Armando Christian Perez, otherwise known as Pitbull, was born in Miami, Florida on January 14, 1981. At a young age his parents divorced and he was raised by his mother until she found out about his drug dealing business. Once his secret was revealed his mother placed him in the foster system and he then grew up with a family in Roswell, Georgia. He went to school at Coral Park High School, where he graduated and made the tough decision to not continue on to college. Popularity from rapping and acting provided Pitbull with enough money to establish a school system based on developing the future generation for jobs that they will be need in. The school is built just outside the neighborhood that Pitbull had used as a drug dealing area in his youth and it is focused in the areas of sports medicine. His goal is to try and motivate the children that live in this area because he had never had anything to inspire him as a child. The school he created has been dubbed SLAM (Sports Leadership and Management) Charter School and its curriculum features regular classes like algebra and English, but the examples in these classes will relate to sports. The school has been both a hit and a miss in many people’s eyes as they all voice their opinion of this radical school. Some say that Pitbull has no place in academics and should remain in the areas that he is successful in. However, the evidence points to benefits of this school. Nearly three thousand students applied for the limited spots in this school and all are excited to attend a school that will have classes that focus on the sport that they love. Due to the forgoing facts brought to light by Kozol in his essay, it is apparent that there is a growing trend of racial segregation within America’s urban and inner-city schools. Educators and politicians seem to have abolished any semblance of respect for learning for its own sake and have made the school system a joyless experience for the majority of the children, which in turn seems to be related to the high drop-out rate in the inner-city schools. For America to remain great, just and competitive in today’s world, these educational anomalies must be timely addressed and corrected adequately.
