For many, a superhero must have certain qualities. People want a superhero that is loyal, selfless, smart and strong. These characteristics are what many superheroes in comic books have; and in the early twentieth century, many teen boys were turning to for guidance. Batman was created for the kids who did not have it very easy. Batman saw both of his parents murdered and became a vigilante to fight off crime. Bruce Wayne changes into Batman for the better and portrays the better qualities of a hero as opposed to Dr. Jekyll in the book, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Dr. Jekyll changes himself from a good man to an evil man. Much like many other superheroes, Batman is the alter-ego of Bruce Wayne. Some heroes may not have an alter ego like mythological heroes. Heroes are able to have all different sorts of characteristics; it just depends on their story. In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde, Dorian Gray has used his portrait to be eternally young and learns to see evil as beautiful (150). Unlike Dorian, Batman is everything but selfish and risks everything for the better of man-kind. Batman will always be the superhero that kids can look up to and know is going to give everything he has to better this world. When it comes to super human powers, that is where Batman lacks. He has no powers to his human self that make him who he is. Batman is the alter-ego of Bruce Wayne who is a very intelligent businessman of Gotham City, this
Lastly, Bruce Wayne uses his massive wealth and intelligence to build gadgets, utilities, and tools all in an effort to stop villains—most of whom are not mortal. We have to realize that Batman is still a mortal man, and can be killed if due so. Therefore, not only does he have the intelligence to build whatever to defeat his foes, but he also has the cunningness to defeat them as well. This is evident in the Batman television series from 1966 to 1969, with Adam West. Moreover, many of these works that he creates has also caused him lots of pain and trouble that he self-situated himself in. One of the key examples is him battling Bane, where all his utilities has no use, and he was pummeled by him.
Though Batman tries to be portrayed as a hero, he is only a vigilante since he helps the law, but is not a part of it. This means that he fights crime, but is not a member of the police force or other civil duties that
To people that have comic book illiteracy, Batman and Superman would seem like they would be pretty similar to each other, which is true but only to a degree. They have similar names, outfits, and both live two different lives, etc. On the other hand, when it comes down to what makes these two men special, they are polar opposites. They have differences in backgrounds, powers, motivations, and in what makes them popular among fans. Despite their similarities in outward appearances, Batman and Superman are exceedingly distinct from one another.
Batman is a depiction of hope. Batman was the answer to a lot of people’s problems in a place where nobody felt safe like they should in their home. He was like the rain after a long, dry spell for
“It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.” Said by Bruce Wayne, explains how he feels about what he does as Batman. His actions as Batman prove him as an anti-hero. Christopher Nolan portrays Batman as an antihero through isolation of the character, and a dim setting of the movie.
Batman is an anti representative character with some good and bad traits, I will be discussing these points and specifically Batman’s eagerness to “fight crime” no matter what gets in the way, Batman and Bruce Wayne’s impulsive ways, Bruce Wayne and his money, the history of the Batman comic strip and then lastly Batman’s good side. Along with these points I will be explaining how Bruce became Batman.
There are many other reasons as to why Bruce Wayne is not just a superhero but rather a person who has a disorder. When he "switches" from Bruce Wayne to Batman, he does not even notice. It is almost as if it is automatic. Nobody realizes that the respectable businessman Bruce Wayne is Batman by night. It appears that he is Batman for many reasons but a major one is that he fears that something terrible will happen to other people just like it happened to him when he was younger. He tries to save others from getting hurt from outlaws and evildoers.
Statement of Importance: Batman is not a regular superhero, he has no natural powers, he is just an ordinary man who can inspire people to better themselves and help others.
