Bob Cilman and Judith Sharpe organized Young@Heart in 1982. The group 's hometown is located in Northampton Massachusetts. The mission of the Young@Heart Chorus is to present a unique and positive image of aging. Growing old does not have to be a bad thing and this film did a good job of showing that. There can even be positive outcomes as we age, but only if we attend to our physical health, cognitive abilities, engagement in social and productive activities, and have a subjective sense of life satisfaction. The elderly in this film definitely tried to do all these things even if they didn 't realize it. The film Young@Heart followed a group of aging people through a time or rehearsal before a big concert. They showed us the ups and downs of their experience in the chorus group. The film also focused on individuals like Fred Knittle, Joe Benoit, Bobby Salvini and Eileen Hall. The film focused on these individuals to show us some of the difficulties they went through in their everyday life. Life wasn 't always easy for them although they seems and acted healthy and happy. I think the film wanted to show us how important the group was to these individuals and how they could push through no matter what. This film wasn 't only about showing a positive image on older people it was also showing dedication. Over the course of the film they presented the successful aging paradigm. The successful aging paradigm is a theory that suggests that we will have more positive outcomes
The movie “Grumpy Old Men” starring Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau, portrays aging in its highs and lows through humor to soften the ageism put on the last stages of life. It exposes the disengagements, actions and social emotions of the second half of life from a development process.
Successful aging is a complicated and multifaceted concept that varies contextually among individuals, disciplines, and even time. Gerontologists have traditionally considered a person to have aged successfully upon having reached old age with their physical health, mental well-being and spirit still intact. Ultimately, successful aging is a matter of personal perspective, largely influenced by an individual 's values and experiences. Even those within America 's elderly population hold conflicting perspectives on what it means to have aged successfully. A qualitative study published by Reichstadt and Sengupta titled Older Adults ' Perspectives on Successful Aging, concluded that “older adults viewed successful aging as a balance between self-acceptance and self-contentedness on one hand and engagement with life and self-growth in later life on the other” (Reichstadt, "Older Adults ' Perspectives on Successful Aging: Qualitative Interviews", pp. 567-575.)
The alternative model to this is the ‘personal growth model’. This model provides the positive on ageing, or growing older; becoming wiser, seeing children grow up, grandchildren, great grandchildren, spare time for hobbies; sewing, kitting.
The main definition of “aging successful” is said to be, “successful gaining includes three main components: low probability of disease and disease-related disability, high cognitive and physical functional capacity, and active engagement with life” (Rowe & Kahn, 433). The first component of low probability of disease-related disability does not only refer to the physical disease itself being present in the persons body, but also the severity of the risk of the factors of such disease(s). High cognitive and physical functional capacity depicts what the individual can do and not just what they do. Finally active engagement with life deals with how the individual interacts with others (interpersonal relations) and creating societal value without any return (productive activity) (Rowe & Kahn, 433). We are going to look into the lives of Roger Gentilehomme and Earl Blassingame and analyze if they are considered to be “aging well” based on variety of articles as well as personal opinion.
The playwright was trying to get quite a few messages when he created this play. First of all, I believe he was trying to show social change and the power and potential that an individual has inside of them, despite their circumstances. I think that this play/movie reveals the true messiness of life and how with the right mindset, you can make it through anything you
Aging and being old was dominated by negative characteristics and conditions such as illness, depression, and isolation for a long time (Eibach, Mock, & Courtney, 2010). At first glance the terms “success” and “aging” seem to be in conflict to each other. When asking people about aging, their answers have many facets that are also found in psychological definitions: successful aging is seen as health, maturity and personal growth, self-acceptance, happiness, generativity, coping, and acceptance of age-related limitations. In the psychological sense successful aging is also often seen as the absence of age-associated characteristics (Strawbridge, Wallhagen, & Cohen, 2002). It seems that successful aging means is not aging.
The humanity of aging is a concept sometimes hard to grasp. Understanding why we are
They might have different results, in being dependent on caregivers for support, and society curbs various freedoms and when we are younger we have prestige, income employment and management positions. The results of the research is the study found that the elderly are living longer and by the year 2050 there will be more elders than youth. As previously indicated, one possible explanation for why older people may have come to be less valued than in the past is because they do not offer as much value in modernized societies because they have not kept up the changes because they are used to their old ways. The research that North and Fiske accomplished showed enough evidence that our elderly are” an inconvenienced youth” at this time but not forever. What kind of outcomes supported this conclusion?
