heartyhealth.com.au - The Importance of Food Presentation and Taste in Catering to Child Care Centres
The secret to successfully catering to child care centres is to acknowledge the importance of food presentation and taste in each meal we deliver to the centres. Experts have long known that humans eat using their eyes first and then their mouths. This simply means both adults and children will not eat the meals when they lack visual appeal. Once the food entices the visual senses, it must next give off a pleasant aroma since our sense of smell influences how we perceive the flavour of foods. Children at day-care centres can be particular about what they will eat each day. We make it our mission to provide meals the encourage children to consume
To please their screaming unruly children, parents will do whatever they say, even if it means buying them an extra fry at a fast food restaurant, or a few sandwiches. Most “parents know that such meals are unhealthy, they are struggling in a “toxic environment” with little support or recognition for the challenges of raising children in such a world”(Purcell 3). In an environment without support, you are just going to keep on falling.
A major role Fresno Unified School District Nutrition Center (FUSD) plays in their school lunch program is making sure that the items they provide the students are nutritious and delicious. To get this feedback, the district conducts taste tests of current and possible upcoming lunch items. The district can gather this information three different ways. The first way FUSD can gather information is through student opinion. They do this by hosting a meeting with student groups; here FUSD has the opportunity to inform the students of what FUSD does and how their group can impact next year’s lunch by providing feedback.
In the article “Can Cinderella and Elsa convince kids to eat vegetables?”by Abha Bhattarai, the author discusses how Disney and other food companies are hoping to influence the way families around the world eat. Disney and other companies have designed ways to encourage families with children to change their eating habits. These companies’ strategies are to put characters who will appeal to children on food items and will cause parents to buy the product.
The second theme, ‘autonomy’ reveals the multiple times children are given individual food choices by their parents. For example, Jennie states “Breakfast is a funny thing because everyone has something different, and it's all tailored to individual needs” (LE, 2014, p. 1). Similarly, “So, I cook for them, and I tend to give them a choice” (LE, 2014, p. 4). Interestingly, Jenny giving her children choices about meals is in opposition to control theories of the parent’s role in children’s food intake (Brown & Ogden, 2004).

Feeding your child the right foods and the right amounts of food is very important for their educational success. A study at the University of Cape Town proves that children with an unhealthy or unsubstantial breakfast find it challenging to concentrate in classes.
If someone were to hand you a foreign object, give you no explanation as to what it was, and tell you to eat it, would you? Most sane adults would not; at least not without being given any further information. Yet this is the exact scenario many parents put their young children through when feeding them. Naturally, just as an adult would, infants and toddlers object to this practice and put up a fuss. They want to touch, mash, spread, and play with their food before consuming it. However, many parents are frustrated and aggravated by the mess their children make; thus they endeavor to discourage this behavior. In doing this parents actually negatively impact their child’s development. The manner in which a child is introduced to food sets
This article expresses that almost 82% of American kids less than 6 years old are in childcare. "So nourishment, exercise or physical action and other wellbeing issues are all being taken care of by persons other than the essential folks for a noteworthy number of hours every day." This article is to a great degree enlightening and extremely instructive in light of the fact that numerous folks wouldn 't consider what their youngsters are getting sustained when they aren 't around and simply accept that they are getting solid and nutritious snacks and dinners for the duration of the day. So with this article putting fault on the childcare and school offices one may contend that despite everything it is the folks who are to be faulted for not facilitate investigating what their youngsters are eating or the measure of activity they are accepting on an everyday premise.
The children’s inclination for the appearance or taste of four different brands of chocolate biscuits, breakfast biscuits, and breadsticks is what needs to be investigated. The accomplishment would be to determine the visual and taste fondness of three gluten-free commercial products. This study would help nurses during patient teachings to make recommendations of gluten-free products and it would help nurses in the appearance of foods being served to patients. Kildegaard et al. have presented that the way the food looks will define if the child will eat it or not. Cooke & Wardle found that girls select healthier foods than boys at all ages. Thirty children ,22 females and 8 males, age range 6-12 years, with diagnosis of celiac disease from more than 2 years were selected to do this study. The independent variables are the four different brands of three gluten free products, and the dependent variable is the high preference of appearance test. The children used the 5-point hedonic facial scale to evaluate the different foods. The visual tests always showed higher scores in the 5-point scale than the taste-liking rating. The taste test showed that children’s anticipations were lower than expected. It is important to make the food given to patients have a nice appearance so they can at least try the food and not reject it without tasting it first. A limitation is that the children must’ve been diagnosed within two years with celiac disease. Manufacturing companies

In my introduction I argued that good nutrition is a stepping stone to a healthy life and for children this is essential to a strong start. Yet research shows that as young children they don’t have much control over what foods are in their household or what they are fed, proving it is important to work with parents to make sure they understand how critical good nutrition is.

I remember a time when I was working in an infant classroom and I had a “those parents” moment. It involved the parents of a 12 month old who was still strictly on baby food, which is provided by the center. When infants in the classroom turned roughly 9 months we would speak with parents about the introduction of table foods from our centers menu in addition to their normal meals/snacks. Each week we would give them a menu for the upcoming week for them to highlight items that they were comfortable with their child sampling to send back to us. This process is set up so that when the child turns one, they are transitioned over to the regular menu and no longer have baby food provided by the center and the parents would be responsible for supplying the meals. However, with the parents of this particular child they always sent back the menus with yogurt and applesauce highlighted. Unfortunately, without parent consent, we could not allow the child to sample any of the other table foods. It made me wonder why they were being so strict on the table foods. The Cultivating Good Relationships article helps to put an end to the “those parents” thoughts by giving strategies that help the situation by building relationships, instead of dwelling on the challenges.
