Blackfish, a documentary filmed by director, Gabriela Cowperthwaite, centers around the neglect and mistreatment that large animals, like orcas, receive in captivity. The document’s purpose is to not only spread awareness about the treatment of orcas but to also cause a change in the situation they are forced to be in. Before I watched the documentary, I had no idea about how much these large creatures were being mistreated. However, after I was provided facts and retellings from people who had first hand experience with these animals, I learned just how terrible orcas were being mistreated in captivity. The main subject, Tilikum, was a 12,500 pound, male orca whale that was taken from the wild and put on display for most of his life until he died in 2017. The documentary enlightens Tilikum’s harsh treatment, which is believed to have caused him to have become aggressive and stretched. Tilikum was responsible for many injuries at SeaWorld, well he was held for most of his life, and even a few deaths. Dawn Brancheau, an experienced trainer at SeaWorld, was grabbed by the arm by Tilikum before he pulled her into the tank. Tilikum scalped Dawn and broke man of her bones before she drowned. After the incident, Tilikum was moved into an even smaller tank, increasing his stress and depression so much that he just swam lifelessly-an action never before seen by wild orcas.