It also depicts the power of freedom and leisure in order to help people feel young. The movie is an overall wonderful analogy for appreciating life. Old age and immortality are some of the main motifs of the movie. As people grow older, they face many different challenges regarding their emotions and physical self.
Another supporter of changing the way aging is conveyed is author, Margaret Cruiksbank, of the book, Learning to be Old. In her book she is a proponent of changing the way the aging process is described. Her position is that the underlying meaning of popular terms to describe aging weakens its value. She denotes that the term “successful aging” is a false phrase for the elderly as it “masks both the wish to continue mid-life indefinitely and the white, Middle-class, Western values of researchers, causing them to emphasize productivity, effectiveness and independence” (Cruiksbank, 2009, p. 2). She also concludes that the term “productive” aging symbolizes “economic usefulness and social conformity” (Cruiksbank, 2009, p. 2), especially for the female gender. More importantly, these terms can be used to measure. This ability to measure is subjective to the questioner and an individual’s self-worth. She suggests the term “aging comfortably” as it signifies easiness, and a “faint hint” of pleasurable self-indulgence which may not have been possible in younger years (Cruiksbank, 2009, p. 3).
Aging comes naturally and people should not be frighten be it. As it turns out the fear of this process is enough to speed it up. The negative attitude is a very powerful factor in this process and has a great effect on the physical aspect of aging. It is enough to put people into deep depression or lose their confidence with many other things like good posture. On the other hand maintaining a positive thinking can really slow the process down. In fact it can do miracles, regular exercises and healthy diet can bring new life. Often people feel threatened by aging and put a hold on their lives, while they should be constantly evolving as they go through life. With positive thinking, it is all possible. This paper will show that despite
My personal reactions after watching these videos were both amazement and encouragement. Aging can be a positive transition. Growing up, I have often heard it takes a village to raise a child, likewise, as shown in the videos presented, it takes a village to aid in the advancement of healthy aging. I found myself wanting to applaud what was seen as I viewed the 88-year old Mayor having her wits about her, engaged in her community, and having her physical functionality intact as she was still committed to playing hockey. I would not have imagined a 95-year old being able to play the keyboard eloquently with such vibrancy, or being an extraordinarily athletic at age 100. It was also encouraging to see aspects of society changing its view on this
After watching the “Surfing for Life” video, it is clear that how you perceive aging will affect how long you will live. When I will reach retirement age, positive aging will mean to enjoy the precious moments with my loved ones. Everyone wants a happy lifestyle, and to be able to take control of my life and make the most out of it when I reach retirement age is my ultimate goal. I want to feel good as I grow old, because keeping a positive attitude is very important in aging. I will learn to accept my flaws and natural beauty as I grow older with wrinkles. The video of “Older People Are Happier” talked about the importance of wisdom. Wisdom is a major factor to successful ageing and I hope to gain wisdom with years before I reach retirement
There are numerous ways to define successful aging. The word “aging” usually has a negative connotation. However, when putting the word success behind it introduces positive aspects that can essentially promote a long-term developmental outcome for an individual. Happening around midlife and late adulthood, successful aging is simply when an individual has complete development and maintenance of control throughout life, has achieved in the selection of goals and purposes, as well as maximization of gains and compensations of failure. This is the complete and ultimate goal for those in their late adulthood and is quite fascinating to developmental scientist. Those who engross themselves with attempting to achieve a successful aging will most likely have characteristics which in turn encourage and advocate for things such as health, growth, and vitality, maintaining social encounters and productive activities, and lastly maintaining high physical and cognitive functioning. Two developmental scientist, Vaillant & Mukamal, have discovered the factors that predict satisfaction of life are those an individual is able to control. These factors include are health habits, marital stability, years of education, and coping strategies. On the other hand those factors that are out of an individual 's control can not predict the level of happiness or satisfaction with life. These include the length of life of a family member, early health status, parental SES, and family warmth in
According to modernization theory, aging makes it harder for individuals to keep up with the changes that society brings. In order to replace the older
