Prior to his appointment as senator, Burr attempted without success to secure the election to the 103rd Congress in 1992. He was successful in 1995 and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing North Carolina’s 5th district for four successive congresses. Before his time in elected office Burr worked for 17 years as a sales manager for Carswell Distributing Company, a supplier of consumer and commercial grade lawn and garden equipment. Aaron Burr is a backstabber. When Hamilton, his best friend, started excelling faster than Burr was angry and didn’t understand why he was so much more liked. He was not only jealous of Hamilton’s position as treasurer, but jealous that Hamilton said everything he believed without people turning on him. This is why he started working with Thomas Jefferson, Jefferson and Hamilton disliked each other and always fought on opposing sides in cabinet battles. Burr, Jefferson, and Madison followed Hamiltons money to see where it went. They found that Hamilton was paying money to a Mr. James Reynolds to keep his affair quiet. The public got hold of this and Hamilton was put out of office. Burr also

The Committee chairpersons are the ones with the real power. There is an unwritten rule that the majority party member with the longest continuous service on a committee becomes chairperson when a vacancy occurs. The committee chairperson is the only one in the committee that actually has a real say in what is going on, and that opportunity is given to the one that has served his time the longest. However, that is no longer allowed. A historical event that has influenced Congress’s operations is the Legislation Reorganization act of 1970.This act ensures that there will be no more seniority because. Now a secret ballot elects them, however, the member with the most seniority usually wins anyway.
Aaron Burr was in great debt when he was forced into retirement from politics (U.S Senate). Burr had taken great adventures throughout his career and he had always given to a friend or family member in need, both of which would always carry him farther into debt (U.S Senate). “Burr had now entangled himself in a grandiose scheme to carve out a section of the Louisiana Purchase and/or Mexico and create a personal empire. Burr spent his time in the west raising a private army, seeking allies, and procuring supplies. Eventually, word of what he was doing made its way to Washington D.C. Thomas Jefferson exploded into rage and demanded that Burr be hung for treason. Burr always maintained that letters had been taken out of context, that enemies
He continued to sound out potential backers for his military expedition. In western Pennsylvania, hoping to enlist the support of influential Colonel Morgan and his two sons, Burr made the fatal mistake of expressing plans which his host found shocking. Morgan wrote a letter to President Jefferson summarizing his conversation with Burr, setting in motion the effort that would eventually put an end to Burr's dreams and lead to his arrest and trial. (Linder, 2001)

Over the course of the last eight years, the senate became hyper partisan due to unprecedented obstruction and filibuster. Republicans overused filibuster, resulting in the difficulty of Obama appointing any new persons. This is when Democrats brought the nuclear option before the senate. As this occurred, Senator Mitch McConnell stated, “I say to my friends on the other side of the aisle, you’ll regret this. And you may regret this a lot sooner than you think” (Berman). Inadvertently, Mitch McConnell foreshadowed the future political events. McConnell is a Republican, transparently showing his feelings about the decisions made by the—at the time—majority. Contradicting McConnell’s statement, Senator John McCain expresses that, “This is a body blow to the institution, and I think we’re on a slippery slope.” Recalling past confirmation wars, McCain cannot simply agree with the idea relying completely on majority votes because of the controversy; however, he did follow suit with voting likewise other Republican senates (Kane). Even with disagreements, the Republican party as a whole still manages to shut down the Democratic
Washington resented it, and punished Burr for the rest of his life” (Aaron Burr Association). The 1791 US Senate race brought up a growing enemy for Burr, Alexander Hamilton. When Aaron Burr won the Senate seat from Federalist Philip Schuyler, who happened to be Hamilton’s father-in-law, Hamilton began resenting Aaron Burr for taking the seat. Hamilton started hating Burr for selfish reasons. Burr attempted writing a book on the Revolutionary War, but Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of State denied him access of the library. In the presidential election of 1800, Burr tied with Thomas Jefferson who both received 73 electoral votes. Alexander Hamilton repeatedly tried convincing the House of Representatives to elect Jefferson over Burr, on account of Aaron Burr beating Hamilton’s father–in-law for a seat in the Senate (Senate). Hamilton’s scheme works and Burr is elected Vice President, and this is Aaron Burr’s stressor or breaking point. Thomas Jefferson once said, “I never, indeed thought him an honest, frank-dealing man, but considered him as a crooked gun, or other perverted machine, whose aim or stroke you could never be sure of”(Senate). When Burr was Jefferson’s Vice President he could tell that Aaron Burr’s mind was not all there, and Thomas Jefferson knew that Burr could go off at anytime yet no one knew when.
