When I moved away from home for the first time, I rented a townhome with two of my high school classmates, Kaylin and Rachel. Each of us attended Wichita State, worked part time, and lived similar lifestyles, so we believed our arrangement to be ideal, despite not having been the closest of friends. The planning stage was very exciting and involved lengthy discussions about who would furnish the living room, kitchen, or dining room and how we would handle expenses and house rules. Additionally, the three of us agreed to share the cleaning and other household responsibilities, but within three months, Kaylin and I quickly realized only the two of us had meant it. In order to bring this to Rachel’s attention and request she start contributing …show more content…
This allows the speaker to get his or her point across and leaves the lines of communication open for the listener to respond. After all, assertiveness is a positive quality not to be confused with aggressiveness; rather, the goal of being assertive is to stand up for yourself while still showing respect for the other person. This is best done by using “I-messages,” expressing your own feelings, showing empathy, and suggesting ways to resolve the issue that benefits both parties (DeVito 121). Thus, when applied properly, assertiveness can greatly improve one’s interpersonal communication …show more content…
I then moved on to describe how Kaylin and I felt it was unfair that we were having to do extra cleaning, when we had schoolwork and jobs too. As for solutions, I told her Kaylin called dibs on vacuuming and asked her to choose one of the other chores she felt she could do each week, such as cleaning the kitchen or the bathrooms. I would complete the remaining tasks myself. In an effort to make her decision easier, I even pointed out that cleaning the bathrooms took the least amount of time, and thus would be more accommodating of her busy schedule. After a little prompting, Rachel agreed to start cleaning the bathrooms regularly, and as a bonus, she herself acknowledged that she had become sloppy about not picking up after herself, and agreed to try to improve in that area as well! To conclude, I thanked her for listening, reiterated that household responsibilities require a team effort which we all benefit from, and asked if she could clean the bathrooms before the end of the week, as maintenance had scheduled a routine
I received a moderate score of 27 for assertiveness and-and 42 for my level of responsiveness and this information suggests that my social style is amiable according to mapping my results. In general, assertiveness can be defined as a person’s ability to make appeals, actively disagree express positive and negative personal feelings, and stand up for themselves without criticizing another person (Beebe & Mottet, 2016). Likewise, responsiveness is the capacity to be sensitive to the communication of others while being seen a good listener in order to make others comfortable in communicating. There are various ways to respond to others as well as steps that I can use to style flex. Upon sharing my scores with my co-worker, her perception of the results seemed somewhat accurate and she offered suggestions about my social style. Furthermore, there are manners that my social style may affect my listening skills and ways that I can improve as a listener. Also, style flexing can assist with communication effectiveness in different manners.
Thank you for your considering my application to the Applied Behavior analysis program. For all of my life I have known that I was going to help people. It could be said that it is in my DNA. I just never suspected what the capacity would be. On December 15thI graduated from Albright college, I began working at Melmark on December 16th. My first thought, on that first day was “Oh no, I can’t do this, I need to quit” That was over two years ago, and I have gone to work every day, with a smile on my face. While working at my first position, out of college, I discovered my passion. My passion, I find, is working with children and adults with autism and with people who suffer from addiction. Watching the smiles on their faces, the determination when they work to complete a goal, and just the progress makes every hardship worth it, I love it. Each day, in my position as an ABA, I run behavior support plans, IEPs, teaching plans and other protocols, and each day I truly wish that I could have contributed to these plans, protocols, and IEPs. I ponder the recommendations that I could come up with, I wonder that if I had been able to participate in these conversations to create these plans could I have brought something else to the table, a different viewpoint. Affecting the way that the plans are written and in turn ran, I feel that I could make a big difference in the lives of the children and their families also. Every two weeks each child’s team meets to discuss his or her

This paper focuses on applied behavior analysis (ABA). The concept of ABA in definition is the use of knowledge gained within science of behavior to improve behaviors that are socially crucial. The researchers of this paper focus not the importance of having parents use ABA training when working with their children who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There has been a large amount of research done on ABA techniques and it is something that has been used in many different fields of practice. Areas such as social work, education, medicine, etc have benefited from the ABA approach. Now it is important to distinguish what the views of parents using ABA are.
