Animal testing is a bad science”)
Many animals die each year from animal cruelty. Caring for some animals can be very expensive ,abusing animals is a felony and against the law. Animal abuse or animal cruelty is unintentional animal neglect and the intentional infliction by humans of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, regardless of whether the act is against the law. Using animals for testing is against the law,and not right.
For my paper I chose the topic of animal testing because I have always been very passionate for animals and against animal abuse. I have never believed in animal testing and that there were always other alternatives. I wanted to look further into and educate myself about what is being done about this and why it is an ethical issue. I have come up with an axiom to summarize this topic. Testing animals in research revolves around the relative or moral value of humans and animals, and many different viewpoints helped to contribute to the development of ethical principles of animal treatment.
Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary. Many believe that the use of animal testing for products such as medicines and cosmetics is cruel and unnecessary. with advancements in modern technology there is absolutely no need for animal testing
Every year in the United States of America more than 100 million helpless animals will suffer and die from malicious chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests. Rabbits, Cats, birds, reptiles and amphibians are not covered by the minimal protections of the Animal Welfare Act, so they go unnoticed towards the millions of sufferers. Millions of rodents, birds, rabbits, primates, felines, canines, and other types of animals are locked inside barren cages in laboratories across the country. People have diverse opinions on animal testing and its morality. Morality refers to the standards of right and wrong shared in the society. We can define it as “human rights.” Ten moral traditions that all serious people accept are:
Much progress has been made to end this testing, gearing the world into the right direction of animal testing free procedures, though, not everyone is on board. The United States have yet to hop onto the train toward a free animal testing future. The United States continues to test on animals for cosmetics even though there are numerous ways to test, without using animals, that are more efficient and effective than animal testing. (3D tissue samples of corneas made from human cells can be used instead of using an animal organ when testing for cosmetics side effects.) What is worse than the United States still testing on animals, is that there is continued demand for even more animal
Every year, millions of animals are killed or poisoned, and put through extreme cruelty and suffering just so that inhuman and outdated tests can attempt to evaluate the hazards of consumer products and the ingredients included in them. In an experiment to measure poisonous effects many animals, such as mice, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, and many more, are forced to inhale or swallow large quantities of a test substance or have some type of chemical smeared onto their skin or into their eyelids (“8 Million Signatures Needed in Fight Against Animal Testing”). As stated before, it is now known that only a small percentage of tests result in good outcomes, so why are the animals put through the torture or suffering that the laboratories put them
As many of us know MAC is one of the most popular makeup brands used today. For so many years MAC has been a cruelty free company but that did not last long. MAC started testing on animals and everyone including celebrity Pamela Anderson was upset. Animal cruelty really effects the animals being tested. These animals can die during the experiment do to the chemicals they use. It performs test that are not necessary reason being, the makeup sometimes does not even launch. Also, it cost a lot of money just to have these animals in the laboratory. With this being said, they should not use animals for experiments to harm them or think that it is okay to let them go on with their lives after the harm.
Animal Testing… If you’re unfamiliar with this practice, it’s when scientists use animals for scientific or commercial testing, which involves harmful experiments on the specimen by force feeding it, depriving it of food and water, inflicting painful wounds to study its healing process, and much more. These animals do not deserve to live through such cruelty and pain so scientists can figure out what happens if you inject lethal doses into innocent animals. Experiments like LD50 involve finding out what kinds of chemicals will kill animals and according to scientist records, fifty percent of these animals that were experimented on by scientists died. Fifty percent. That’s not even where the cruelty ends.
Many cosmetic companies recently have came out by saying they have banned animal testing on their products and are now cruelty free, some of those brands are Kat Von D, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Nyx, and Dose of Colors just to name a few out of the 101 that are cruelty free. Animal testing on cosmetics in the US is not something that is mandatory, in China however, they do require all cosmetics are tested on animals first. Some companies based within the US send their products to be tested on animals there rather than here in the US. Most cosmetics are tested on smaller animals such as rice, mice, rabbits, and guinea pigs. The tests often performed according to The Humane Society are, “skin and eye irritations, eating of products to see if there’s the potential for cancer or other defects, and testing the dosage to see how much would cause death.” All of these tests are performed against their will and without any pain relief. The truth is, companies that sell cosmetics and beauty do not need to test on animals at all, there are already safe alternatives that do not harm any animals or humans, such as using ingredients in their products that have a long history of being safe for human use, by using these ingredients no animal testing needs to take place before selling them to humans. Most companies stick to using animal testing as a way to test out new products they have
Animal testing is a completely unnecessary act of cruelty and should not be allowed for various reasons. It is superfluous for innocent animals to undergo chemical testing of any sort, not only do they suffer, but there are other more humane alternatives to test products. Many people who are in favor of animal testing do not know of these safer more humane alternatives. Many methods have been developed to help stop animal testing, and improve the health system of all human beings.
Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.