Batman originally began as a DC Comics' detective a superhero quite different from the one envisioned by Nolan and company today. Batman was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger in 1939 for Detective Comics, and for more than two decades it depicted a hero defined by his mystery-solving techniques and cast of quirky characters against whom his braininess and eccentric costume could be balanced (along with his knack for solving crimes). Needless to
When James Gatz was young, he met Dan Cody who took him under his wing and led him on a strive to achieve great wealth. When Gatz sees his inheritance is not enough to achieve the idolized millionaire status, he continues to work hard by illegally selling alcohol in various “drug stores” under Wolfsheim (Fitzgerald 141).This self-redeeming trait is reflected in Wayne’s path in order to become the Gotham vigilante. Unlike Gatz, Wayne used the millions inherited from his parents to create Batman’s apparatus, butbut similar to Gatz, was not born as powerful as he wanted to be. Bruce Wayne was merely born as vigilante and was essentially a superhero outsider. Without being born with or developing the supernatural abilities of the traditional superhero, he begins to travel the Eastern Hemisphere learning strength and precision from his mentors Henri Ducard and Ra’s Al Ghul in order to confront the injustice in Gotham. (Batman Begins, 2005). In order to become greater, these characters became determined to rebuild themselves. They searched for guidance from their mentors in order to become the secret identities they yearned to be. Bruce Wayne uses his technology, brute strength, and passion to fight injustice and becomes one of the greatest crimefighter of Gotham City, similar to how the wealth earned by Gatz’s perseverance and diligence allowed him to become one of the most
Batman is one of the many fictional superheroes which appears in the “American comic books” that is published by the DC comics. The character is a secret identity for Bruce Wayne, the only heir to Wayne Enterprises. Bruce Wayne swore an oath of vengeance when he witnessed the death of his parents;Thomas Wayne and Martha Wayne (Diamond, 2015). Bat man combats criminals in Gotham: a fictional city, with assistance from various characters, for example, his butler Alfred and Gordon; Gotham city police commissioner. Unlike many of the superheroes characters, Batman possesses no powers .Bruce Wayne trained himself intellectually and physically .it is from dedication to training he possessed the useful traits of physical prowess, martial arts skills, detective skills and indomitable will to fight for justice. Though his motive is to combat crime and protect people of Gotham city from criminals, the justice system in most of the times views Batman as a villain and vigilante. He can inflict fear to Gotham city criminals thereby bringing calmness to the city. I identify myself with the Batman character through his selfless will for justice, his strong determination to do good
Another way in which Batman displays himself as a Byronic hero is his function as a subversive character which refuses to submit to demonic forces. He tries to appear to be a man who is morally upright. However, Batman is unable to separate himself from the pain of his parents ' untimely death, which gives him a new identity as a mysterious masked crime fighter. In most books and films, he tries to put this tragic incident behind him without much success. As Peter J. Tomasi indicates, “instead we see a presentation of Batman’s powers by exacting strange acts in the name of justice like teleporting hotheaded” (1).
Batman’s violent actions in Frank’s Miller comic book demonstrated the darkness of his heroic personality. After ten year retirement, Batman became more troubled to Gotham City turning to a crime-ridden and a fugitive. According to Joseph Campbell words “everything begins with a story”. The beginning of Batman’s story started after the death of his parents. They were shot by some criminals because they were going to steal and hurt them. Having to experienced this horrible scene on his childhood, traumatized Batman
This personality can help him to find the ways to complete whatever he thinks that it is important. For instance, Batman is catching the criminals continuously as this is what he wanted to do when he started to be Batman. Batman is a rule-oriented person. This can be good because Batman would not easy to be seduced by any person with any offer as he barely break his own rules. Hence, Batman is considered as a thoughtful person as he would think about any possible consequences before he takes any action. And yet, this may become his weakness. It is because he would be inflexible in his life whenever he is facing problems and situations. For example, a few people died because of Batman indirectly. It is because he could not fulfill the Joker’s request which he has to show his real face to the public. He suffered and almost surrender to the
Batman's a whole other story. The filmmakers have worked out the mask problems from the previous film; Bale fills the suit with grace and danger. His voice is disguised as well - it's now a bass-heavy synthesized whisper. The character seems more than ever an extension of his high-tech toys (like the neat-o Bat-scooter that pops out of the Batmobile at one point, ecstatically rearing up like the Lone Ranger's Silver). He represents a citizen's darkest urges, though, and it eats at him. He's Dirty Harry crossed with Hamlet.
