Significance: This topic is extremely significant because gun rights are under attack from many politicians in America, who are attempting to take protection out of the hands of the law-abiding citizens of this great country. Current laws in much of the country control what kind of gun people can and cannot own, as well as when and where they can carry them (if at all). In addition, more restrictive gun laws have not reduced mass shootings and have allowed for a larger number of gun-related deaths to occur.

The Grievances of Anti-Gun Control It appears as though the repetitive and unfortunate tragedies of mass shootings have become incorporated into the everyday life of American culture. We are forced to live in a heightened degree of fear, skepticism, and hesitation concerning our public safety. This phenomenon could reasonably occur in response to the vast ineffectiveness of the country’s current gun laws. Time after time similar misfortunes arise, yet few major changes are implemented to prevent them from reoccurring in the future. We cannot let this trend continue any further. Though some claim that increased gun control is useless and infringes upon the Second Amendment, it limits civilians’ weapons grade, obstructs those deemed unfit to wield such lethal weapons, and insures a greater level of security, thus it should be executed.

Author James Q. Wilson, a professor of management and public policy at the University of California in Los Angeles writes the article “Just Take Away Their Guns” to provide the American public with evidence of why taking away their guns will have little effect on crime in the United States. “Just Take Away Their Guns” was published into the New York Times Magazine in March, 1994. Professor Wilson, author of many books such as “Thinking about Crime,” “Bureaucracy,” “The Moral Sense,” and “Moral Judgment” uses statistics to advocate for perspective on gun control. The article not only addresses the use of guns but also provides a lot of textual evidence to support the author’s claims related to legal restraints on lawful purchases of guns. Firearms present in the homes of American citizens, while potentially dangerous, provide these citizens with a sense of security.

The question of banning or permitting concealed guns evokes many more questions. According to Lott (2013), when the state legislative hearings were processed about concealed-handgun laws, the most usual concerns involved the problem of armed citizens who may possibly attack each other in the affected state that could follow car accidents, or even may accidentally shoot a dutiful police officer. However, the author argues, the evidence does not show the grounds for such fears: although 31 states have already had such concealed-handgun laws for many decades, there was only one case of a concealed handgun used in a shooting after a traffic accident. The debate over gun control has been raging through the American political systems for years. Whether the shootings are accidental or intentional; they are happening across the United States. Nevertheless, in today’s society, gun violence is sparking debate and controversy on how to control gun violence. Throughout the country, thousands of laws and regulations have been created to aid in the control of guns. Through much study, the gun laws and regulations in place have very little effect on the number of gun related injuries and deaths. More needs to be done to establish an effective way to control gun violence.

Concealed Carry on Campus: Promoting the Safety of Students Carrying a concealed weapon is the practice of carrying a concealed firearm on one 's person in public (Concealed Weapons Law & Legal Definition). There are several reasons why people feel the need to carry concealed weapons. Some feel wary of the environment in which they live, thanks in part to high crime rates. Some like the assurance that a weapon provides them in the event that a police officer is not available. Others simply like to exercise the right that the Second Amendment has granted them. Concealed carry varies state to state. For example, in Florida one would need a certain permit to carry pepper spray over a two-ounce volume, as it is considered a weapon rather than a self defense mechanism (Woodard). In addition to this, knives, stun guns, batons, and various other non-lethal weapons are regulated differently state to state. For the purpose of this paper, I will be focusing specifically on the concealed handguns within the concealed carry weapon category. I’m also choosing to focus specifically on concealed rather than open carry, as most responsible gun owners understand the negative consequences of open carry, the main consequence being, setting yourself up as a target for a shooter (Students for Concealed Carry on Campus 171).
