Academic integrity is the code of academic conduct that is set forth by educational institutions. It is the catalyst for the mission of most institutions. The expectation is that students will be honest and responsible as it pertains to academia. As defined by the Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Academic Integrity is the moral code or ethical policy of academia. This includes values such as avoidance of cheating or plagiarism; maintenance of academic standards; honesty and rigor in research and academic publishing. Many believe academic integrity to be a strong, pervasive and understood rule when going to Universities and Community Colleges across the globe; however, in the recent decades, abiding to the rules and policies to uphold academic integrity has slowly become more problematic for students across the board. Academic Integrity Statement: I have read and understood the Academic Integrity guidelines for Kaplan Open Learning and the University Of Essex, and declare that this assignment conforms to all of the rules and regulations contained therein.

A few years ago, terms such as academic integrity and plagiarism meant nothing to me. As far as I believed, they were words that only applied to scholarly authors and not a mere high school student. How would I have known? In high school, no teacher cared if the work you submitted was an authentic synthesis of your own thoughts and ideas. Therefore, from the reference assignment, I am sure that I am guilty of problem number one, “But it’s supposed to be a research paper!” as stated by the article on academic integrity. Most times I would copy and paste the information from my sources or not document the information taken from them within my papers.

A person of integrity does exactly what he says and says exactly what he means. There is no conflict between his thoughts and actions. His actions are consistent with the values he professes. According to Dr. William Manninger, A building without integrity may receive structural damage, or even collapse, in a storm. Similarly, people without integrity are blown about by the winds of misfortune and destroyed by catastrophes, for they lack the firmness, solidity, and strength of character to weather any storm. This means that integrity is one of the six essential qualities that are the key to success.

The word “ integrity” seems to float around me, its very existence locked in my mind. The word integrity will never be forgotten, never be lost, but the meaning behind the word integrity has yet to be discovered. Oprah Winfrey once said “Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not. ” Integrity is something I believe in and value greatly. To me integrity is doing the right thing even when no one else is watching. Most people always look for an easy choice, but it's not about the easy choice it's about the right choice.

My goal is to demonstrate good academic practice, therefore integrity is a significant characteristic for me to exhibit in order to succeed academically. I believe that plagiarism replicates poor scholarly values and avoiding plagiarism is a reflection of good academic integrity. I have inquired the skills to comprehend the difference between plagiarism and non-plagiarism. Acknowledging the person whose concepts and words I have reproduced is the only effective way to avoid plagiarism. In addition, demonstrating integrity will help me to establish a great student-teacher rapport which may lead to me securing future employment by receiving reputable recommendations from my professors.

The word integrity means a lot and is a positive trait. To have integrity means you have a quality of being honest. Integrity is something really important in life. And people will look up to you if you have integrity.

And integrity check is a test that God gives us to evaluate intentions. This check is a springboard to an expanded spear of influence. Because of my line of work, being in the music industry, I'm tested often as it pertains to the integrity test. Many times, I am around faithless people who do not have values and morals. I have to decide between blending, or say what is right according to the word of God. The most recent situation is when I was asked to say that a specific person wasn't involved in one of the writing sessions so that everyone else would make more money. I refused to do it because a little extra money in my pocket wouldn't be worth my witness and relationship with God.

Liberal arts education shapes an individual who has necessary characteristics for reaching academic integrity. Academic integrity is the pursuit of scholarly activity in an open, honest and responsible manner (definition of academic integrity according to Pennsylvania State University). Liberal arts education gives confidence, so you do not need to cheat or plagiarize, it helps to find a job easily, honestly remaining the sense of self- esteem. Academic ethics are the moral codes or the shared standards of an academic enterprise and the core of its success (Occidental College, 2016). Basically, academic ethics require each student, to be honest, responsible, fair, respectful, give credit where it is due, turn in their original work, and etc. (Michigan State University, n.d.). Academic integrity requires students to do their own work without unauthorized help from others, cheating, lying, plagiarizing, and stealing (Valdosta State University, 2016).
