Every year more and more books by talented and famous authors are being banned. “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl”, Of Mice and Men”, The Scarlet Letter” (courtesy of The American Library Association. “Banned Books Week”, and Jamie Frater. “Top 15 Banned Literary Classics Listverse.com) recognize any of these famous titles? Would you believe these classic books have been Taken out of schools and libraries to keep people from reading them? Books should not be banned from schools and libraries. By banning books, we are shielding children from the real world and eliminating critical life lessons that children should learn. We cannot raise children to believe that the world is always a kind safe place
I absolutely disagree with banning books. Banning books is not good policy for any educational setting but especally in schools. Books help the students better understand the cultural changes and the different point of view in their beliefs.
Book banning is something that was been around for almost as long as books have, but why? Book banning started because certain books made different people or different groups of people feeling challenged, uncomforted, offended, etc. In other words, these books were engaging to the reader, pushed them to their limits, and really made them think about what they were reading. This is exactly what readers should want out of a book. Instead of embracing the books, many decide to get rid of it and do not want to be challenged or forced to step outside of their little, comfortable box they have for themselves. This issue of book banning is something that has gone on long enough and needs to end right now. Books are something that should be cherished and protected, not banned. Books are a very important part of today’s society and should not ever be banned.
Books are a gateway to a world of imagination, but some schools are trying to shut those gates off by banning them. Books are some of the best teachers left, it's not up to a school to decide what a child should or should not read. Banning books can deprive a child of the opportunity to think. Books should not be banned because of the lessons they can teach, the fact that a school should not even be able to ban them, and it can deprive a child of the opportunity to think.
In conclusion, I think that schools should not ban books because the books have history and if you erase the books you are erasing history. I wish that people would understand that these books mean something different that it isn’t really meaning the words in there which are bad now but before they always meant something
School boards, principals, and teachers have a responsibility for protecting the minds of their students by covering grade and age appropriate material in the classroom. However, does this given responsibility cover the act of banning books from their classrooms? As an advocate for each student, does the teacher not have a duty to introduce the students to a these words issues in order to help the student cope with the different problems in the world? How does a school decide which books should be banned and how much say does the teacher have what should be left up to the teacher? Some say that banning books from the classroom, we prevent them from learning about different controversial topics in a safe and secure environment. In this paper I reflect on my research question: Why do schools ban books in the classroom?
In conclusion, books can affect children in both positive and negative ways and banning them can determine whether those affects go into play or not. Children can get confused on how they view things in life. This is why books should be given to kids are old enough to understand the content clearly. Although the opposing side would say that anyone should be able to read what they want, some content can damage the minds of those who don’t
At the present time, at least seventy-five books are being banned. This is hurting our culture more than it is helping. This has to be stopped; books cannot be taken off of the shelves at the rate that they are today. The books that are being taken off of the shelves are, for the most part, considered classics. The act of book banning puts limitations on what authors can say, and what readers can read (Dorshemer p.1). The banning of books in America is a violation of our first amendment rights. Amendment 1 of the United States Constitution states as follows:
Assertion: I don’t agree with book banning, and don’t believe it should have ever been a thing. Parents and other guardians do have a say in what their child can read, but should not block it off from everyone else who would want to enjoy it.
School libraries should not be able to ban books because people should be able to choose what books they read and should have access to them, banning books will draw readers, and because some books can teach students about what might happen in their future. Schools should not be able to ban books because people should be able to choose what they read. In the article Ban a book, draw readers by Colete Bancroft she states “ Every parent should be able to guide their child’s reading.” Also 1 parent should not be able to decide for a whole school of parents on what their kids read.
Students need to learn the history behind the books they might read in the future. If some of these books get banned from public schools the students will not have the opportunity to learn the history behind the books, because of one little inappropriate thing in a certain part of the book. Book bannings is censorship. It prevents the spread of ideas among the student populace. And while one can understand keeping more mature books away from middle schoolers and younger, since they have years before they have to be an adult, there is no valid argument for banning books for high schoolers. They have between 0 and 4 years until they have to start being an adult, outside of school, and if we keep new and more mature ideas away from them, that keeps them from being the best adult they can be. New concepts in books may be scary, but we still can’t keep them from it, they have their right to read what they wish. Even if alternate solutions have to be used on certain students, humanity is not going to become savage, and immature from
Book Banning in Schools Books are banned in school libraries every year. They are pointed out for having inappropriate content, which some believe should not be allowed to be read by students. Unlike in the past, people are allowed to argue against the banning of books as well as fight for it. There are many arguments for the banning of books, such as: it protects family values, parents must protect children from the offensive material that can be found in them, and there are legal standards for the removal of books. On the other hand, there are some that believe that students need bold books to further grow and mature.
The community should do what they want to do. They shouldn’t be told to ban books from their school district. They should be able to read what they want to read especially in schools. I don’t think any books at our school are banned from our school library because Illinois I don’t think has any banned books.
Books have many life lessons that are useful, themes that are valuable, and morals that should be kept. First off, “Libraries, to me, are safe spaces, and if young readers can’t explore the themes in my book there, where can they?” (Strum, “Banning Books¨ ). Libraries are supposed to be a place
