The common thread that I found between all of the leadership interviews was the concept of balance. It took on different meanings for the different interviews, but the overall concept was consistent throughout. Some of the leaders focused on balance in their own person lives, and others used it more in terms of having a balanced team that would work well together. I think both of these perspectives are important for a leader to become successful. I think balance is such an important concept in leadership because it is generally an important concept in life. For example, in order for a plant to continue to be grow, a gardener needs to add just the right about of water, sunlight, fertilizer, and care. If there is too much of one of these …show more content…
Many of the interviewees stressed the importance of this mutual respect, especially Ms. Walbert. In order to accomplish the necessary balance as a leader, you must develop a relationship with the followers, and that relationship must be based on respect. From personal experience, if I don’t feel respected by, for example my tennis teammates or the coaches, I am not motivated to get involved in team activities. It is important for me personally to feel the mutual respect because that is when I perform the best. This shows that all of these concepts, like balance and respect, are …show more content…
I will admit that something that sounds relatively simple, is very challenging. Just like the gardener with the plants, it takes time and experience in order to determine what the right amount of balance between all aspects of life is. While I have not had an opportunity to create a well-balanced team of individuals, I think the advice from the interviews was spot on. In order to achieve balance on a team, you need to get to know each other and have a mutual respect. Because situations are constantly changing, it is also important for a leader to be flexible in their leadership approach. I am in the process of finding a balance between school, work, and my personal
Leadership can be defined as the process of identifying a goal, motivating others, and make them to achieve the mutually goals (Giltinane, 2013). According to Humphreys (2002), successful leaders do this by applying their leadership knowledge and skills. A good leadership is not only good at management, but also use different leadership styles in different situations. A successful corporation must has a good leader who have the flexible ability which can provide a suitable leadership to make the company successful. Furthermore, there have no perfect leadership styles in the world. Different leader have different leadership styles which also have the different strengths and weaknesses (Ali & Waqar, 2013). This approach emphasize that having a leader with a certain set of traits is crucial to having effective leadership. It’s the leader and the leader’s personality that are central to the leadership process.
The text book also talks about that we need to recognize the important of interactions among leaders, followers, and the situation, in order to better understand the process of leadership. Indeed, interviewee underlines the importance of situation as well as the relationship between leaders and followers, in leadership, and said that leaders need to observe and analysis the situation as well as understand followers’ attitudes and
The interview was scheduled a month in advance and the interview questions were shared with the leader ahead of time (see Appendix). This allowed the leader to think about how she wanted to answer the questions. When the leader was asked to participate in the interview she was humbled by the request and enthusiastically agreed to take part. The interview questions were geared towards understanding leader’s leadership style and attributes as it relates to the leadership theories and the LEADS framework. The interview was conducted in leader’s office, lasted approximately 45 minutes and recorded with leader’s consent. The atmosphere during the interview was relaxed, the leader was open to answering the questions and the answers seemed
What does being a Leader mean ? A team leader is someone who provides guidance, instruction, direction, leadership to a group of other individuals for the purpose of achieving a key result. Sheila, your interview with the Pastor of Student Ministry clearly displays positive leadership in the church. Pastor Spencer was on point when he indicated that ministry is about serving others and honoring God. Effective leadership and followership consists of selflessness and putting God first in order to succeed. Consistent with Maxwell (2002, pg.131), in order to be a contributing member of a winning team, you must put the needs of others before your own. I can relate to being selfless. In my job, I am consistently putting the needs of others before my own. I would not have it any other way. It brings me joy and a sense of self satisfaction. When staff members ask me for things, I try to jump right on it and make sure they get exactly
Leadership is defined as the ability to accomplish a set goal(s) due to the act of inspiring and motivating a group of your peers. Former United States president Dwight D. Eisenhower made famous a quote that stated, “Leadership consists of nothing but taking responsibility for everything that goes wrong and giving your subordinates credit for everything that goes well.” (Notable-quotes.com). One of the most important aspects of the work area is leadership. Without leadership, there will be no guidance to for teamwork and the percentage of successful goal will be slim to none. Becoming a great leader is no easy feat however. An exceptional leader must lock in on specific attributes such as intellect, moral character, and human
Anyone can be a manager but to be a leader is what can differentiate someone from their peers. There were several take a ways from the interview with the regional VP that I had taken such as high performance, the importance of continued education, and how to best communicate with a team. These fell in line with important factors of motivation theories and qualities of leadership when it comes to decision making, and communication. Taking the time to understand different personalities can make an impact on how to best approach others. Good management to oneself and to society starts from the personal ethical choices that a person makes to make a conscious effort on how to represent oneself, communicate to others, and embrace diversity in all
The right blend and balance for any one particular organization will depend on the pace of change in the industry, the capabilities of the employees, and the resources available to take action. The need for leadership will always exist. There will always be a need for visionaries, people who can influence others, and people who can execute.
From Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela’s charisma, to Winston Churchill and Martin Luther King’s intelligence and Steve Jobs’ analytical nature, there can be as numerous ways to lead as there are leaders (Crossman, 2010). Leadership is a hot debate both in the business world and other areas of the society. Throughout the world's, there have been as many leadership models as there have been their commentators (Burns & Peltason, 1966). Fortunately, psychologists and businesspersons have established useful frameworks that refer to the main ways of leadership.
Team building is very important in the workplace as all of the staff members have equally important roles in the unit. Team building is defined as the process of deliberately creating and unifying a group into a functioning team (Huber, 2014). Without a solid relationship in a team the unit cannot function with maximum performance (Boies, 2015). Today we interviewed Queenie who is the manager of a local Asian-fusion restaurant in Torrance called Yellow Fever. It is not based on the deadly disease, but is an embracement and spread of the Asian culture. Yellow Fever is an Asian-fusion restaurant that serves Asian themed bowls based on the city they 're from such as the Shanghai, Tokyo, Seoul, and California. She has been working there since the opening of the restaurant in December 2013 and recently risen to a managerial position based on her increased experience with the restaurant and handling of customer relations.
Leadership is defined in Webster’s Dictionary as the “action of leading a group of people or an organization.” Leadership is also the ability to set trends, inspire, motivate, and sway others to produce desired results. There are different styles and ways of performing leadership and a good leader has the ability to take ordinary people, put them all together, and hopefully yield successful results. For organizations to have sustained results from their performance there must be a good balance of business insight, technical and interpersonal skills, and good team dynamics. A leader must know how to use all these areas as well as trust and communicate with their people in
My leadership outlook is collectively designed from my life experiences, ascertainments, achievements, and failures. I see leadership as an excursion simultaneously taken by leaders and followers to a mutual destination. Great leaders have clear core values, a course of action, an organized, suitable, and effective team, and unambiguous communication that will lead their team to this common goal. The best leaders have definitive vision and mission statements. They often refine these statements to ensure the requirements needed to successfully accomplish the vision and mission of every area of their lives including their family, their organization, and their unit is feasible.
There are different leadership styles; a particular leader that will be discussed is Alan Mulally a CEO of Ford Motor. Alan faced many challenges and he impacted
