By having the opportunity to participate in R.E.A.P (Research, Engineering, Apprenticeship, Program) this summer at Fayetteville State University, I will have the chance to brighten my horizon and develop my S.T.E.M skills in a way that I do not have the opportunity to do in school. Many research opportunities offered at a university during the summer are often exclusive to undergrads in college. R.E.A.P would provide me with the opportunity to do scientific research, under a mentor, while I am still in high school. This is something that not many students have the chance to partake in, and since I have the opportunity to do so I would love to take advantage of it. I will be able to have exposure to research and lab work at a college under …show more content…
Courses in school move at an extremely fast pace. This can be both a positive and negative. It is a positive thing because once I have a good grasp on what I am being taught and can accurately comprehend the different concepts I am later tested on them and we move on to the next topic. On the other hand this can be a negative thing because we are not provided with an extremely in depth lesson on what we are learning. With such limited time to teach every topic for a particular subject to a class teachers may not have the opportunity give real world examples about how a particular topic may be used or seen or just dissecting a topic and fully exampling every aspect about it. This lack of depth then leads to having to research a topic independently to gain more information on it. Don’t get me wrong, I have no issue using my free time to learn more about a certain topic independently. Independent learning is something that I feel is extremely important. When I take the initiative to research things on my own and stem off of something taught in class and apply it to my life or real world situations I feel a sense of accomplishment.I feel that taking responsibility for one’s own learn is fundamental because if I don’t have the motivation to care about gaining knowledge and learning things for myself; who will care? Personally, I …show more content…
Before really discussing what atoms were, why they are important, and so on. We began talking about the scientists that contributed to the study of atoms. The main scientist that we discussed were Democritus, Rutherford, Thomson, Bohr, Dalton, Heisenberg, and Chadwick. Prior to taking chemistry I only knew about Democritus, the Greek philosopher who developed the modern atomic model, and Dalton, who further developed Democritus’s model of the atomic model, but I wanted to know more about the other scientist. That night I went home and did research on the other scientist. This led me to finding out very interesting information on the other scientist and having a deeper understanding on what part of their research is still relevant today. The extra research I did on the scientist was a just a small scale example of talking my education into my own hands and getting a deeper understanding of particular
In the current school year, five projects are available for students to apply for. SRP has a limited number of spots, but students get to work with their mentor on the issue or discuss with DPS what they should study (“The Center for Education Policy Research”).
I am applying for your residential summer school program in January 2016. The program appeals to me on many different levels. It will allow me to gain extra knowledge before I start my final year of VCE in my chosen subjects. Year 12 can be a very stressful year as I have experience in completing Legal Studies unit 3 and 4 this year. With any extra help, it can make the year easier. The program allows me to gain a different perspective on area of studies from different people. Teachers at my school may have one view point or a way of teaching an area of study different to how your tutors have. This opportunity allows me to gain a better insight into different ways that I can learn the content, rather than relying on
I agree with Farber’s idea. The statement stands true, if you are attentive in what you are learning most likely you will put in the time and energy into retaining the information. With everyone’s different personalities, I believe that it is hard for students to stay focused in classes that do not meet their
The freshman research symposium was an extremely beneficial one credit course which granted me insight to a multitude of research opportunities both inside my major and in alternative interesting topics. While the two-day course incorporated a wide array of individuals presenting their research, some stood out more than others for my personal interests. Overall, the symposium successfully expanded my research desires both in fields that are relevant to my major and for those that fall outside of it.
Why do I want to participate in the summer research program including my goals for summer, strengths I bring and what I hope to achieve. An idle mind is a stronghold of the devil. No teacher would want to be stagnant in this age of growing technology and information. If I were teaching Math maybe I would not worry so much as 6 x 9 would equal always to 54 but in Science, things do change fast and as I blink my eye I can lose sight of a shooting star right before my eye. I want to be where the change in Science happens. And I am always fascinated about new things. And it has a domino effect with my students.I may want to go to a place to rejuvenate as school days are always busy but time flies so fast before you know it, it is back to school again.I always encourage my students to go to summer programs, recommend them to workshops and trainings; I think I need one too myself. If I want to be a better teacher and be better at what I do which is teaching then I need to be in a summer program. I want to learn new things and be productive at the same time. I need to grow, books and videos and articles in magazines are sometimes not enough. This is the reason educational tours or virtual tours are important. We need to get out of the classroom and see the world or see what’s on the other world. If not for these great scientists who persevered and persisted, we would not have known the beauty of the cosmic space above us and the bottomless canyon and snow covered mountains of the
Research and discovery are things that I am extremely passionate about, and for this reason, engaged in opportunities related to them. From Mercer University’s world-renowned cancer research programs to research on drug delivery protocols, Mercer is committed to discovery and innovation for the betterment of the world. As research in the government sector particularly is interesting to me, due to my experiences at GTRI (Georgia Tech Research Institute), the Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC) and its numerous and innovate programs are extremely attractive to me. The ability by undergraduates to get involved in these projects, shown by MERC’s hiring of student assistants and partnerships with the Mercer University School of Engineering, gives students a unique perspective into real life problems. These experiences will not only make me irreplaceable on the job market and to graduate school admissions committees, but make for an undergraduate experience unparalleled in any other
R-E-A-D (Rejuvenating Excellence & Accomplishing Dreams) exists to empower young women to embrace, embody and envision their purpose-filled destiny by incorporating faith-based principles and academic accountability as well as fostering civic engagements through volunteerism. Please support our fundraising efforts to help defray participant scholarships, traveling and lodging accommodations during college campus tours/visits in addition to exposure to The Arts; i.e.: symphonies, plays and operas.
