Most people are aware that animals are used for testing on many different products such as food, drugs, and cosmetics. Animals are used for testing on these different products before they are released to humans to ensure it’s safe for human use, the reason animals are used such as rats and chimps is because they share about 99% of the same DNA as us humans. Many medical breakthroughs have happened because of the use of animal testing, according to the California Biomedical Research Association, “nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals.” Without testing on animals humans would be much more likely to get certain cancers or diseases from products. Despite the positive sides …show more content…
Many cosmetic companies recently have came out by saying they have banned animal testing on their products and are now cruelty free, some of those brands are Kat Von D, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Nyx, and Dose of Colors just to name a few out of the 101 that are cruelty free. Animal testing on cosmetics in the US is not something that is mandatory, in China however, they do require all cosmetics are tested on animals first. Some companies based within the US send their products to be tested on animals there rather than here in the US. Most cosmetics are tested on smaller animals such as rice, mice, rabbits, and guinea pigs. The tests often performed according to The Humane Society are, “skin and eye irritations, eating of products to see if there’s the potential for cancer or other defects, and testing the dosage to see how much would cause death.” All of these tests are performed against their will and without any pain relief. The truth is, companies that sell cosmetics and beauty do not need to test on animals at all, there are already safe alternatives that do not harm any animals or humans, such as using ingredients in their products that have a long history of being safe for human use, by using these ingredients no animal testing needs to take place before selling them to humans. Most companies stick to using animal testing as a way to test out new products they have
Animal testing has contributed to making many vaccines, and saving thousands of lives. Experiments in which dogs had their pancreases removed led directly to the discovery of insulin, critical to saving the lives of diabetics. The polio vaccine, tested on animals, reduced the global occurrence of the disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 223 cases in 2012. (ProCon.org, 2013) Also Animal testing has contributed to major advances for treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, cystic fibrosis, malaria, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, and many other diseases. Also there are no known alternatives for testing on animals because animals are 99% genetically the same as humans. (OpposingViewpoints.com, 2013) Another example of how Animal Testing has helped humans tremendously is that animals had helped create the inhaler, which kills around 2,000 people each year in the UK. (understandinganimalresearch.org.uk, 2013) Lastly, one other reason that Animal Testing is needed, sharks rarely get cancer, cockroaches can regenerate damaged nerves, and some amphibians can regrow lost limbs. By studying these animals people may learn how their body does all of this and apply it to human medicine. (amprogress.org, 2013) Animal Testing has saved many lives, and if it is not banned it will continue to save
Over one million animals are burned, immobilized, poisoned, and tortured in US labs every year (DoSomething.org). Animal testing is considered a very controversial topic that evolves to protesting rather large companies, and also leads to boycotting a specific brand that is known to test on animals. Animals should not be used for testing products because it is cruel to the animals, there are now new ways to test products, and animals are very different from humans so they are not accurate results.
Hundreds of lives and millions of dollars have been wasted on research regarding human prisoners. The information gathered usually can’t be used because it is not reliable, and the tests done did not follow rules that were already in place. When scientists begin to take advantage of prisoners or abuse their rights, their tests become irrelevant. Since prisoners have little to no rights, scientists use them to their own advantage. Many doctors, before the Nuremberg Code and the Hippocratic oath were enforced, made advancements in medicine by these malicious acts. These people were hurt and tortured due to the things that happened before laws were put in place and enforced. Many other problems arose from testing on prisoners and some even continue to affect how studies regarding prisoners are done today.
Would you want to be tortured and remain miserable all so somebody could test on you? Animal testing is continuing to be a major issue happening all around us. We need to raise awareness for these animals. To the animals we are their only hope. This ongoing issue is a topic we need to become more informed about, as its very important.
For my senior paper I intend on writing about the effects animal testing has on the animals themselves and the reasons behind it being illegal. Animal testing is the use of living animals for experiments and/or to perform tests testing the safety of a human product. My thesis will be along the lines of “Inhumanly treating animals with unnecessary tests for the use of human products that often lack validity, due to the different ways animals and humans react to certain chemicals and supplements, should be outlawed.” I will talk about the types of testing, the products scientist use and whether or not it is an accurate way of determining if the items used are safe for human use.