Maria is seventeen and starting her senior year in high school. She lives with her parents, ten-year-old brother, and nine-month-old sister. They live in a mobile home and work blue collar jobs. The family is very close and sometimes find it difficult to let others in, especially if they are not part of the extended family. Mom and dad both work full time and rely on Maria to watch her brother in the
Behavior modification is field within psychology that specializes in identifying relationships between a specific behavior and environmental events as well as creating and instituting procedures that help individuals to change a particular behavior. When behavior analysts conduct research they use research designs that help them to identify whether a change in the targeted behavior or dependent variable was result of implementation of a specific treatment plan or independent variable (Miltenberger, 2008). This paper addresses the use of research design methods in a case study involving Martin, an ABA psychologist, who has
My parents purchased the 3 bedroom, 1.5 bathroom house after falling in love with its wraparound porch and backyard. The house was literally a street over from where we were renting a house that was the size of a postage stamp and with two teenage girls who were wanting more of their own space, this new house had everything. Though the furnace was on its last legs and needed to be turned off when not in use for fear that the house would explode, and that the half bathroom resembled that of a closet with a toilet in it, the sheer fact that this house wasn’t owned by anyone other than my parents made the house a home.
Facilitated Communication (FC) is a technique used by some caregivers in an attempt to help those with severe communication disabilities. Rosemary Crossley, the originator of FC, came up with this technique in the late 1970’s and it was originally used for individuals with cerebral palsy. A little over a decade later, FC made its way to the U.S. by way of Douglas Biklen and he extended it to autism. Biklen argued that we had it all wrong and that autism is primarily a motor, not mental, disorder. For that reason, many used FC, or supported typing as it is called today, as a means to communicate with autistic individuals who have severe communication disabilities. FC requires two people, the individual with autism and the facilitator.
Conceptually consistent programs within behavior analysis are those programs that use the principles of operant learning theory. Sensory integration and mindfulness therapies are not conceptually consistent with the principles of behavior analysis.
The commonness of aggressiveness in the healthcare field is used by aggressive communicator, or people who feel the need to be assertive this behavior of assertiveness is use mainly by the doctors. Most male doctors go in to a patients room already in a mindset and this is a form of aggressive communication, because you're not going in the room to listen to the patient. More than usual the aggressive communication comes from the patients who feel they have been treated unfairly. Aggressive communication is from a person who usually has low-self esteem, so they feel the need to try to overpower another person. Some examples of this is by cursing, physically attacking someone, or interrupting and being loud trying to talk over the other person. This is why the prevalence of aggressiveness in the healthcare setting is hugely known.
Applied Behavior Analysis analysts are required to know the steps that are needed and necessary for behavior modification. This type of modification requires a clear definition of the behavior needing modification (target behavior), how this will benefit the individual in need of the modification, a clear plan of modification, and consistent data gathering to determine the effectiveness of the proposed behavior modification plan. In order to achieve a successful modification plan, the ABA professional first needs to gather information about the individual either by direct or indirect means. The modification must always been in the best interest of the individual, or those closest to the individual, and it must be a functional modification that can be carried out in the absence of the analyst. The ABA professional needs to understand the needs of each client. In order to do this, the professional will have to assess the behavior, gather data, identify a target behavior, propose a hypothesis about an intervention, implement the modification program, gather more data about the effectiveness of the program, and report about the outcome.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most misunderstood methods of reinforcement. ABA also is referred to as ‘behavior modification’, which is the main contributor of the negative connotation with this method. ABA is the application of behavioral learning principles to change behavior (Woolfolk 256). Applied Behavior Analysis can be very successful in the classroom if done correctly. However, to begin this, one must study a student to decide what reinforcers will best work to modify the behavior.
Being assertive means asking for what you want and refusing to take NO for an answer. Practice expressing your feelings without anxiety or anger. Let people know what you want in a non-threatening way. Practice 'I ' statements. For example, instead of saying, "You shouldn 't do that," try substituting, "I don 't feel comfortable
