I generally believe in treating all people as I would like to be treated, with respect and courtesy; as a carer I regularly deal with two different groups of people – service users and colleagues. A consistent part of my job is to meet the needs of service users who would fall under the disabilities characteristic in the Equality Act 2010.

Making sure equality and diversity procedures are followed in a business environment will impacts on overall success of organisation. By recognising the strengths of differences between individuals company can get a great advantage in terms of employee motivation and clients satisfaction.

Health and social care professions have in common the concept of a 'duty of care' toward their users. This means that the wellbeing of the service user should be central to their work. All treatment given must have a therapeutic benefit to the user or must be essential for saving life.

Diversity allows us to expand our horizons and see things from others perspective. To me, diversity means the ability to grow and connect with others and expand your knowledge of the world’s cultures, diversity means not to judge but to appreciate. Diversity is exciting and brings fun to our lives. Being able to relate to others that our different from ourselves helps shape our personalities and who we truly are as human beings. Without diversity we would all be the same.

To me diversity is the interaction between a group of people who come from all regions of the world and accept each other for being different. Interacting with someone who comes from a different background and has distinct ideas than your own, creates an exciting environment when joining forces to meet a common goal.

I have had many life experiences which have helped me foster an understanding of diversity. When I was in the military I was stationed in South Korea and I experienced diversity on a major scale. For once in my life I was considered the minority. However, the strongest experience I have with diversity was growing up with a mother with a developmental disability, this life experience taught me to be accepting of others. It is a social worker’s primary responsibility to respect the inherent dignity and worth of a person. I believe that I had this social work value instilled in me when I was a child. I have now been at Creekview Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center for one month working as an intern in their social work department under the supervision of Sara Treadwell. Every day that I am in the facility I am noticing how diverse both the employees and the residents are. At Creekview there are numerous challenges that I have seen Sara have to work through, and most of the time it in some way deals with diversity. As a social worker I am going to have to be prepared to work with diversity in many different forms, and know how to address it in a respectful way.

Diversity means different and identifying peoples differences and understanding the unique nature of them by applying value to each and every difference.​
