Believing in the Accuracy of Sensory Information

The Nature-Nurture theory is a big issue in psychology. In this theory, the nature portion of it says that we get all our knowledge from our genes. It’s the biological side to this theory but, there’s also an environmental side to this theory. The environmental side is the nurture portion to this theory. Nurture says that we get all of our knowledge through experiences. Also where, who, and how we grow up.

One of the oldest debates in the history of Psychology is about Nature versus Nurture. Today, we know that both play a significant role in human’s life. Some people believe that it is genes which affects our way of life and some people believes that it is none other but our environment that greatly influences our lifestyle and some believe that both has tremendous impact on one’s way of life. Indeed in certain cases both our nature (our genes) and our environment roughly play an equal role in human life.

The term sensation is used when referencing the process of sensing the environment through taste, touch, sound, smell, and sight (Goldstein, 2014). Moreover, it is the process that occurs once the sensory receptor experiences stimulation, which in turn produces nerve impulses that are sent to the brain to be processed in its raw form, then perception comes into play (Goldstein, 2014). Perception is used to describe the way people interpret these sensations and tries to make sense of everything around them on a daily basis. Perception is the occurrences of the brain

There are six senses in total and these are known as languages of the mind, or ‘modalities’. These are Sight, hearing, feeling, smell and taste, although the last two can be put into the ‘feeling’ category. We use all of our senses in a particular situation but all of us will have a favourite which we are more comfortable with and are likely to fall back on in times of crisis. (Chrysalis pg. 4)

Nurture refers to society, family, and church that impacts who we become. Some examples are how we are raised, where we are raised and our experiences during childhood. If a person is raised in a religious setting they will probably have those same morals and beliefs when they are older. If they were in foster system that will effect who they become depending on their experience in foster care.

One of the main, and most controversial topics discussed in a child’s development is, nature vs. nurture. Nature pertains to genetic influences that a child has inherited from their parents, such as traits, abilities, and capacities. For instance, what color eyes the child may have, how athletic they may be, and even their brain development. Whereas nurture, refers to the environment the child is raised in and how this shapes their behaviors. Such factors can include, the family’s socio-economic status, schooling, parental discipline, as well as whether the child is provided with enough resources. When it comes to nature or nurture having a stronger influence then the other, the answer is both, nature and nurture, influence the outcome of the child. This idea that both nature and nurture, play a part in how the child will develop, is known as the nature-nurture continuum.

Three reasons for believing in the accuracy or inaccuracy of sensory information is perception, interpretation, and knowledge. Perception is our sensory experience of the world around us and involves both the recognition of environmental stimuli and actions in response to these stimuli (Bagley, 2004). Through the perceptual process, we gain information about properties and elements of the environment that are critical to our survival. Perception not only creates our experience of the world around us, and it also allows us to act within our environment. In my everyday college life, there are several ways in which my perception differs from that of my peers. These differences relate to our own experiences within developmental stages of life, each experience serves a specific role on how we perceive things everyday. The concept of nature versus nurture is that human behaviour is influenced by genetic information inherited from our parents and also by environmental and social influences.

This refers to the influence of experience, i.e, what is learned through interacting with both the physical and social environment. Supporters of the nurture view are known as empiricists “holding the view that all knowledge is gained through experience", you may be familiar with the term empirical support; where data is collected through sensory experience rather than a reliance on thoughts and ideas.

Biology is the study of life and sensory takes a huge part of this. Sensory allows organisms to feel a sensation that delivers a message to the brain telling you if the situation is dangerous or not. Sight is controlled by the organ with transparent lenses that focus on light on the retina allowing organisms to see and visualize colors. The brain put the sight from both eyes into a three way delusional picture allowing organisms to see perception. Hearing is from the organ of the ear, the ear has a unique shape that pushes sound into the tympanic membrane. For a deep voice the ear can go through sixteen cycles per second and for high pitch voice up to twenty-eight thousand cycles per second. The mind is an amazing place. It’s incredibly adaptable and incredibly complex. The study of psychology aims to help us understand the the complexity of the brain. To help understand the behavior and mind and to assist in embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience. And while we aim to categorize and understand all aspects of the mind, it seems that we end up highlight complex, fascinating and uniquely different each individual’s mind works. One of the unique ways we’ve categorized the way our brain processes information is through senses. We’ll take a look at each sense in the coming paragraphs.
