Taking the steps in becoming registered nurse take time and dedication. This profession is not for everyone; however once you get though the many barriers, you will feel a great sense of accomplishments. To be a great nurse you need to be able to communicate to your patients. Be empathic for individuals who are suffering; this trait can be hard to achieve, because you are not always able to understand what a person is going through. In other cases nurses find themselves becoming exhausted because of the constant emotional stress. Sometimes you have to take time away, to be able to get back to your equilibrium. Schrand explained that it was cheaper, and an easier route, especially since she was working a full-time job at the time. The next step was to transfer to a university that had a bachelor program. Once she graduated with her bachelor, she made the decision to pursue graduate level education. She now has a Master in Family Nurse Practitioner. Overall she has been practicing nursing for 26 years; as a nurse practitioner she has spent 16 years. One value that Mrs. Shrand strongly stress about is to keep her practice patient-centered. She believes that you have to have a relationship with your patient. It does not matter that age, gender, ethnicity. When a patient comes to you with a problem, your job is to always give them the best care. The role she plays in the health care delivery system is to always stay knowledgeable and current in her field. Practicing as nurse practitioner comes with a lot of responsibility. You are working with patients that vary in so many areas. She explains that you have to have the ability to know how and when to implement each method. The skill to be flexible is also important as well. The unit the nurse works in is the department of primary care. Her role is to work with veterans.