Independent learning is that learning in which the learner, in conjunction with relevant others, can make the decisions necessary to meet the learner’s own learning needs. (Kesten, 1987, p3). Independent learning is an important aspect of student’s life. According to self-regulated learning theories identified by Zimmerman (2001),"motivation, self-awareness, key processes, social and environmental influences and acquisition of self-regulated learning "are essential factors of independent learning. This essay will cover various aspects of independent learning. Such as, what does independent learning skills imply? How independent learning can be developed in the university and how does it benefit students in higher education.
In the fall of 2013, I began my first year at Carl Sandburg College (CSC), as a TRIO student and a continuing Gale Scholar, where I continued to achieve academic success. This year, I met two of my goals. The first one was gaining my Associate in Science
The opportunity to participate in the Summer Focus Program will provide me with a multitude of new experiences and challenges. The chance to participate in this program will challenge me in ways that will help me grow as a student. Being apart of this program will provide me with career guidance. I’m very interested in the science and medical field, but I’m unsure as to what I specifically want to study. The Young Scientist Program will help give me a feel of what this specific field is like. My experiences with the program will also provide me with preparation needed for college and the application process. As a soon to be rising senior, college is not too far away and guidance with the application process would help me tremendously. Participation
For as long as I can remember I have known I wanted to pursue a STEM related career with a focus on engineering. Dedicating myself to improve the world and making a difference in peoples’ lives through innovation and new technologies that will improve their standard of living is very appealing to me. For women, it is extremely competitive to find jobs, especially in a field that is highly dominated by men, which is why I would like to take this opportunity to get an introduction and a head start on my career. I believe that this program will give me the opportunity to gain experiences through professionals at a world-wide leading technology company.
In order to approach learning deeply, I feel I must be intrigued with what I’m doing. I give a purpose to my assignments, work, and life. It’s not all about getting a passing grade, but more about being so engaged that I grasp the material and take it to the next level. To be honest, I used to be a surface learner; therefore, I just got by without putting any effort into my assignments. In high school when I was assigned homework, I would just wait until the last-minute or even do it in class the second it was due. I lived each day without a care about stretching my abilities or about actually learning and understanding the content. Not only did I have a poor attitude about school, but I also lived my life without responsibility. As soon as I became confident in myself and my strength to flourish, I began questioning my work and assignments. I started to want to know additional information about the material I was assigned. I took the deep learning approach when I realized the surface learning approach was lacking. Once I changed the way I perceived information, I changed the way I lived my life. Every day there’s an option to see the world on a surface level or to see the world from a new perspective. It’s a choice to take learning to a whole new dimension.
Another one of the programs is the Community-based research fellows program, which is facilitated by a faculty member. Established to bond students, faculty, staff, and community, they emphasize the importance and strength associated with such collaboration, and it’s power to ignite social change. Resulting in problems within their communities being solved. Thus, my attention was drawn into this resource and the hands on aspect, as well as opportunities to start networking with people in the community, while making a difference (Applied learning
E2/MITES/MOSTEC will help me succeed in these goals of being an engineer through the many opportunities presented at the program. One opportunity being the advancement of my critical thinking skills. The schooling system I am placed in does not challenge me enough to use critical thinking skills, and having the ability to participate in one of these summer programs will enhance those skills. Another opportunity that it presents is team building skills, which includes communication leadership, and management skills. A functional team brings differing viewpoints together to create one successful solution. With all these skills I would gain or enhance, I would be more than prepared to prevail in my goals.
One of the main arguments behind good understanding is the argument for independent learning as opposed to teacher dependency. Overall & Sangster (2007, p.94) state that one of the hardest but most creditable achievements of a teacher is to help a student along the road to being
