On the 6th of August 1945 at 8:15:15 am, an American B-29 heavy bomber nicknamed the ‘Enola Gay’ flies over the city of Hiroshima. At 8:16:02 am, Enola Gay drops the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion instantly killed 80,000 people and many more after the radiation exposure. Few hours before, in the Tinian Island, Colonel Paul Tibbets gave the final update to the crew before the destruction of Hiroshima. Tibbets was the pilot of the Enola Gay and joining him was Robert Lewis, the co-pilot of the weapon plane with few more other crew members. At 2:45 am, the Enola Gay carrying the world’s first atomic bomb, nicknamed the ‘Little Boy’ takes off to the night sky. As the crew get closer to Hiroshima, the plane climbs to the altitude of 31,000 ft. and …show more content…
Five square miles of the city was cremated that surrounded the Aioi Bridge. Hiroshima was home to 280,000-290,000 people and the blast killed 80,000 people instantly or seriously wounded them. The radiation exposure also killed thousands of people later. It has been estimated that 237,000 people were killed from the bomb’s effects which were burns, radiation sickness and cancer. Buildings were wiped out and out of 90,000 buildings, 62,000 were destroyed. The ground temperatures reached 4,000℃ and radioactive rain poured down. Around 90% of doctors and nurses were killed or injured and 42 of the 45 hospitals were non-functional which meant people died without any care to ease their sufferings. The ones who survived developed cancers such as thyroid, breast and lung cancers. Women that were pregnant while they were exposed to radiation had higher rates of miscarriage and deaths to their infants and children who were in the womb would most likely to have intellectual disabilities, impaired growth and risk of developing
On the 6th of August 1945 an American B-29 Bomber plane launched a dangerous atomic bomb called “Little Boy”, in the centre of the city of Hiroshima. The Bombs left 140,000 people dead and another ten thousand died later from the toxic radiation exposure.
“The city was hidden by that awful cloud . . . boiling up, mushrooming, terrible and incredibly tall," said Colonel Paul Tibbets, pilot of the modified B-29 bomber that dropped the world’s first atomic bomb over Hiroshima. The bombings resulted in the death of thousands, including not only Japanese citizens, forces, and military but also American captive soldiers. In the midst of World War II the United States forced Japan to surrender by dropping bombs in the major cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They released the second atomic bomb shortly after, in Nagasaki, Japan.
With the new working bomb, during World War II American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first atomic bomb called the little boy weighing 9,000 pounds on Hiroshima, Japan instantly killing eighty-thousand people then killing over tens of thousands of people after due to radiation exposure. Three days later another bomb
With Its commission to the fleet, Enola Gay preformed a test mission in preparation for its mission the next morning. The mission would be called “Operation Centerboard 1”, this type of bombing mission had never been preformed, the bomb had never existed or had a full functional test, and the hopes of ending the war hung in the balance of this mission (Museum, 2011). The Enola Gay and its weather plane escort took off from North Field airbase, Tinian Island at 0245Z 06 August 1945, Operation Centerboard 1 was on a course for history (Museum, 2011). The Enola Gay climbed to 30,000 feet in preparation for the bombing raid. The bomb was dropped at 0915Z over Hiroshima, Japan. The bomb hit the intended target 43 seconds later (Museum, 2011). The airplane preformed the escape maneuvers and started the return to base. The detonation mushroom cloud climbed to 40,000 feet and was visible by the crew for 360 miles away from the impact sight(Museum, 2011). The crew safely landed at Tinian island 1438Z performing the mission exactly as planned (Museum, 2011).
The first true testing of the Atomic Bomb began on August 6, 1945 in Hiroshima, Japan. The Atomic Bomb was dropped by the Enola Gay which a was plane that was piloted by Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, Jr. The bomb was released from approximately 31,600 feet above Hiroshima. When the bomb made contact with the ground it immediately blew up, destroying about
Numerous survivors suffered from leukemia, which was the deadliest symptom of the attack. Children were mostly affected by the leukemia. The survivors of the atomic bombing on Japan were said to have a higher risk of getting this cancer than others because of the amount of radiation given off from the denotation of the bomb. Women who were pregnant at the time of the attack experienced a multitude of problems. The pregnant women either had a miscarriage or it would die as an infant. The babies who survived birth usually had some type of learning disability, and they had a great chance of developing cancer later in their
“At 8:15 on the morning of August 6, 1945.The U.S was in japanese air ready to drop the first atomic bomb.About an hour previously, the Japanese early warning radar net had detected the approach of some American aircraft headed for the southern part of Japan.”The alert was given and the broadcasting was finished in all the cities including Hiroshima.
