In spite of the fact that many people within the dental industry are aware of the multiple routes one may take in terms of becoming a registered dental hygienist, I believe that earning a Bachelors of Science (BS) degree will allow me to better serve my community. Being able to confidently apply a vast amount of knowledge concerning the occupation of dental hygiene in its entirety will essentially make me better equipped to serve future patients on a daily basis. I have found that many people within health professions strive to achieve excellence when reflecting on their aspirations.
When shadowing current dental hygienists I was able to grasp the flexibility that comes along with earning a BS degree. By attaining a Bachelors of Science, I
Being a dental hygienist was not the career I grew up believing I would pursue. At a young age, up to my Junior year in high school, I had my goals set on being a veterinarian. Going into high school I widened that plan into any job dealing with animal science. However, taking classes like zoology, botany, equine science, veterinary technology and advanced animal science, made me realize that I would not have as much direct contact or personal connections with the animals as I had hoped. However I found that being a dental hygienist gives me the opportunity to have that direct contact and personal connections with my patients.
According to the American Dental Association, "a dental education opens up a world of professional opportunities. In addition to private practice, today 's dental school graduates can choose to work in hospital emergency rooms, conduct laboratory research, teach future dentists or even travel the world with international health and relief organizations." (uccs).
Did you know that a dental hygienist could make a slightly large mistake without asking a simple question? Well they can, the most common question is if their patient would like one or more crown placed in there mouth at a time. In order to succeed as a dental hygienist everyone is required to go to either a two or four year college and major in dental hygiene. Many people believe that it is easy to be a dental hygienist because they think that all that is required to do is clean teeth, but its actually quite difficult. Making sure the patients have excellent oral care is very important
Dental Hygienist’s educational path can take place at community college, technical college, even universities. Before beginning dental hygiene school, I pictured dental hygienists as people who are just responsible for cleaning teeth, have flexible work hours, and overall dental hygiene being a good family-oriented career. While all of this accurate, I now have a more thorough and greater understanding of dental hygiene after entering this program. In these past two semesters, my view of a dental hygienist has definitely changed in a positive way. The dental hygienists role is not only to clean teeth, but also play an excessive role in educating patients, building relationships, and preventing and treating oral diseases. The mouth is a basic form of the rest of the body’s health, and dental hygienists have a duty to keep that in mind when evaluating
typically work in close proximity with patients, dentists, and other office staff. Being responsible and loyal to organization, family and relationships, I match perfectly in this career. Growing up as a child I always wanted to a Dentist but through the many paths that life offers, I have taken a few unplanned paths. After attending a four-year university on a softball scholarship and receiving degrees in Exercise Science which covered most of the requirements for dental schools, a Business degree with the plan of owning my own office one day, and a degree in Public Health to have a broad basis of needs and approaches for the general public. Following my bachelor’s degree, I set out and completed the remaining requirements for dental school as well as three lengthy internships within the dental field. During my time interning under a dental hygienist, a dentist, and a dental surgeon, I was able to confirm what I once thought
I have found that these science classes are useful in real in life, as I have job shadowed a hygienist. I wanted to be sure that cleaning teeth was the right profession for me. Watching the hygienist, I noticed the vocabulary she was using was exactly what I learned in my Anatomy class. Words such as anterior and posterior. After a few hours, I already felt comfortable with the flow of the dentist’s office. The hygienist took the x-rays, cleaned the teeth, put on the flouride, and page the dentist. She would use the patient as model and told me about the things I would learn when I go to college. I have get graded for washing my hands and flossing my classmates’ teeth. I was overwhelmed by the words and procedures. I did not know it was
Right now, I am attending Nova Southeastern University in order to achieve a Bachelor's degree in Biology. I chose to become a biology major because I believe biology is the topic that will better prepare me to get into dental school. In addition, I deciding to go to the College of Dental Medicine “Dentistry” for my early immersion activity. During this event I will learn about a career in dentistry, experience performing dental procedures, and learn about the NSU College of Dental Medicine curriculum. I am also volunteering at a dental office. I volunteer at a dental office to learn more about what it is like to be a dentist and to determine if dentistry is the right fit for me. Also, by volunteering at a dental office I get to experience what it’s like working at one. All dentist must have social and leadership skills. In order to acquire these skills I work on being knowledgeable, compassionate, and a good problem solver. I am also planning on taking leadership classes at
As our knowledge, technology and access to resources increases, our expectations for knowledgeable healthcare professionals and increased measures towards access to health care continue to increase. The issue being reflected is that the American Dental Hygiene Association (ADHA) recommends to change the dental hygiene educational standard for entry-level practice from an associate’s degree to a bachelor’s degree. The ADHA originally set its decision to raise the standard in well over 80 years ago and has since made small but mighty steps towards carving out the future for dental hygiene.

There are many multiples careers any person can pursue in this world, the careers range from Pre-medicine, Engineers, and even to Criminal Justice. Despite out of all of those careers, Dentistry has interested me in being able to interact with people, care for their needs to having a great smile, and a great lifestyle in the future.
Asking Dr. Moses what advice he would give to someone who is currently pursuing the career he has excelled in, he stated that “Dentistry is a profession that requires a lot of hard work, but if you give it your all, you’ll surely succeed. Knowing that to truly remain successful, one must care for others in a deep way” (Cranston). His words allowed me the opportunity to grasp unknown knowledge of having talked with an individual in my field, I interviewed Dr. Jerilyn Swann, the Associate Professor of Biology. Dr. Swann was a terrific help, in the sense that I was able to receive relevant advice. Asking her if declaring oneself a biology major would be of benefit, she simply stated that dental schools are looking for certain credentials from potential students and I believe you would receive beyond what is required of you, as a biology major (Swann). Through Dr. Swann’s guidance, I have begun the process of declaring a biology major and have made her my advisor. Her knowledge has opened my eyes greatly and has allowed me to see that my dreams are obtainable through hard work. By deciding to be a dentist there will be difficult times ahead and because of those trials, I may question my decision. No matter what may happen in the near future, I know I’ll be able to obtain what is needed to become an
