I generally believe in treating all people as I would like to be treated, with respect and courtesy; as a carer I regularly deal with two different groups of people – service users and colleagues. I have had many life experiences which have helped me foster an understanding of diversity. When I was in the military I was stationed in South Korea and I experienced diversity on a major scale. For once in my life I was considered the minority. However, the strongest experience I have with diversity was growing up with a mother with a developmental disability, this life experience taught me to be accepting of others. I have now been at Creekview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center for one month working as an intern in their social work department under the supervision of Sara Treadwell. Every day that I am in the facility I am noticing how diverse both the employees and the residents are. At Creekview there are numerous challenges that I have seen Sara have to work through, and most of the time it in some way deals with diversity. As a social worker I am going to have to be prepared to work with diversity in many different forms, and know how to address it in a respectful way.
Diversity means different and identifying peoples differences and understanding the unique nature of them by applying value to each and every difference.
