Boxing was originally a prehistoric martial art and combat sport, and has re-emerged in the past couple centuries. Depicted in art as early as the 3rd millennium BC, and popular spectator sport in Ancient Rome, participants fight solely with their fists in hand to hand combat, often with padded gloves. The first recorded rules of boxing, titled Broughton's rules, were written by boxing champion Jack Broughton in 1743 to protect fighters’ lives in the ring. Boxing is a sport that focuses on a disciplined aggression. The fights do not spring from emotions, or need for self defense, but rather from competition, it is about creating opportunities and taking advantage of those situations as they unfold.