On the 6th August 1945 the Enola Gay, a USA warplane, dropped an atomic bomb (called the “Little Boy”) on a Japanese city called Hiroshima. This was the first time the atomic bomb was used in war. The bomb exploded at around 580 m above the ground with the equivalent power of 15 kilotons of TNT. Sixty six thousand people died instantly from the heat and impact of the bomb. Three days later, on the 9th August, the US decided to drop a second and bigger atomic bomb (called the “Fat Man”), on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. The “Fat Man” had an equivalent power of 20 kilotons of TNT, causing more than fourthly thousand deaths. The dropping of the bombs, which was on the order of the US President Harry Truman, remains the only nuclear attack
With the war in Europe ending shortly after Adolf Hitler committing suicide in his office, America is under pressure to end the war in Asia but Japan is still putting up fierce resistance. On August 6, around 8:00 AM, an American B-29 flew over Hiroshima, Japan carrying the world’s most feared weapons, a weapon which can flatten a whole city in seconds, Equivalent to 13 kilotons of TNT. This new technology is called an atomic bomb. The primary target of “Little Boy” (the atomic bomb) was Hiroshima, Japan. Hiroshima was of industrial and military significance. A number of military camps were located nearby, including the headquarters of the Fifth Division and Field Marshal Shunroku Hata's 2nd General Army Headquarters, which commanded the
On the morning of August 6, 1945, a B-29 Bomber that was names Enola Gay had flew over the City of Hiroshima Japan and dropped the first atomic bomb to have ever been made. The motive for the creation and research of the bomb was a direct result of the Japanese bombing on Pearl Harbor. When the bomb was finalized after all the research of splitting atoms and combining plutonium and uranium and knowing what to use, many tests were done and the bomb was presumed ready. But no one could have guessed the magnitude of this bomb. The city was engulfed in flames as the power of the bomb being equivalent to 20,000 tons of TNT being dropped exploded. There was much work that went into making this project a success amongst all others. There was a wide variety of scientific brain knowledge, civilian knowledge and much military knowledge and assembly to make this project happen.
On August 9, 1945, the B-29 bomber wedged through the clouds in a Japanese city of Nagasaki that unleashed a 22-kiloton plutonium bomb known as “Fat Man” (Andrews). The man who survived could never forget this event. This happened because at this time; it was World War ll. Three days earlier, Tsutomu Yamaguchi who was severely injured in the atomic attack at Hiroshima (Andrews).
Then in 1943, the allies started gaining momentum against the japanese. Even though Japan was nearing defeat at the end of 1994, the Japanese had proved that they would do anything to win the war, including suicide tactics. Furthermore, America was planning on an invasian that would be even bloodier than that of D-Day and would possibly extend the war by two more years and kill even up to a million more lives on both sides. The US decided that building an atomic bomb was probably better than risking the deaths of more Americans and Japanese. Once the bomb was finished, they made plans to drop the bomb, which they code-named, Little Boy, on a city called Hiroshima. Hiroshima, had a population of 350,000 people, and was a location of a military base at the time of 1945. This made it a good location to target in hopes of achieving the goal to drive Japan out of the war. They used a plane called the Enola Gay, to drop the bomb they created, which they Code Named, Little Boy. By this point, Germany had already surrendered, which made Japan one of the last and primary targets for world war
On the 6th November 1945, a United States bomber flies over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The only cargo aboard that B-29 bomber was an atomic bomb waiting on its target. At 8.15am the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, taking 140,000 lives with it. Most of the 140,000 died instantly, horrifyingly the rest of the innocent civilians that were not in direct contact with the bomb died painful deaths in the four months following. They died from radiation sickness and different types of cancers.
On August 6, 1945, during World War II an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, a second B-29 dropped another A-bomb on Nagasaki, killing an estimated 40,000 people. Japan’s Emperor
On August 6, 1945, a B-29 bomber named Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb, "little boy" on Hiroshima, Japan. Hiroshima had been almost eradicated with an estimated 70-80,000 people killed. Three days later, a second, more powerful bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki, killing over 100,000 people. Since Japan was economically and militarily devastated by the late summer of 1945, the use of the atomic bombs on an already overcome Japan was unnecessary and unwarranted in bringing about a conclusion to the war in the Pacific.