As society grows with age, it strives to advance in all areas of life. With the turn of the century, a major advancement in all aspects of science, including medicine, is to use laboratory animals to test potentially dangerous substances and research if the substances would be compatible with humans. Many people have issues with animal testing as they believe it is inhumane to use animals to put them in potentially dangerous situations. However, much progress has been made using animal research. The information gained from animal research has paved the road to everything from hair restoration to cancer treatments. Animal research has progressed humanity into new levels it could only dream of and should remain an essential practice.
You wake up in the morning and take a shower. Scrubbing your hair with TREsemme shampoo completely unaware that an innocent rabbit is having that soap dropped into its eyes to ratify if it’s okay for human use. You get out of the shower, brush your teeth with Aquafresh, not thinking about the mouse that had the substance force fed down its throat. Then you start by dabbing on drops of covergirl foundation, Maybelline mascara, and L’Oreal blush. Heedless of the 100 million helpless animals killed a year from experiments and procedures for cosmetic products. There should be an end to the testing and experimentation on animals.
Although many view using animals in medical experiments in a negative light, testing is necessary to develop new medications and to advance medical research. Testing has brought many advancements in the medical field, including lifesaving procedures and treatments for diseases. Also, as a result it brought forth ethical laws of animal test subjects and development of veterinarian medicine.
Each year there are millions of animals abused in laboratory settings to the humans advantage to test the toxicity of chemicals. It has been proven that even though we put these animals through immense amount of pain and cause them to live short and tragic lives, these are not real life situations. The testing we do on these animals will never be able to benefit us because we cannot base their reactions on humans reactions to the toxins in the chemicals. Animal testing is not beneficial to us humans or the animals because we are putting them through pain they do not deserve for information we do not need.
Animals are used by scientists to develop research for new medications and experiments daily. The Humane Society is working to decrease the use of animals in laboratories by promoting the advancement of affective alternative approaches. Animal testing provides a useful model for treatments of diseases and possible cures. According to the US-based foundation of Biomedical Research, animal testing has made a major advance within the last century- for veterinary health and humans. The practice of using animals for testing has been debated for many decades. Is it morally right or wrong to use animals during experiments? Does federal law ensure that animals used in research are treated humanely? When considering the benefits of animal testing,
Perhaps one of the most controversial topics in the field of health sciences is the use non-human test subjects by medical research institutions. Animals used for experimentation can provide extremely important information due to their physical and genetic similarities to humans. The tradeoff to furthering the field of medical science is that often times these experiments result in pain, suffering, and death of the test subjects.
Animal experimentation has become a common practice among scientists around the world for various purposes, specifically including the improvement of human lives. With this in mind, to what lengths are we willing to go far enough to realize that animal experimentation is costing us our own humanity and compassion to the world around us? In the United States alone, there are over 100 million animals that are burned, crippled, or killed during in vivo studies in laboratories. In vivo is latin for “Taking place inside a living organism”. The studies inside living animals include various forms of animal experimentation that not only could be deadly but gruesome. Animal experimentation has gotten out of hand, and it
At many other labs the owners of them require its scientist to have to kind of animal care certification (Wade). At many labs they have a class that the scientist can take so that they are qualified to work at their lab (Wade). Most labs will also have animal care professionals on their site to take care of the animals. But sometimes, the caretakers aren’t caring for the animals, and they end up suffering from even more pain (Wade).
Animal testing is considered to be a cruel act of mankind for their own benefit. One might think that we should find another way to replace animal testing as it is harming animals every day, but the harsh reality is that they are a necessary part of ensuring the health and safety of all organisms in the long run. The reality is that despite some scientists not being in favour of animal testing, they have to use due to the lack of alternatives available to them. All drugs are regulated by the FDA and therefore must be tested before released for public consumption, meaning that animal testing is regulated and somewhat encouraged by the law. As it is a cheap, easy and fast way to place your drug out for sale that may be beneficial to humans
Animal testing, although a controversial topic, affects a great deal of scientists and the work force in the agriculture field. This topic has proven difficult to communicate to one another about because there are individuals that believe animals should have certain rights and others believe that animals have no rights. Our group wanted to research this topic because we want to gain knowledge and become more understanding toward the people on both sides of the spectrum. Digging more into the research we found that cosmetics, medical use, and food are the most widely used methods for experimentation. With these research fields, people are finding ways to appeal to the ethics of the modern-day consumer.
