Benefits of Silence and Harms of the Tongue In the Quran Almighty Allah Say: “(Zakariyya) Submitted: ‘My Lord, set a sign for me.’ He said: ‘Your sign is that despite good health you shall not be able to speak to the people for three nights (and days)” There is great benefit in remaining silent which is beyond ones comprehension. In this lecture we will talk less on the benefits of silence but more on the harms of the tongue. As it is said: “Things are known through their opposites” If we were to talk about the harms of the tongue only then will be able to truly appreciate the benefits of silence. The tongue is an organ which can lead a person to heaven or it can lead a person to the hell fire. If the tongue is engaged …show more content…
Suppose if a person utters a good sentence which becomes a source of pleasure for a fellow human being, and as a result reforms his character or assists him in refraining from committing evil. Such a sentence will be highly rewarded by Almighty Allah. At another instance Sufyan Ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "I said, 'Messenger of Allah, tell me something I can cling to.' He said, 'Say: "My Lord is Allah" and then remain steadfast.' I said, 'Messenger of Allah, what is the thing you fear most for me?' He took hold of his tongue and then said, 'This.'" Faith in Almighty Allah is the Message which all the Prophets (peace be upon them) were sent to convey to their respective nations and it is the basis of all good deed. In this Prophetic tradition we are informed to remain steadfast upon the belief of oneness of Almighty Allah and then comply with what our Lord has prescribed upon us. By adopting this path we will attain the pleasure of Almighty Allah. One of the major harms of excessive talking is that it results in hardening of the heart. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon Him) said: "Do not say much without mentioning Allah. A lot of talk without mentioning Allah Almighty makes people's hearts hard.
“Silence is violence” is a common phrase used by people nowadays which references people who lack initiative when it comes to speaking out against oppression. The same phrase could be applied to the ideas within Shusaku Endo’s novel, Silence. Endo was clever to name his novel Silence, because the word is a very prominent symbol within the story. In fact, it plays a crucial role to the development of the main character. Although some readers may argue that the role of silence in the book is neutral, I claim that silence plays a negative role for the characters because it is what causes protagonist Rodrigues to renounce his faith. In the story, it represents the silence of God, which induces Rodrigues to question his religion through the torture of innocent Japanese Christians.
Danticat uses her Uncles loss of voice, to show us how different and hard it can be to not have a voice at all. When Danticat was 9 years old, her uncle was diagnosed with throat cancer and the doctors told him that he would need a radical laryngectomy to save his life. Danticat recalls her uncle, a bishop, having a grand voice, a voice that would invoke people to listen when she states, “he would model Fignolé’s forceful and direct Creole diction and speak in a clear, powerful bass, allowing only a few well-chosen pauses” (Danticat p.31) However, as a bishop, her father recalls a time when he’d watched his brother give a
Throughout the article, there are numerous personal narratives of both positive and negative experiences the author has had from lipreading.
Anzaldua begins her fight in “how to tame a wild tongue” by sharing her experience with language. She goes on to shares times where she was discriminated for the language she spoke and how others would try to silence not just her voice but her culture. She goes into depth of this topic by using visionary writing along with her emotion capturing the audience’s feelings and attention. She uses metaphor of someone trying to take her culture away by stating, “We’re going to have to control your tongue,” the dentist says, pulling out all the metal from my mouth. Silver bits plop and tinkle into the basin. My mouth is a motherlode. The dentist is cleaning out my roots,”(206). The dentist being a person who is not a minority is trying to get her to confine in a culture that is not hers, by forcing her to speak a different language that would erase her roots.
“I am God ‘s slave and sultan of this world,. By the grace of God I am head of Muhammad’s community. God’s might and Muhammad’s miracles are my companions.” “I am Suleiman…and I conquered the land of Moldavia”
So many people in modern society have lost their voices. Laryngitis is not the cause of this sad situation-- they silence themselves, and have been doing so for decades. For many, not having a voice is acceptable socially and internally, because it frees them from the responsibility of having to maintain opinions. For Janie Crawford, it was not: she finds her voice among those lost within the pages of Zora Neale Hurston’s famed novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. This dynamic character’s natural intelligence, talent for speaking, and uncommon insights made her the perfect candidate to develop into the outspoken, individual woman she has wanted to be all along.
Euripides adopts the themes of speech and silence within Hippolytus in order to enable plot progression, to create dramatic effect and to develop his characterisation of key individuals such as Aphrodite, Phaedra, the Nurse, Theseus and Hippolytus himself. Through exploration of the themes in relation to the characters and chronologically it is clear that the sporadic pattern of speech and silence creates suspense and induces a far more intrinsic and natural response among the audience.
Reb Saunders understands the importance of silence. In fact, he was brought up in silence by his father. “My father never talked to me, except when we studied together. He taught me with silence.” (Potok 265).
Faith is a state of mind through which goals, desires, plans and purposes are interpreted into spiritual equivalent and transferred it to infinity intelligence. Everything can be achieved if you believe in yourself.
Crucial conversations are inevitable as we navigate life. I personally have had numerous crucial conversations some were harder to have then I could ever imagine. Which later led me to arguing in my head because I didn’t say the right thing or react the proper way. In our video we watched this week I loved how Joseph Grenny explained a myth we all follow about how telling the truth we will lose a friend or to keep a friend we suppress the truth. If this doesn’t hit the nail on the head I don’t know what will. I have often suppressed the truth or what I want to say in order to keep someone in my life at fear of the unknown reaction that would come back at me. I have also spoken up and wanted to put my foot in my mouth because that person didn’t
Our ability to hear, like no other sense, gives us the opportunity to engage. Being able to hear the muffled words of a teenager, the tender whisper of a grandchild, crickets on a summer night or birds chirping on your morning walk has an unmeasurable impact on our quality of life. That is why helping our patients to hear their personal best is critically important to the staff at Now Hear This®.
Remaining silent is an essential component of communication based on listening skill. This skill encourage people to participate, giving attention to listen to other people when they talking without interruption (Hybels & Weave 2008). More over, as people they make an ethical agreement to listen to the other, they focused their attention on them without acknowledging competing thoughts (Gamble & Gamble 2013). It is widely recognized that, listening can be defined as paying attention to other people when they talk. In addition, as human beings
When man calls upon God, putting his faith into God’s hands, man is involving himself in God’s eternal purpose. God’s eternal purpose was to bring many sons into his glory. The purpose for God calling many sons into his glory is so man will be prepared for the arrival God himself. God finds pleasure out of answering man’s prayer, it is man’s responsibility to seek God creating a relationship. When man prays to God and has faith within God, then he has entered God’s eternal purpose therefore man is saved. Man must approach God faithfully, if man doubts God, God will still be present in man’s life though man will not receive any of God’s grace. God believes in every man so man should have faith in God as
According to the sayings of Imam Ali in “Path of Eloquence”, a man who submits to the will of God had made a wise choice. Since this amazing creature called human being was created by God, he should use his senses in a good way that pleases his God. Imam Ali’s words say that a man should practice his life in such a manner that other people will love him during his life, remember him, and say good things about him after he dies. This supports the fact that Islamic spirituality and faith can be practiced outside of the religion and amongst people.
This definition is further expanded by Gloria Anzaldúa in “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”.
