In the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison, the protagonist Sethe is a mother who cares almost too much for her children. This trait seems to be her fatal flaw which develops into a conflict when Sethe’s once dead daughter Beloved reenters her life and begins to be draining force. Because of Sethe’s giving nature, Beloved takes advantage of her mother physically, interpersonally, and emotionally. Sethe relies heavily on her mothering instinct because she never had the mother daughter connection when young, she also feels guilty for her rash actions in killing the infant Beloved. This shows that Sethe cares more for her children than herself, she would risk death to give them what they wanted. Sethe would have been overpowered and her energy consumed by the ghostly daughter if it wasn’t for Denver continuously supporting the inhabitants of 124. Sethe’s relationship with Beloved formed and strengthened from the first day they were together, but her existing bonds with her younger daughter Denver and past acquaintance Paul D deteriorated as Beloved filled up their spaces in Sethe’s heart. Beloved acted as a different repellant for each of the characters. Sethe overly loved her children because they were one of the few things that were free in her life. Her love was also a conduit to pay off the guilt that she felt from killing Beloved and attempting to kill the rest of her young. She harbors the most guilt from Beloved’s death, so once she reappears Sethe directs most of herself to that daughter. The feelings of remorse make her dependent on Beloved, corrupting the previously strong woman essentially a slave waiting on all of Beloved’s whims. Sethe is unable to leave the relationship because of the guilt, but she cannot come clean of it until she comes to terms with herself, leaving her in an unending cycle of emotional deterioration until the women of the community drive Beloved, the source of her issues,
