According to the AVID Strategies for Curricular Enhancement Article, AVID is a system of best practices in teaching and learning that has successfully helped more than 400,000 learners over the past 30 years. The main goal of AVID is to close the achievement gap by preparing students for college readiness and success in a global society. One of AVID strategies is the Active Learning Methods, also known as ALMS. Active Learning Methodologies (ALMs) are strategies that AVID teachers and trainers have used very effectively to engage students in active learning. The more that it is being used the more quickly students continue to engage and respond. I believe an effective teacher keeps their students engaged and responsive to the lesson that is being taught. This strategy can be benefiting because it has an effective way to keep my students engaged in the lesson and attentive and responsive being taught.
Another AVID strategy is the writing strategy known as the Cornell Note Taking System. It includes recording ideas and content, questioning, summarizing, reflecting, reviewing, and assessing. It incorporates not only how to write notes, but also how students should use the notes they have recorded. Using Cornell Notes can be very beneficial to my students because it helps to increase the understanding of the topic. The first time I went to observation I was in his final period of the day. This class had around twenty-five to thirty students in this class. His final class is his AP English class. During this day their first assignment for the class was a writing assignment to help prepare them for the AP exams. Using this authentic activity will help the students prepare for this upcoming exam. While the students were writing their responses, John Dolphin explained to me that at first he had an outline which the students had to follow, but know they write their responses all on their own. Another strategy, is reviewing your notes. I find that it’s easy to forget what we have wrote down. Reviewing your notes allows maximum recall of the material you write down. Recording the general main idea and details can be more useful than verbal notes. Notes serve to record information for recall and should show the main points of the lecture in an organized manner so that the relationship between points and details are easy to tell apart.
Cross-curricular learning often refers to combining various discrete subject in the curriculum together. When applied to a primary school setting this creatively engages young minds in projects which encourage imagination and active learning. Barnes (2015) states that cross-curricular methods can be an effective way to teach ethical solutions, build individual and group motivation, sustain interest and raise standards. As well as exploring how cross-curricular approaches improve teaching and learning, this rationale will look at the idea of ethical enterprise and highlight concerns over cross curricular approaches leading to confusion and misconceptions within children.
This student’s preferred learning strategy compared to the learning strategy provided by V.A.R.K. is almost identical. The learning strategies that have been used throughout her education have always netted good results, which is evident by her grades. In the past other students have commented about her learning style and the amount of time spent on note taking, outlines, and writing out note cards, but she has perfected this process for her learning style.
Being organized plays a big role in note taking. I thought I was a good note taker until I read a few ways to take notes. At first, I would just write everything down and out of order. The encoding hypothesis says that writing helps to encode the information better. The external-storage hypothesis suggests that by writing down the information is helpful because you can review it later, therefore increasing retention. Even though, there has been a mix of results in these hypotheses it is certain to say that the use of these two hypotheses together can help improve the academic performance. Other research suggests that note taking can be generative (in our own words) and non-generative (word for word). Verbatim note taking tends to lower our cognitive process. The deeper the information is processed and encoded the better the comprehension and retention of the information and better it is for encoding. The research has shown that people who take verbatim notes show a lower academic performance than those who use non-verbatim notes.
Writing is a skill most people acquire when they are young and develop those skills as they grow older over time. As children, we learn how to read and write when in elementary school. Our school teachers teach us how to write; the size, the style, and the format. The books On Course by Skip Downing and 7 Habits by Stephen Covey, they are doing something similar. They explain to us about different ways to be effective, and how to better those skills. Both of these authors cover many different topics covering most areas of our lives. They do go into detail about how we think, and how that affects our daily lives. I believe that the most important habits and topics these two books cover would be “Think Win-Win,” “Seek First To Understand, Than To Be Understood,” and then finally “Discovering Your Preferred Ways To Learning.” All these chapters throughout these two books stick out in my opinion, thus why I think they are the ones I want to share. I firmly believe that everyone should learn these few tips because it will benefit them greatly.
Cornell notes were also created as a means of stimulating the critical thinking skills of students. Cornell notes also help students when they are working on assignments and they need help remembering and/or understanding what was stated in the classroom. Preparation was the main reason why Cornell notes were established; when students have an upcoming test and they need help studying they can easily pull out a Cornell note that was taken for that particular class that they are about to have a test on, Cornell notes work as an excellent study guide when none is provided by the teacher or lecturer. That is why Mr. Walter Pauk sought to invent and develop the idea of Cornell notes, because he saw that students were frustrated with their test scores as a result of not being provided with study guides. In my writing assignments, I found that I am good at organizing my thoughts and notes in an appropriate way, also going back and revising my mistakes along the way. In my future writing assignments, my goal is to make sure that I know how to start my writing properly and taking extra time to proofread the whole assignment.
Before I write anything in the discussion forums or an assignment, I generally complete all of my readings and notes. For my notes I use mostly the Cornell Method of note taking, and all of my notes for each week are contained within individual weekly documents files, explicitly dated and titled. Personally, I have a hard time just sitting and reading something. I am easily distracted. I prefer to look at picture, have a visual or something that I can touch, watch or listen to. It is very helpful to this type of person to have recipes – solutions to problems; previous exam papers for example (Fleming, 2011). When writing a paper for class I always pull up an old paper to go over format, the grade on that paper, and the teacher recommendations so I don’t make the same mistakes on the next paper.
During the multiple choice portion, we see that students who used the note-taking strategy did better than those who used the 3R strategy and the rereading strategy.
Active engagement occurs in the classroom when a teacher makes the connection between teaching and learning through pedagogy. The choice of pedagogy must see fit with the content of the lesson which in return will assist the teacher in constructing a more meaningful and supportive learning environment where students’ are more willing to participate and be actively engaged. The most important skill in pedagogies is relating the learning experience to real world situations in which students’ can relate too (Churchill et al., 2011).
As a read and write learner, I like taking notes in class and I read over these notes or copy them out. I take my time to study at my own pace and in a quiet environment, I love studying ahead of time to gather and collect all the information needed to understand and also learn a new task to achieve new skills I require. When I’m listening to a lecture for instance, I like to take notes, make bullet points for my reading, and I also turn illustrations into words and check the dictionary for word meanings for me to understand when I study.
