Native American Culture needs to be portrayed authentically. In order to respect Native American traditions and practices the media needs to provide a sense of teaching through humor and a circular perception of time. In order to do so instead of the classic scene of a Native American dancing around a fire speaking “tanto”, allow for the mocking by an elder of a child who was misbehaving around the fire instead. In many tribes this is how the children are taught what behaviors are acceptable. The problem is as a viewer that kind of reinforcement has never been represented on screen. As Rod Rondeaux said from Reel Injun “we are starting to not recognize ourselves.” The protection of authentic native american traditions through film is not only
How does the history of the Native American in the U.S. compare with the values that stand at the foundation of the U.S. (freedom, liberty, equality)?
Patricia, great post. I do think that a culture that needs some attention is the Native American culture. There are many reasons why this culture needs attention from the medical community. Some of the issues that could be covered when seeing the Native American culture are mental health, heart disease, stroke, infant mortality, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and cancer.
Seeking tradition and spirituality has always been prime through the course of this life. Believing and finding truths of the spirt realm’s unknown gives comfort while living. With so many people coming and settling in America, there begins to be a shift of different religions and spiritual practices emerging. America's founders established a civilization that would embrace the differences that countless cultures would bring to the United States. But here lies the challenges with this concept. It has been hard even in the late 1800s when the Native Americans did not want to conform to new Christianity; it created a rift that is still president here today with not only the natives but different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. In an article
The leaves can be used in money sachets, incenses, scrying and spells. Use in talismans for courage or strength. Use as a base for lust drinks. To ensure future riches, burn the leaves.
Every culture is different. From different countries, to different states, to different cities to different families. From a very young age each person establishes a culture of their own, revolving around beliefs, traditions and morals. Growing up, many people attend church with their parents. There, they learn how they ae expected to behave, what holidays they will celebrate, and sometimes that is where they make their first set of friends. When someone moves to a new place where they are expected to change their culture, the transition can be very difficult. For example, if someone attends the same church for the first ten years of their life, but then ends up switching due to uncontrollable circumstances, such as a parent getting deployed,
Did you know the Sioux nation is made up of the Dakota Sioux, the Lakota Sioux and the Nakota Sioux? My heritage affects me in multiple ways, including the foods I eat, the traditions I do with my family, and the languages I know. Here are the three my heritage affects me: foods, traditions, and languages.
Every country and nation have they own special festivals and music, and Native American is no exception. First, the native music related many aspects such as ritual, life and work. They like to combine music with dance, and the Native American music always created rich percussion instruments. For example, the hand drum, log drum, water drum and rattle, etc. The Powwow is an important festival and ritual for the Native American, and it is a symbol of the tradition culture of Native Indians. Powwow, is a social gathering by the Native American tribes, and they are singing and dancing. Powwow is not only a method that the Native American expresses the enthusiasm of the life and peace, but also enhances the sense of identity and cohesion.

According to the Mailing List Finder of Native Peoples Magazine, it is said that the majority of the audience is college-educated readers and mostly occupy positions such as professional managers. To understand why they celebrate, you have to look into their past to see who they are, where they've been. To see what it's like dancing in moccasins. Each nation has a different story, but you might find that collectively, they celebrate the preservation of a way of life as much as life itself. To make sense of that, Channel Nine, Harmony Alliance, KCP&L, the Anti-Defamation League, McDonald's, and IBM went to the Kickapoo Reservation to talk to Paul Guiseppe, a tribal elder who is well respected because he has seen a lot. Stated, “at one time, this whole continent, the United States, was our country. It was taken away from us. We was forced to go on. Like my people, they had come from round the Great Lakes. And when we were one nation, one tongue
Does everyone comprehend enough of their own culture identity? Every culture has their own identity. We all have the same human race. However, for me, even though USA is one of the biggest countries in the world, it’s hard to believe USA is a multicultural country, which has many people who came from overseas to the US to represent their own culture in there. There are Native American culture, Mexican culture, Chinese culture, Korean culture etc. and there is no way to count all the cultures which exist in the US because there are just a lot of them.
Native American actor, Adam Beach believes that “we’ll never be able to change the fantasy of who and what Indians are. That fantasy will always be there, we will always be on the covers of novels saying ‘Cheyenne Warrior’ (Reel Injun)!” Though this is an understandable perspective, the fantasy surrounding Native American portrayal is something that popular culture needs to rectify with reality. This adjustment in portrayals should start with the visual media industry due to the significant role they have to play in how Native Americans are viewed by the general population. Film, one of the most popular cultural mediums for communicating perspectives on history, especially needs to work to shift their focus to more realistic portrayals of indigenous
Last class we talked about Native Americans. I don’t know so much about this culture. However, I was shocked when I learn that many Native Americans overcome with despair. Also, how this caused limited education, unemployment, and suicide. Learning about Native Americans culture make me wants to read more about this culture. I totally agree with the book that to understand the problem started we must understand the culture. I learn how Native Americans culture are different. The historical story about religions and the killed attract me to learn about Native Americans history specific the conflict between the government and Native Americans. I think it is helpful to examine the historic and cultural identity. There is a great diversity in Native
Before white people had ever set foot in the new world, the 9-10 million natives had already inhabited America. “The name “Indian” was given them by Christopher Columbus who mistakenly believed he had landed in the Indies” ( "Native American History" ). The Native Americans were people who could adapt to their particular regions and made wise use of the natural resources around them. They believed in respecting the land and its natural gifts. “We must protect the forests for our children, grandchildren and children yet to be born. We must protect the forests for those who can't speak for themselves such as the birds, animals, fish and trees”( Qwatsinas ). They became proficient fishermen, hunters, farmed crops such as corn, and built homes
According to the article “Native American Cultures,” the history of the Native Americans began approximately 12,000 years ago with the migration of Asian nomads over a large land bridge. The article then explains how these nomads would splinter across the North American continent, creating no fewer than ten identifiable cultural areas. As each area became more established, tribes began to develop traits such as how food was obtained. Many tribes continued to be nomadic, just as their ancestors were, depending on how harsh their environment was. The article also shares how unfortunately for all of these Native American tribes, a prevailing theme was that the introduction of Europeans and their diseases proved to be a foe too powerful to overcome. I agree with the article in all three of the following themes: tribes varied on how they obtained food, whether a tribe became settled or nomadic was dependent upon their environment, and all Native American tribes were affected by European settlers in some negative way.
I learned many aspects of traditional American Indian life that I had not known previously, such as their customs and traditions. In the Andes, ethnic identity and place of origin was often expressed by hats. The unique colors and designs could help distinguish a person, as the patterns were unique to the groups that made them. I also learned interesting facts like the Andean people knowing for thousands of years that the bark of a quina tree cures malaria, yet catholic missionaries did not learn this until the 1600s resulting in quinine to become a very valuable export to Europe right after its discovery, saving countless lives. Beads were also a prominent part of the American Indian life. Native people saw brightly colored beads as prized
