A Guide to Becoming a Sidekick
Superheroes do not possess abilities that are portrayed in comics; rather they take the forms and shapes of police officers, firefighters, doctors and especially soldiers. The men, who go to war, reluctantly leaving behind their loved ones in order to fight for their country and the safety of those who live in the nation, are brave. They are fearful and yet despite that, they are willing to run forth into the chaos that has unfolded in our world. I pondered about becoming a military soldier and concluded that I cannot bring myself to harm others; I’m not strong enough to deal with the thoughts that are sure to follow once the deed has been done. I will instead become the hero’s sidekick aiding them though their battles. My personal future goals are to attend a good college that will provide me with the education needed to understand the profession I am after and help me to work efficiently. I’m hoping to attend Seton Hall University and major in nursing while hopefully minoring in psychology. Once there I plan to earn my bachelor’s in nursing and become a registered nurse. My goal is to enhance the abilities that I possess now and to gain other characteristics that will assist me in becoming an efficient leader. I have taken opportunities that have presented themselves to me and taken them, such as joining the Debate team at my school. There we are taught that your opinion must be made regarding a topic and once you have chosen a side you must stand by that decision and defend it using statistics, facts, examples, and other references. To understand the environment of the workplace of a nurse, I volunteered to work at Saint Joseph’s Regional hospital as a volunteer as a nurse’s assistant and joined clubs outside my comfort zone such as the debate
Observing and analyzing my leader opened my eyes to the amount of responsibility and knowledge one needs to be a great leader. These responsibilities that were witnessed during the shadowing project included aspects of role modeling, mentoring and educating fellow staff and colleagues alike. My leader possessed a well-rounded amount of experience, skills and knowledge about nursing and her management role. All of these aspects we observed and I feel my leader is not only strong nurse, manger and mentor; all these aspects contribute to making her a fine and valuable assets to our organization.
Firstly, in my Academic Career, I have held a multitude of leadership roles. My sophomore year , I was a class representative for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America, commonly known as FCCLA. It was my duty to alert members and keep them up to date regarding meetings and activities. As a representative of FCCLA, I learned how to work as a unit leader and a team member.That same school year, I ran for the district office of secretary for FCCLA. The nomination and election process, gave me the opportunity to grow and nurture my leadership abilities. It was eminently challenging; but I learned the importance of discipline and hard work. So far, I have altered how meetings are conducted from last year so that the student administration has more control of communicating ideas to the members. Later in the year, I plan to incorporate additional volunteer opportunities and I want to have more group conversations with the members to hear their ideas and try to merge those ideas into positive changes that can be made. This leadership opportunity is starkly different from that of coordinating a 5k. Being the president of NHS has given me additional exposure to public speaking skills, decision making skills, proper ways to conduct meetings, and ways to present myself professionally. Despite their differences, these leadership opportunities have helped me advance myself in my journey to accomplish my goals. The skills I gained and refined from these opportunities will undoubtedly assist me when trying to procure grants, build connections, and become a research team leader.

In 6th grade, I was chosen to participate in a leadership program at Richard Hull Middle School. At this program, I worked with girls who possessed similar leadership qualities, and I learned more about what it is to be a good leader. This leadership position taught me what makes a good leader. In today’s healthcare system, effective leadership is essential to improving and reaching organizational outcomes. A leader is someone with the ability to influence others but, an effective leader uses positive strategies to inspire employees to work towards the same goal. Leadership in nursing requires a constant effort to motivate others to become part of the organizational transformation. This can be achieved using a transformational leadership style with a focus on communication, motivation, and empowerment.
Throughout our nursing careers we have come into a situation where we needed to advocate for our patient or co-worker. It takes leadership skills, respect, and accountability to advocate in our workplace. Moreover, in order to create change one must first evaluate the issue then set goals to implement the plan. The purpose of this paper is to discuss my weaknesses and strengths to nursing, use of current leadership skills to advocate change in the workplace, and reflection on personal goal for leadership growth and development of implementation plan to reach goal.
From the Strength Finder website questionnaire, my individualized leadership strengths are as follows: achiever, command, context, focus, and significance. In this essay I will elaborate on these in detail and the ways they explicitly relate to my personality and the different experiences and activities of my life. I have also researched several articles that discuss transformational leadership and how this pertains to the literature on the subject. I will discuss transformational leadership in comparison to my own strengths, and explain how my leadership style may progress as I advance through this nurse practitioners program.
Good leadership is demonstrated through educating future nurses, leading within the workplace, and being part of a nursing groups and organizations. Nurses should be working together to improve the care for all patients.
I occupy my time in clubs and activities that both captivate my interest and are most important for my peers and me. Not all nurses go into the profession with leadership ideas. The nursing profession must produce leaders throughout the health care system. Leaders must function as workers, and administrators with leadership qualities, while still meeting their budgets and running effective units with high functioning and happy staff members. They need to trouble shoot necessary and work with the medical faculty while pleasing their staff and the administers.
The leadership development goal is to assist and direct personal efforts towards professional development in healthcare. To achieve this, this goal requires the use of mentorship programs and mentors to guide in increasing morale to work, achieving maximum career development, and realizing growth in the nursing profession by the end of the academic year. The goals overall aim entails developing competencies and skills that will increase the quality of care in my career.

Leadership does not always come with a title or prestige. Every nurse has within themselves qualities that make them a great leader. Leadership by definition, “is a combination of intrinsic personality traits, learned leadership skills, and characteristics of the situation (Cherry& Jacob (2013 p. 335). A leader is one who has the capacity and skills to direct or encourage others in efforts to achieve an outcome. I recently completed a self-assessment on my perceived leadership abilities. The survey was called the Nurse Manager Skills Inventory (Nurse Manager Leadership Partnership, 2008). It consists of four content areas of which I will address and identify my strengths and weaknesses.
The sum of education, experiences, and observations lays a foundation upon which I will grow to become a good leader. In this plan, I will focused on those aspects of leadership that I believe are most required for personal development as well as those which will be so significant for my future leadership career. I have identified three goals which will guide me in the development process. My goals are to develop my integrity, listening skills and communications skills. I assume that this plan will change and be altered as required by life circumstances.
