As the aspiring trainer, I would like to learn how to measure my learning outcomes both quantitatively and qualitatively. There are myriad strategies for conducting formative and summative assessments around the corner. However, I should be able to identify and implement the appropriate assessment method suitable for learners with different abilities, gender, age and professional background; Linear with the aim and objective of the programme and the learning outcomes expected. To add on, I should also be able to interpret the assessment results in maximum possible ways and means to be able to feedback learners accordingly. As well as use the data to modify/improve the session plans, activities included, and instructional teaching techniques for continual improvement of my programme effectiveness as well as my teaching strategies. Assessment for learning was practiced in my training rooms via numerous activities like Q & A, minute paper, role plays, written test, learning journal, simulations and demonstration throughout the programme. I realized that session objective is the subset of programme objective. Thus, in one of my session, the objective was to measure leaner’s cognitive abilities like:- Product knowledge and understanding capabilities Applying their learnings into the given situation To summarize their learning. For the above said reason, I decided to give written test. Consequently, learners earned an opportunity:- To think and write their answers

The assessments best suited to guide improvements in student learning are quizzes, tests, writing assignments, and other assessments such as a group activity. Assessment, both formative and summative, plays a significant part in the learning experience as it determines progression and enables learners to demonstrate that they have achieved their desired learning outcomes.
There is a large variety of assessment methods available for assessing learners’ achievements. These include observation; questioning the learner; examining product evidence; discussion; witness testimony; looking at learner statements; recognising prior learning; simulated environment; skills tests; oral and written examinations; assignments; case studies and projects. Choosing the most appropriate assessment methods is vitally important, to help and support the learner and to ensure the job of the assessor is as straightforward, reliable and problem-free as possible.
Haydn (2009 cited in Capel et al 2009 page 329) defines assessment as "all those activities which are undertaken by teachers, and others, to measure the effectiveness of teaching and learning".
Assessments are used to track not only learner but tutor progress. Below I have documented some utilised in my everyday teaching life:
Assessment for learning will help the learning support practitioner because it will inform us of which areas the pupils may need support with. It will give us better judgement on how to question the children and give them feedback on their work and will also show any problem areas that some less able children need to work at.
Assessment is carried out through formative (checks throughout the course), ipsative (to test against previous marks), and/ or summative (at end of course) activities to help the learner see their development whilst allowing the Assessor to give valuable feedback when appropriate. It’s purpose is to measure the learners understanding of the subject against the anticipated outcomes set by the criteria.
There are many reasons why we assess learners. Assessments enable tutors to measure learner’s progress towards their goal. And feedback can be given to help them such as outlining their strengths and weaknesses. Feedback is used to help learners learn and improve, and is the most important aspect of formative assessment. This can be given in various ways such as written, oral, in the form of graded/marked assignment etc. When giving feedback it is good practice to bear in mind the following points. It is important to give immediate feedback if possible; turn negative comment into constructive comments such as what to improve on before the next assessment; make assessment criteria clear, accurate and available; feedback to be clear, accurate and recorded; praise learner on achievement; encourage positive attitudes and make further suggestions. Learners can be encouraged through communication of how well they are doing and what skills and knowledge they are developing.
The function of assessment in learning and development is to provide a measurable way of planning and supporting students’ progress. Assessment is carried out by means of checks and tests carried out throughout the course. Assessors should provide feedback throughout ensuring that learning is occurring and the learner is at the correct level. It is also important that assessor’s decisions are also consistently reviewed and internally and externally verified.
Assessment opportunities should be created during each lesson in an informal way. This can be through having a conversation with a learner about what has happened during the lesson and asking some key questions to see if they are able to show that they have understood and therefore, the objectives have been met.
By linking different aspects of learning through holistic assessment you can get a clearer picture of student ability. This will also highlight student’s strengths and weaknesses.
I need to monitor and assess the progress of each student by maintaining accurate record using a variety of assessment tools, gaining feedback, formative informative,formal and informal whilst also maintaining my organisations requirements.
