As a new graduate that just completed Bachelors in Art with a concentration in Psychology, I felt it was time to move on to the next level of my education. Before, deciding on this career path, I had tried different careers. For example, my first career choice was to become a Lawyer however; I wanted to make sure that I did not waste money or time with a career that was not that interesting. Therefore, I took a couple of Paralegal classes and decide that Lawyers spend many hours on case after case. As a result, I decided that this would not be a smart choice because I have a family and I knew that I needed to balance work and family life especially since, that consist of, having a husband, two disabled boys and four girls. Because of this, I thought becoming a Special education teacher would be …show more content…
However, after taking Psychology classes I felt that I needed to help others in a different way. My boys have behavior problems and Autism and because of that, I was riveted and curious about behaviors and ways to help modify behaviors. Also, there therapist mentioned ABA therapy and since I am always searching information that I think would benefit them I started to look into Applied Behavior Analysis therapy. Learning about the reward systems to reinforce positive, learned behaviors and other techniques including incidental teaching, pivotal response training, and milieu therapy helped me realize that I could use my urge to aid others in a different way. Becoming a ABA would benefit me because I am compassionate, enjoy assisting others to achieve their goals, and I know that these factors are needed of me to achieve success because I learned from past career choices. In addition, the fact that I graduated with a 3.4 GPA, worked a full time job overnight, and had to assist my boys never stopped my determination to reach my goals. Therefore, not only do I know this career is the right choice but I know that I am dedicated to achieving my goals just as I
I hope to gain knowledge essential to the teaching of children that need special education services. Though I intend to be an elementary education teacher, I know that I will still encounter many children with disabilities, both physical and intellectual and I want to be able to give them the best education that I can while they are in my care.
My career goal is to obtain a master’s degree in elementary education by the end of Fall 2016 in order to start teaching by the beginning of Spring 2017. Upon completion of the dual certification track, I will receive elementary (K-6), special education (ESE K-6), and ESOL endorsements. Before entering graduate school, I always believed these certifications would prepare me for teaching more than if I had started teaching immediately after graduation. Today, I still hold this belief to be true, for I have opportunities now to closely practice, implement, and refine teaching skills, strategies, and qualities that I learned as an undergraduate in a real school setting. I am also able to work closely alongside teachers who have experience working with students with identified disabilities and experience the different behavioral responses that students with identified disabilities may exhibit. As a first year intern this semester, I even sat in on an EPT (Evaluation and Planning Team) meeting regarding whether or not a student in my first grade classroom should receive a 504 Plan that I did not get to
I sat in my room, all my attention captivated by the chaos occurring on the screen. My twelve-year-old self was too concerned on achieving my next objective; nothing could draw my attention away. After I was busy with the video game for an hour, my mother walked in seeking my help. I knew where this was going. Her questions typically ranged from something simple to needing help in understanding how to do something. ”Do you think you can help me understand this job application?” she asked. I had to answer her but my focus had not completely shifted. I waited for her to finish but I already had my response ready.
When I receive my bachelor’s degree in Special Education, I want to teach in elementary schools. I feel as though if you can start teaching the students in an inclusive classroom at a young age, everyone around will understand them more. I believe that if you can get the non-disabled kids to understand that the only thing that makes the disabled kids different from them is their disability, then they will start to associate with one another while their young. By them doing this, they are slowly becoming friends. Getting them to become friends at a young age is really important because it will limit the idea of the child that has a disability being bullied or teased by an individual that does not have a disability because he/she will understand them. While I
The time is now to become a Special Education Teacher. I believe the best fit for my academic and vocational goals is the UWM Exceptional Education Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification Program.
People are thought as child to dream big and reach for their goals. Throughout grade school to high school there are often asked what inspires them. Some people dream to become police officers, dancers, lawyers, and doctors. There are some people who chooses to become an educator. As they journey through college, to pursue the knowledge needed for their career, their passion leads them to special education. These teachers fine this career to be job satisfying, have empathy for the children, and the vacancy of the position viability. Not all teacher feel the same however, over time their dissatisfied with their job and leave because their brunt out.
One of the most essential aspects of the educational process is to know how to motivate students for learning. A challenging part of being a teacher is to know and learn how to motivate students. First of all, a good definition for motivation is as Byrnes quote “Motivation is construct
In the profession of a special education teacher, a person commits to helping children achieve their best and to help “students overcome their obstacles” while finding a way that the child can effectively learn (Hollingsworth). My mom’s career as special education teacher for twenty-two years, allows me insight and experience into the tougher aspects of this career, but also the rewards to the job. My mom helps me understand that a special education teacher guides a child to expand their strengths, develop strategies to overcome weakness, and to make best use of all available resources. Through helping her, and learning from her experiences, she taught me that a career in special education can not only challenge me, but may also become a
To ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for further education, employment and independent living, and to ensure that the rights of children with disabilities and parents of such children are protected….
I believe that I would be a good candidate for the Non-Traditional Deaf Education Certification Program through Region 17 Education Service Center and Texas Tech University because I have the inner motivation to be a Deaf Education Teacher someday. This inner motivation of mine is too personal. I have a sister who is deaf and mute who quitted elementary school because her needs were not met in the general public school in my country. Additionally, my parents could not afford to send her to a specialized private school. She was older than me, but she was placed in the same grade level I was in, so she could be helped personally inside the classroom.
In the beginning of the school year, I demonstrated leadership by participating in a Special Education Field Day. Students aged from kindergarten to twelfth grade with mental disabilities came from all over West Texas to have a fun-filled day of running, jumping, cycling, and games.
As we focus on future, we start to ponder and more about what our career paths are ultimately going to become. Being just a sophomore, I do not know where exactly where I am going to end up after college. However, there is one career path that can help with the barrier of education that children with disabilities face. By being is a special education teacher, which does the job of helping the students of disabilities to receive an education that every children rightfully deserves. By participating in this career you can have an opportunity to change the lives of these children who are not given the same privileges as able bodied students.By doing much research, there are an array of different nonprofit organizations one being Disabled For Attendant
My goal in teaching is to educate students and equip them with the tools necessary to think critically and logically so they will be able to draw conclusions and conceptually understand material they will be given in the future. Before this semester of service learning, I was expecting to teach younger students somewhere between kindergarten and third grade. After working with fourth through sixth grade students this semester, I feel as though teaching students in an older age range might be more fitting more me. I also feel as though I would now like to pursue a dual bachelor 's degree in both Elementary Education and Special Education. Growing up in these today’s world, our generations are torn between accepting each other as we come and discrimination and prejudice toward people who may be different than us. It is my belief that children aren’t born with a prejudgement toward varying cultures and skin colors, but that it is learned by those around us including family, friends, society, even television. It is in my role that I must show by example how people who may be different on the outside, are indeed all the same on the inside with feelings, brains, and hearts. As a teacher, I will dedicate time with my classroom exploring and embracing our differences that make us who we are and I will show my students that it is alright if we are different and that we can coexist and be friends even though we may not be identical. With the increasing number of English language
After reading the words of therapist who has experience, I realized a few things for myself. She had a point. I could amount to so much more if I put the effort in. My mind about the career changed a bit but it wasn’t drastic. Instead of being a therapist, I want to become a psychologist. I want to spend more time practicing at a career until no more can be done to change it.
In earlier, more primitive civilizations, all persons were expected to be able-bodied in order to stay alive. Those persons who had defects noted at birth were note protected and allowed to die at delivery or in early years. As time progressed, researchers and medical doctors began to study and treat children with disabilities. These actions aided in supporting the live on children that are challenged with disabilities (Reynolds & Fletcher-Janzen, 2002)
